Maryland to upstate New York including Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Binghamton, NY is being evacuated. Good grief. Has anyone seen a unicorn?
Everybody safe, if not dry?
My roof has a minor leak controlled with a roll of paper towels. Not nearly as difficult.
Wonder how Vermont is faring in the recent downpours.

Just keep repeating to yourself:

Global warming/climate change is communist tree-hugger propaganda.... Global warming/climate change is communist tree-hugger propaganda.... Global warming/climate change is communist tree-hugger propaganda....

And vote Republican.

MAN MADE global warming/climate change is communist tree-hugger propaganda. Non man made etc. may be real, but you have to ask: warmer then when?

You can't blame every weather event on it anyway.

Interesting points on the radio yesterday (NPR's Marketplace, I think) about the problem of people putting themselves in the way of natural disasters; building in flood plains or low beach areas or on known fault lines. We help create these disasters by building in foolish ways or places.

My next-door neighbour Noah woke me up this morning. He was pounding nails and driving screws into a small construction project he's working on. Sounds strange to me so I won't go into it here. But one thing he said during our conversation confuses me. Does anyone know what a cubit is?

Check with Bill Cosby (ca. 1963)

I agree with this, SRS. But 10 of millions of people throughout the world have no choice as to where they live as a result of over-population. At one time the human population of the planet was relatively low and, hence, only a handful of people were affected by each natural disaster. Now the population of the planet (plus associated infrastructure) is HUGE and ten of thousands of people are bound to be adversely affected every time the 'forces of nature unleash their fury'. Surely, its one of the most obvious of the many 'downsides' of uncontrolled population growth?

Cities like Binghamton, New York, Pittsburgh, etc grew due to access to water. No water/no industry.
And global warming has happened before, long before man burned fossil fuels. So I have to agree with Guest's revision.

Vermont seems to be recovering. The latest rain has been slower, so the rivers are handling it. Some of the worst damage came when a river cut a new channel. When geology happns you really can't fight it. From the look of the weather maps, northern NY will have damage from this storm.

And as Andrew Revkin points out in the NY Times, so many homes have burned in the Texas drought because so many more homes have been built out in the pines in the past 30 years.

It does look like this round of wet is spread further west, but overlapping where Irene hit in NJ and NY, for a nasty double dipping. :-(

Here's a photo taken today of a nearby town (20 miles away)

Flooding in Towanda PA

Be safe out there.

How are you doing, Michelle?

All of you up there -> remember, don't drive into any water that crosses a road. That's what kills more people down here in heavy weather (i.e. flash floods, when we get rain, that is) than anything else.
