Subject: Jean-Michel Veillon From: Alice Date: 27 Sep 99 - 10:10 PM For two weeks in a row, we had the privilege of having Jean-Michel Veillon participate in our local session while he was here on vacation. It was a great experience to hear him and to play with him. After hours of Celtic tunes, he then began to play music from the Balkans. Here is a link to his bio and discography. Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: GeorgeH Date: 28 Sep 99 - 11:47 AM So I hope you've purchased his CDs . . Jean-Michel toured the UK as part of the Flutopia project last year, and we had the delight of accomodating him; he really is a lovely guy. And do note that for his latest CD he is accompanied by (amongst others) John-Jo Kelly (bodhran player extra-ordinaire) and Ed Boyd (Guitar) of Flook! - who I may have raved about once or twice in these parts. G. |

Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: GeorgeH Date: 28 Sep 99 - 01:24 PM OK, the first of the CDs I was trying to recommend is: J.M. Veillon & Y. Riou: "Pont Gwenn ha Pont Stang" which is simply wonderful . . . The other one (with the Flook! members) isn't listed on the English web page, but from the French site can be found to be "Er Pasker" Coop Breizh : CD888. I've not bought that one yet . . And while on the subject - to extend your collection of wonderful flute playing don't forget Flook!'s "Flatfish" CD - then you'll find why I keep raving about them. G. |

Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: Alice Date: 28 Sep 99 - 01:33 PM George, Jean-Michel is a great guy, as you say, and he gave me a sample of his latest CD, "Er Pasker". He will be touring the US again and will be in Laramie, Wyoming, so heads-up, WW and kat. I will let you know the date when I have that info. |

Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: GeorgeH Date: 29 Sep 99 - 07:29 AM Alice, we seem to be having a private conversation here. I guess the rest of MudCat don't know what they're missing! G. |

Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: Alice Date: 29 Sep 99 - 10:58 AM George, it seems so. I was looking for a site with recent sound files to link here so people could hear what they are missing. Well, this is what I came up with, but it is with Kornog in the mid-eighties, not his recent recordings - still excellent. sound files to hear Kornog Performers: Christian Lemaitre: Fiddle, Guitar, Jamie McMenemy: Bouzouki, Mandolin, Vocals, Soïg Siberil: Guitar, Jean-Michel Veillon: Bombardes, Flute, Whistle A.F. in Montana |
|
Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: Alice Date: 29 Sep 99 - 11:07 AM Well, I thought I had linked directly to the Kornog CD's I found at CD Now, but the above link takes you to their search page. Just type in "Kornog" for artist and you will get two CD's of the group and some various artist CD's. There are sound files that are linked to each CD when you 'click' on the album. |
|
Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: Alice Date: 29 Sep 99 - 12:32 PM I hope this works - a direct link to a tune from the 1984 CD, "Kornog, Premiere Music From Brittany" tune Dans Loudieg |
|
Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: Alice Date: 29 Sep 99 - 12:35 PM Darn it, CD now re-directed that link to their pop page. Well, for anyone who would like to hear him, go to the Kornog link, and listen to the RealAudio of the tune "Dans Loudieg". |

Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: Alice Date: 03 Apr 01 - 06:43 PM This old thread may not get any more attention than it did back in '99 (if anyone reads, this please post and let me know that you did!). A friend emailed an mp3 guitar recording that I really liked, so I decided to gather some more mp3's and make another station. In my searching, I discovered that Kornog is on mp3.com. I also found a song by Terry Tufts that really knocked me out, "Marylou in Burgundy". I am not a promoter on mp3.com (I just have my own page) but I do like creating collections of tracks, so this is one that includes Kornog, for anyone who would like to listen to Jean-Michel Veillon, as well as other music I gathered. For anyone concerned about giving out their email to listen to it, just make up an email address, as suggested in another thread. You can also save the lo-fi link to your computer and then open it to listen, if you can't get "streaming" to work. Alice - waiting to see if I have killed this thread, or if anyone will bother to read it. |

Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: GUEST,Astorsen Date: 04 Apr 01 - 03:59 AM I happen to have met the Kornog bunch when they were not Kornog yet, too many years ago. I regret that this group somehow disappeared as they were adding salt to an otherwise too repetitive music: the Breton... Which tends to prove that there is a life beyond the andros. Cheers JL |

Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 04 Apr 01 - 06:31 AM I noticed the name, I saw him on the Flutopia tour too Be prepared to hurl stones at me.............coz I didn't get it ! Perhaps he was having an off day, everyone raves about this mans playing yet that night I missed something ?? perhaps I should buy a CD, which one do you suggest? On the Flutopia tour there were also two more men I have heard nothing more of, one played a three hole flute and a drum at the same time! the other I think was the man who is imortalised in the tune 'The gentle giant' on Flook's flatfish CD Roger |

Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: GeorgeH Date: 04 Apr 01 - 12:11 PM Jean Michelle must have been having an off day when you saw him . . he was stunning at Sawston. As for his records, I reckon the one I recommended above is better than two of his later releases. The second you mention is Quique who continues to play in La Musgana back in Spain (lives near Madrid . .) He also turns up as a session player on various Spanish CDs (there's also a "special thanks" to him on Suzanne Sevana's wonderful CD - pity I've spelt her surname wrong!) Can't help with "the gentle giant", though! George |

Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: GUEST,Arne Langsetmo Date: 04 Apr 01 - 01:03 PM Kornog started touring again for the first time in a decade or so; I saw them in Mad-town late last year. They have two new CDs out too. Keep an eye out for them; I personally am glad to see them back in action; I had missed seeing them live a decade ack, and knew them then only by their CDs ("Premiere" is a favourite, as is "Ar seizh avel" ["On seven winds"]). The two new ones are also quite good, and cover slightly different territory. Cheers, -- Arne Langsetmo |

Subject: RE: Jean-Michel Veillon From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 04 Apr 01 - 02:46 PM I remembered the mystery Giants unusual eight hole flutes which led me here and then using Kaval and Flook in a google search I came up with Andras Monori near the bottom of this interview Trouble is I now want a Zurla and a Kaval, and a Tin Tin Quartet CD (when I track one down) Roger |
