I can't figure out where he ever came from. The nearest pond is about a quarter mile up in the vineyard ... He leaped when he saw the crow but the thing got him mid air ...

I go luck with wildlife anymore, first my raccoon now my frog

There's a clip on 'Funniest Videos' where children are getting to know a white rat(?) when something takes it.
It happens so suddenly that I couldn't see if the rodent WAS a rat, and the predator was so fast it had to be a falcon. A blur is all you see.

A kingfisher (bird) took all 'my' little skinks last year. I'm building them a rockery this year.
(The (bird) because I think there's a mustelidae called a kingfisher.)

I have a neighbor who has an ornamental fishpond in his backyard--landscapers call it a "water feature" nowadays. Well, a great blue heron came and ate all his goldfish!

Just be thankful you didn't pay good money for the frog. (You didn't, did you?)

Naw Jim,
He was a gift from nature. Just showed up one day and decided this was his fountain. All summer he ate bugs ... till the crow ate him

Dan... yer pond got a natural mud bottom? Didn't think so on accounta you said it was plastic. So, the crow did yer frog a favour on accounta frogs don't freeze too well near as I understand. Hoppin back to the nearest spot to winter mighta been pretty rough fer Kermit come cold weather. Better to get it over with quick like.

I mean, look at the bright side eh?

Sorry to hear about the untimely loss of your frog, Dan.

This may cheer you up a bit:

Frog makes formal complaint.

It could've been worse. A bear or a coyote could've taken one of your Dachshunds! (this has been known to happen)

Very true LH and Gnu you are so right, but I was gonna catch him and throw him in the big pound before the freeze .. Oh well ... crows gotta live to.

A few years ago one of the coyotes was in the back yard by the fence. I always let the wiener dogs out with Gus my 130 lb lab newfie like critter. His fur was up and showing his teeth .. He get really protective about the wiener dogs ... good thing, they would make a tasty treat to a coyote ...even with the fence they may find a way to eat one of them

If something...anything...goes after a wiener dog of mine, the gloves are off. An ax, a gun, a knife, a baseball bat, a crowbar, my bare hands...whatever it takes. I like to think the old wiener would do the same for me, given the need.

Amen LH ... they are angels. I got three of em.
My gus the big fat 130lb dog watches them so close. People can pet him pull his ears but try to touch a wiener dog ... his fur goes up .. At the place where I board them when I travel, the lady said they are so much fun but if another dog growls at the little ones his fur goes up and teeth go out ..

Well he was raised with them. He is one of the pups my daughter and I bottle fed at 1 day old. All he knows is the wieners

Bummer, Dan......earlier this year I went to use the toilet in our bedroom ensuite bathroom, lifted the lid and went to sit down.....(too much information I know, but bear with me).....when something made me look into the bowl and there was a big green tree frog, half in and half out of water, grinning up at me. I shut the lid very quickly and called for Himself who scooped out the frog and took it outside to join its friends. We have frogs here in summer, they have a favourite spot in the garden.

Just imagine if you were sitting peacefully, minding your own business, doing what you need to do, and a cold clammy little froggy hand reached up and tapped you on your bare nether regions.......

Cheers
JennieG

When wild animals overcome their fear of humans, it seems like they lose some of their natural fear of other predators as well. Thy're not smart enough to know that just because it turns out people don't want to eat 'em after all, the same doesn't hold for crows, snakes, or even the family cat.

Snatched him and ate him in a tree.

There are a lot of frogs out there too, so maybe you can find another froggie friend soon.

When I was a kid, I once raised a tadpole in the goldfish tank, and it did well eating fish food as it gradually grew legs and began to take on the recognizable features of a frog. Presently it was ready to move on into full frog existence, so I removed it from the tank and put it into the local pond where it seemed to fit in fine with the other young frogs. I hope it lived a successful life there (in frog terms).

Let me tell you a story about Max the ferret. My partner Dennis had this little guy and he was a great pet. He travelled in his pocket and was "hired" (with cat food and mayonnaise as his salary) to exterminate rodents in a kitchen of a logging camp in Alaska. Well, living in the wilds of Alaska, there are many critters, including bears, eagles, otters, wolverines, ravens, etc. Well, it just so happens that near by there lived an eagle named Bernie. One day while playing in the yard, Max got scooped up by Mrs. Bernie, and there ends the tale of Max. (sorry for him being your name sake, Max) He got flying lessons, and became dinner for the eaglets.

Dan, last week I had two squirrels in my garden, they'd dance from tree to tree all around the place...They've been here since I moved in and I'd sit and watch them from my outside staircase, which is high up in line with the trees almost..so they never even knew I was there...

Last week I found one of them dead on the grass...I was so upset...I buried him and filled his grave up with geranium petals..crying my eyes out as I did so...

The next morning his little buddy was on patio, still warm....

They now lie in their Geranium Grave together, friends in the after-life too...

I felt absolutely gutted for days, still do...

This was THEIR garden, I merely had the honour of sharing it with them....

The garden feels so empty now, even though the birds are still there..Without Nutty and Nutkin it's lost its sparkle and its magic.......

Red squirrels actually have an average lifespan of about 3 years, so maybe they just lived a long, natural life. Maybe they ate some bad nuts, who knows?

I get the big grey ones here, and they're fun to watch when you don't have a little bit of PTSD because one once ate a hole in your roof and lived in your attic for years, while laughing at your lame attempts to gently relocate and/or slaughter him, then you go up and he's got a girlfriend or she's got a boyfriend. I once found a newborn squirrel that fell from the eaves onto my porch in August. (Didn't make it.) They're not supposed to have babies in August, and they're not supposed to do it in a place as hot as my attic in August!

So, I'm sorry about your squirrels. I still remember how cute I thought they were, back before they ate my house.
