Subject: RE: Anyone seen Tony Bird play lately? From: Little Hawk Date: 22 Oct 11 - 01:35 AM Awright! I just got back from Tony Bird's house concert in Fesserton. Great show. Tony sang a whole lot of wonderful songs with his unique delivery and keen intensity, and the audience sure enjoyed it. He did a lot of the "African" songs plus some newer material that reflects more recent experiences in America. Some of it had a rather Dylanesque feel to it, partly because of the vocal edge, partly because of the lyrics, partly in the tunes, and he sang a tribute song TO Bob Dylan that was simply the best example of that concept I've ever heard. It's the song I WISH I'd written for Bob! I wish I had a recording of it too, but Tony has not recorded it yet. We traded CDs (his and mine) and talked about harmonica playing and all kinds of other stuff after the show. This was after not seeing Tony in 23 years, and what a treat it was to finally get to hear him again after all that time. |

Subject: RE: Anyone seen Tony Bird play lately? From: GUEST,jeff Date: 01 Oct 11 - 01:17 AM Used to swap songs w/him in the closet of the Earl of Old Town in the early 80s in Chicago after our respective sets. 'She Came From The Karoo' was always my fav. Still have copy of Tony Bird of Paradise around here someplace. He was much loved in Chicago. 'Her eyes were leopard green' is one of my all time favorite favorite lines. In as much as 'Whatchu doin' in this zone, white man?' is one of the most frightening. It's been years. Hope he's doing well. Deserving of a MUCH wider audience I always thought. |
Subject: Anyone seen Tony Bird play lately? From: Little Hawk Date: 01 Oct 11 - 01:01 AM Just asking... Tony Bird is a white South African folk musician. I saw him way back in '88 and he was marvelous. I have a chance to see him in a house concert in October and am wondering if anyone else has caught his act lately. The song I best remember of his is called "Mango Time", but all his songs are wonderful. |
