From: Genie Date: 12 Oct 11 - 12:18 AM Well, these ain't from yer award-winnin' performances, Bo-bear, but here you are playin' yer funky blues axes in the "Bobert's Blues Band" 'workshop' at the 2008 FSGW Getaway: Bobert's Blues Band 1 - 2008 Bobert's Blues Band 2 - 2008 ">Bobert's Blues Band 1 - 2008 And here you is with Lonesome EJ and Leadfingers at the 2008 Getaway concert: Bobert, LEJ, Leadfingers, Getaway concert 2008 |
Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: Bobert Date: 11 Oct 11 - 06:35 PM 4 strings, frog-p... One fat (.072ish) bass and three trebley ones (.011 to around .022, none wound), 3 hand wound pickups with one output jack for the bass and the 2 pickups for the trebley ones... Best sound is using a bass amp for the bass and a different amp for the others... There are about a hundred of these that John Lowe has made and sold to folks... I'd say that most of them are hanging on folks walls... They look easy to play but it took me two solid weeks of fighting with it before the light cam on... I think it was a day or two away from becoming wall art... lol... B~ |
Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: frogprince Date: 11 Oct 11 - 06:25 PM And yes, those definitely look like boney fingers: long, boney fingers. : ) |
Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: frogprince Date: 11 Oct 11 - 06:21 PM Achually, it was Gnu what made the link. But yes, I saw the pics; them's a couple of wild lookin' axes!. Two strings, or more, on the Lowebow? |
Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: Bobert Date: 11 Oct 11 - 05:49 PM BTW, the headless-Bobert picture at the site the frog-p linked was taken a couple last year at the Getaway... I'm not too sure who took it or how it ended up at the Cigar Box Nation site but it's the best one out there of the Lowebow and headless-Bobert's boney fingers... "Work your fingers to the bone Whadda ya get Boney fingers, boney fingers" B~ |

Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: Bobert Date: 11 Oct 11 - 04:52 PM It called the solo/duo, f-prince... That the format at the IBC... One or two doesn't matter 'cause it's all gonna be called solo/duo meaning that if I go to Memphis I can take a harmonica player with me or just play solo... Make any sense??? 3 or more is band class... The Cigar Box page was put together by Ted Crocker for me... He's the guy who built my "Back Porch" geetar which ended up being a prototype for the guitars used in Danny Glover's mover, "The Honeydripper"... B~ |
Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: frogprince Date: 11 Oct 11 - 02:34 PM I feel sorta stupid asking, but: the site confirms, winner of both solo and duo, but I don't see any pictures of a duo??? |

Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: Bobert Date: 11 Oct 11 - 09:00 AM I think there will be some YouTube but I'm not too sure how that all works... There was a real nice woman doing the recording and picture taking... She took a bunch of pics of me and showed 'um to me in her camera... I think what really iced the competition was the Lowebow... No one had ever seen one or even heard of one... Then here's this ol' gray haired guy up there with a cigar-box with 2 broom handles for a neck plugged in and cookin'... The other part was that, like back in Virginia and in DC, people just don't play that North Mississippi groove so they are curious about it... No matter... Will work on pics and YouTube.... B~ |

Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: frogprince Date: 10 Oct 11 - 02:18 PM Hey, go for it and win the IBC; is you don't want to increase your performance load that much, you can become a mysterious, reclusive blues legent. : ) |
Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: Bobert Date: 10 Oct 11 - 02:01 PM I feel bad for the guy who came in 2nd... He earns his living as a musician and is younger and I'm sure this would have helped his career... I don't necessarily want a career... I just like playing music and want to do a festival here and there... That's gonna happen as a result of this win... Memphis??? I donno??? I mean, part of me says, "Hey, you ain't gonna get any more chances" and the other part says, "Who cares??? What if you did win the IBC??? You want to go on the road???"... The answer to the second question is "Hell no!!!" No matter... It's done now... B~ |
Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: Genie Date: 10 Oct 11 - 01:24 PM Well, it was "low key" except when Rose and Abby & co-conspirators got going on bawdy songs in the Peace Cabin, maybe. |
Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: Ron Davies Date: 10 Oct 11 - 01:17 PM Fantastic. Congratulations. Sounds like they recognize quality. You sure were missed at the Getaway but maybe it was for a good cause. Though we hope you're starting to make plans now to be there next year. Don't know if we can stand 2 years without you. After all, the Getaway this year has even been branded as "low key". That's your fault (not trying to guilt-trip nobody or nuthin' like that--not much anyway.) |
Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 10 Oct 11 - 12:51 PM Gee, Bobert, you said earlier you hoped not to win, as you weren't looking forward to a trip to Memphis. Now you've won, so it's hard to know what to say. Well, the important thing is that you did a good job and you wowed 'em. Congratulations on that. You know, when someone has a happy and successful life, we say that they were born under a shining star. Sometimes I think you must have been born under a patchwork star, Bobert, because your life is so complicated. Know what I mean? |
Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: GUEST Date: 10 Oct 11 - 08:52 AM Sorry, Dani, but (pun intended) you a few trips to Bojangles shy of the BIG league... Subject: RE: Bobert Wins Charlotte Blues Challenge... From: Bobert Date: 09 Oct 11 - 09:24 PM Well, one thing I can say is that people don't play that North Mississippi groove around these parts so it's different enough... Best part about it is that this is going to open some doors to play some local festivals next year... One guy from the blues society told me he'd make a couple calls and get me in the lineups... That alone, is all I was hoping for... But now that I have won it maybe I oughtta take a shot at the IBC??? I donno... B~ |
