Subject: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: Bobert Date: 13 Oct 11 - 05:56 PM I've been thinking about this and with all the problems face *US* all we get are really dumb ideas in the way of solutions... I mean, why even have schools if we educate people and then turn around and tell them they don't know squat about squat??? PhD's in Climate Science say we're (people) creating global warming... The Koch brothers who make their billion$$$ burning stuff say no??? PhD's in Economics say we need to get money into a failing economy... Eric Cantor, who is not an economist, says no??? PhD's in biology trace mankind back tens of thousands of years... Michelle Bachmann and Rick Perry say no??? I mean, what we need is a Department that debunks stupidity and ignorance... That would be their only job... Whaddayathink??? B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: Rapparee Date: 13 Oct 11 - 06:08 PM Bobert, we need a Department of GOOD Sense. "Common" sense ain't at all common. It's one of the rarest things on Earth. |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 13 Oct 11 - 06:08 PM Richard Dawkins has tried it with respect to the Theory of Evolution vs the creationist idiots. Trouble is the idiots keep on bouncing back. |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: Greg F. Date: 13 Oct 11 - 06:12 PM What we really need to do is criminalize stupidity & start locking people up where they can't hurt themselves or others. |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 13 Oct 11 - 06:30 PM We are all born with Common Sense. The point of School is to rid us of it. We then become Good Little Proles who do what our Corporate Masters tell us to do without question. Something's gone seriously wrong with The Plan though, for they over-educated the kids, killing off their natural love of learning with constant examinatins and making them see each other purely as Grade Results... Then, one day, The Soul Faery flew back to Earth and whispered into the ears of The Young Ones "You have a RIGHT to a LIFE! You are far more than the sum of your Grade Passes! YOU are FREE PEOPLE who have been sorely abused!.....Rise Up, as One!" She gave each one the phone number of The Common Sense Faery...and now, all hell has broken loose as Souls filled with Common Sense start to take over every city in America and Europe, slowly but surely.... And a Pandemic of Common Sense is breaking forth with Tsunamic Power... |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: GUEST,999 Date: 14 Oct 11 - 04:17 AM The proposal for a Department of Common Sense was voted on by Congress. It was soundly defeated because no one could figure out how to rip off the public. Resubmit the same proposal but change the title to Department of Common Cents and it'll sail through both the House and the Senate. That's my advice to you, Bobert. |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: bobad Date: 14 Oct 11 - 08:06 AM An excerpt from a review of the book linked to by DebC above: "The pastor from Pennsylvania put it best. On the eve of a trial to determine the legality of a local school board's decision to teach intelligent design alongside evolutionary theory, the Rev. Ray Mummert, a leader of the anti-Darwin brigade, made national headlines with a statement that cut straight to the heart of America's culture wars. "We've been attacked," he protested, "by the intelligent, educated segment of our culture." |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: Richard Bridge Date: 14 Oct 11 - 08:26 AM Anyone who has watched children at play ought to be able instantly to see that we are born WITHOUT common sense and that it is education that instils it. |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: Bill D Date: 14 Oct 11 - 10:18 AM If we instituted a mandatory course in "Good, logical thinking" beginning in, say, 4th grade, it would soon be attacked by parents shouting "They are teaching my children to dispute the Bible!". Face it.... coherent, logical thinking by any large % of the populace would seriously disrupt religious and political ends. I think there is a message in the saying: "Never try to teach a pig to sing...it wastes your time and it annoys the pig!" |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: Bill D Date: 14 Oct 11 - 10:53 AM On another site I was just reminded of a semi-famous quotation: ""The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." - Bertrand Russell |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 14 Oct 11 - 11:35 AM I have read that studies show that common sense is taught at home, by families to children. But I don't know how to find the studies. However, I accept it. Turn off the media and talk with your children and grandchildren. Talk sense, not just "Quit that!" and "Go brush your teeth." |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: Donuel Date: 14 Oct 11 - 12:13 PM Cain's economic expert came up with the 999 plan. He never went to school for economics but says "you don't need to have a PHD in physics to know what will happen when you drop a bowling ball". Coincidently if you are a Sim City fan you will note that the default mode for local, state and sales taxes are 9%, 9% and 9% repectively. Never mind that the plan only works in Sim City. |

Subject: RE: BS: We Need a 'Dept of Common Sense'... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 14 Oct 11 - 01:28 PM The older I get the more I realise how little I know. A maxim I learned at school and proves true to this day. Yet as some people get older they seem to think that they know more than they really do. And what they do not know they make up. The worst of the lot are the extremists who believe that they are right, insist that those who disagree with them are guilty of persecution and that everyone will somehow benefit from endless repeats of their empty mantras. Not all extermism is religious. Glad I'm off to see one of the best jazz and blues players ever to grace the teaching profession tonight. Or maybe he is one of the best teachers every to play jazz and blues? Bringing us full circle, I don't really know :-) DtG |
