E. Lighter, Historical Dictionary of American Slang. 1836, Weingartner "Slang Dictionary: To put the pressure on (someone or something) 1867, General Stuart- Crowd 'em with artillery. 1867, Mark Twain- She crowded Lewis until he swore. 1908, New Broadway- I crowded Guiseppi a little.... (to explain something to me) 1929, Hammett, Maltese Falcon- Don't crowd me. To give forcibly: 1899, Ade, Fables- The Boss met her as she went out and crowded three dollars on her.. 1912, N. Y. Tribune- To crowd the bases (baseball) To crowd one's luck: Runyon- I was wondering if I could crowd my luck.... Crowd the mourners 1841, To add to one's difficulties. I also did more research and found those two releases by Edward Meeker as well. The first was in Feb. 1911 as below and the second that I linked to earkier with the extra verses was in April 1911. Both were recorded in 1911. Number 2 in the list (10513: Edison Standard Record) is virtually identical to the sheet music listed above (Steamboat Bill 2), differing in only a couple of words. (Incidentally the transcription should read: Try to beat the record...). Number 1 in the list (728: Edison Amberol) is the version Sandy linked above and is (again virtually) identical to the sheet music version given above, but with the 2 verses and chorus inserted after the first chorus of the sheet music. I've looked at several copies of the sheet music online and they all omit this new addition, so I don't know where they came from (yet!) Mick |

The Index names Mills as composer of the music but he should be listed as the publisher (see above postings). Collins and Byron Harlan also recorded "Casey Jones" for Columbia (A-907), in 1910. (Casey Jones was copyright 1909 by Newton and Siebert, but first appeared in print in 1908 in "Railroad Man's Magazine." See threads on Casey (Kassie) Jones) Earl, what company recorded "Casey Bill"? Here is Earl McDonald's version recorded in the 1920's, staring both Bill and Casey. CASEY BILL Now, down the river came Steamboat Bill, Spied Casey Jones coming over the hill. The engine was a-puffin' and the boiler was hot While the folks on board done the turkey trot. The railroad run down 'longside the bank. Casey crawled out from behind the tank.
