Subject: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Bobert Date: 21 Oct 11 - 09:53 PM Okay, over the years I have pumped up the virtues of Iron City Beer... Well, truth be known, it's been 15 years since my last Iron City but back then I knew I liked it so... ...I'm in Total Wine and there in the select beer area is Iron City Beer so I picked up a 6 pack and guess what??? Still a great beer!!! B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Rapparee Date: 21 Oct 11 - 09:55 PM Iron City? Good? What's next for ya, Bobert? Grain Belt? Schlitz? Strohs? Rolling Rock? Come visit; I'll buy ya some good beer, like Moose Drool or Bitch Creek or Belligerent Ass. |

Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: olddude Date: 21 Oct 11 - 11:52 PM well spending my young adult life outside of Pittsburgh i love it myself. my old man loved all beer but iron city was his main love |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: JJ Date: 22 Oct 11 - 08:17 AM There was a time when the standard order in a Pittsburgh-area bar was an Imp 'n Arn -- a shot of Hiram Imperial and an Iron City. As for Rolling Rock, they were bought out by Anheuser-Busch. The beer is no longer made in Latrobe but in New Jersey. Let's hope this never happens to Iron City... |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Ron Davies Date: 22 Oct 11 - 09:50 AM When I bought one, I couldn't pour the beer out of the can. When I did it was pure sludge. Which river do they take it out of? YMMV |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: artbrooks Date: 22 Oct 11 - 09:59 AM The brewery is about six blocks from the Allegheny, but it's straight up hill. I expect it's Pgh city water. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Rapparee Date: 22 Oct 11 - 10:07 AM I think they truck it in from from the junction of the Allegheny and the Monongahela, capturing thereby the "essence" of each. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: olddude Date: 22 Oct 11 - 12:09 PM It is the sewage that gives it the great foam guys ... geeze have you learned nothing ... I still love the old iron once in a while |

Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Rapparee Date: 23 Oct 11 - 09:46 AM I've actually drunk Iron City, right there in Pittsburgh. More than once. Neither did much for me, except the Iron City made me...ill. Just looking at it, I mean. The greasy foam, the little bits of stuff floating in the beer, the sludge at the bottom.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: artbrooks Date: 23 Oct 11 - 10:28 AM I have an (unopened) can of Olde Frothingslosh, the Pale Stale Ale with the Foam on the Bottom. Pittsburgh Brewing Company (Iron City Brewery's name before 2007) produced this up into the mid-1970s as their holiday beer. I expect it's toxic waste by now (even more than it was in the first place, I mean). |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: olddude Date: 23 Oct 11 - 10:38 AM Rap you sissy .... ya gotta pump the iron to drink iron then the grease don't bother ya and ya get use to it and like it ... sissy .... |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Rapparee Date: 23 Oct 11 - 08:14 PM I've drunk Stag, Hamm's, Stroh's, Budweiser, Grain Belt, Rolling Rock, Atlas Praeger, Coors, Griesedick (yes, that really was its name), Guinness, Harp, Smithwicks, Murphy's, Polygamy Porter, Fat Tire, Corona, Bitch Creek, Sierra Nevada, Wiederman's, Pete's, Labatt, Moosehead, Fat Tire, Blue Bicycle, Pauli Girl, Lucky Lager, Sapporro, Kirin, Tsingtao, Bass, Moose Drool, Sam Adams, and dozens more -- but nothing, nothing, compared with Iron City. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Bobert Date: 23 Oct 11 - 08:31 PM See, ya'll... Rap says that Iron City is in a class of it's own... I agree... Best beer in America... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: olddude Date: 23 Oct 11 - 09:35 PM also best beer can chicken on the grill ya can eat made with the iron |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: JJ Date: 24 Oct 11 - 08:15 AM Olde Frothingslosh was an invention of Rege Cordic, the morning man on KDKA radio. His fake ads for it became so popular that each Christmas for many years Iron City sold its beer in cans much like the one Art shows above. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Rapparee Date: 24 Oct 11 - 09:56 AM There is a beer yclept Iron City Which tastes all dirty and gritty Your teeth it will rot It tastes much like snot Those who drink it deserve all you pity. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Bill D Date: 24 Oct 11 - 11:16 AM They've been spelling it wrong... but I suppose they couldn't put the REAL name on the cans... "IRON SHITTY" Best quote I ever heard about it was Johnny Collins remark that "Unlike most American beers, it at least tastes like something" |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: olddude Date: 24 Oct 11 - 11:18 AM Are me an Bobster the only two that have real taste in great beer ... gosh ... I mean come on ... it will put hair on your chest .. male or female |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Bill D Date: 24 Oct 11 - 11:41 AM But Dan... your taste buds were ruined by hot coffee! ;>) |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: olddude Date: 24 Oct 11 - 12:05 PM very true Bill, but when they eventually come back .. I will be ready |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: RangerSteve Date: 24 Oct 11 - 07:13 PM Does anyone know if they still make Utica Club? I've noticed that the same company that made UC is now handling a couple of micro-brews, Brooklyn and Saranac. UC was what people in Utica drank when I was in college and old enough to drink. It's part of my youth, and I'd hate to think it's gone. Genesee, the other beer from western NY is still available. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Bobert Date: 24 Oct 11 - 07:19 PM "Iron Shitty", my butt, Bill... That didn't come out like it was 'sposed to... Oh geeze, that one didn't either... Think I'll quit while I'm not all that far behind... B;~) |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Bill D Date: 24 Oct 11 - 07:53 PM Utica Club seems to be thriving The real issue is...Iron City and Utica Club and Budweiser and such are all of the same basic type of beer.....fairly cheap for those who drink for 'effect', no particular distinctive flavor, and need to be pretty cold to be palatable- which makes them popular for BBQs and quenching thirst on a hot Summer day. Fine, if that's your goal. Some prefer to explore classic beer & ale with widely different flavors & strengths. (yeah..like me) (and I don't LIKE beer which needs to be cold enough to numb the taste bud so you can stand to drink it.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: gnu Date: 24 Oct 11 - 08:00 PM Bud don't mess ya up in the morning. Cancuk Bud, that is. YMMV. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Rapparee Date: 24 Oct 11 - 08:37 PM Still comes from the Clydesdales.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Bill D Date: 24 Oct 11 - 09:54 PM "12 Horse Ale" ......2 horses per bottle when you buy a six-pack. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: JJ Date: 25 Oct 11 - 08:40 AM It is interesting that at one time, the makers of Sam Adams contracted with the Pittsburgh Brewing Company to have their beer brewed there. I forget the exact year(s) and the exact reason(s), but it was plainly stated on the Sam Adams label. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: olddude Date: 25 Oct 11 - 03:07 PM Bobster they have not taste that is all ... Iron is great beer .. yah |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Bobert Date: 25 Oct 11 - 04:45 PM Sure is, Ol-ster... My late wife, Judy's people lived in "Yunks-town", Ohio and every time we'd go visit her mom I'd load up with Iron City to take back to Wes Ginny... First couple weeks I'd drenk it as if I go get some more at the Sweat Springs General Store but when I got down to the last couple of 6-packs I'd go into ration mode... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: gnu Date: 25 Oct 11 - 04:47 PM Ration yer fav beer? Ya mean, drink some shite beer first and then... or vicey versey? |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Rapparee Date: 25 Oct 11 - 07:19 PM I think he means all along, gnu. When I lived in that general area it was well known that the carbonation in IC was caused by the air pollution control devices on the Pissburgh factories being routed through the Iron City brew tanks. Cleaned up the air by trapping the pollutants in the beer. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Bobert Date: 25 Oct 11 - 08:08 PM Don't listen to Rap, gn-ze... Rap is posting from some mental hospital and doesn't know nuthin' about good beer... Might of fact, I was just ta;lking on the phone with his doc and doc says, "Sorry, Bobert, but yer good buddy, Rap, is purdy screwed up"... I says, "Is that an official diagnosis, doc???" and he says "Yeah".... That's a true story... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: gnu Date: 25 Oct 11 - 08:20 PM True story? "Just" talkin on the phone, like, just now? You mean, this is news? |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Bobert Date: 25 Oct 11 - 08:33 PM Okay, gn-ze... I mis-spoke... Just is as in "just" but this afternoon... Yup, had a nice talk with Rap's doctor... Doc says that Rap is doing okay... Not great, but okay... He thinks this Iron City thing has been a setback for the boy but also that Rap has needed something to kick start his treatment and thanked me for doing just that... Sniff... I hate to think of Rap locked up in a room with rubber walls... I sho nuff do but I hope that in some way Iron City will do for him what it has for me in seeing the light... B;~) |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: olddude Date: 25 Oct 11 - 10:27 PM when his doc told you that, he cracked open his own iron city cause the doc knows a good thing also he sure does |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Bill D Date: 25 Oct 11 - 10:51 PM We know it's "Iron City" because it attracts a magnet, even though the cans are all now aluminum. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iron City Beer... From: Rapparee Date: 25 Oct 11 - 10:58 PM That's because all of the rust that would have been in the air is now in the beer. Good for anemia, though, if you can stand the taste. |
