Dad has been home from hospital for a week, it is hard to watch someone get slowly weaker. Today is the anniversary of my mum's death 18 years ago - its hitting him very hard. Please remember him in your prayers / thoughts/ etc

Alison I've enjoyed your posts for more than a decade although we've not directly chatted. And I don't venture "below the salt" that often so I'm not often visiting this type of thread. But here I am today.

Best thoughts to you and Ryan and Shannon. Loss sucks doesn't it, including this temporary distance from your kids. Life will be okay in the fullness of time although getting through such fundamental change typically isn't a barrel of laughs. These are the times when living for the moment is all there is, whether painful or pleasurable. (Some would say that's always true...but that's another thread.) I trust completely that the coming weeks and months will result in shared memories that all of you will treasure after the illness and your dad have moved on. My heart goes out to you.

Hey al........you know we're always here and always going to do whatever we can for one of our own. While I can easily see and believe you are a fine sister and daughter, I am also completely sure you're a great Mom. I know too that Ryan and Shannon had solid parenting and the model of love and caring was shown to them every day as they grew up.

I had that too. When I woke up on my 16th birthday, I had two fantastic parents and two living grandparents and all was right with the world. When I woke up at age 23 they were all gone.......the world was different but it was still okay. I think you have given Ryan and Shannon the same things my parents gave me................

You are in my thoughts and the very best ones are for all of you.

Alison, I'm so sorry to hear this - I don't know why life sometimes seems to throw so much at us at once. My prayers are with you, your Dad and your kids. Stay strong - you will get through this and so will they. I was a little older than they are when my Dad died of cancer after a lingering illness and strangely my grandfather died soon after - Wishing all of you strength and comfort.
