"They hadn't invented the Horrendous Blue back in 1865 when I were a nipper..."

Jaysus, Liz, they'd barely invented plastic, let alone the horrendous blue colour . . . .

I used to *love* smarties when I was little. Like Patsy, it was the orange ones saved til' last. The red ones I demolished first, because they melted in your hand, as in the colour ran. The dark brown ones too. Purple were next, then pale brown, then green, then yellow as they were like sunshine...then, the ORANGE ones! Mmmmmmmm...

They hadn't invented the Horrendous Blue back in 1865 when I were a nipper...

The other thing I loved about a box of Smarties was the sellophane/cellophane/sellofane...oh, you *know*...the box was wrapped in, as it took a while to get off, so your mouth would start to water...Then, inside was the white, waxy bag, and inside that was the myriad of beautiful colours!

The candy coating was softer somehow...and I used to love sucking them until the colour had all gone (yes, I was a strange child) and then, you knew that the chocolate inside was just the right temperature to melt in your mouth...

And don't even get me started on a .Coffee Crisp. wrapped in bright yellow greaseproof paper, or Tiffin Bars, Fry's Turkish Delight, or salted peanuts from Woolworths...

And then...there was the 1d bar of Cadbury's Chocolate, when it tasted of real chocolate, all wrapped up in bright purple foil...

Bedtime! :0)

Hi, Little Hawk. There's a proverb re your story about the warrior and the soup.

Hunger is the best sauce.

Having sumebody else cook is the second-best sauce.

Penny, I admire the complexity of your approach to colors. Do you really have mauve candy where you live? By the way, are you a quilter? I can see someone with your interest in color and pattern growing up to be a quilter.

M&Ms are a poor substitute for Smarties. for a while you used to be able to get the orange ones in a box of their own.

Which M&M colour was dropped in the early 80s as the colour was supposd to give you cancer?

My mother always tried to stop me eating red coloured sweets she was under the impression that the red dye caused a reaction in children. Even now I tend to steer away from anything coloured red or pink which was a shame because up until then I loved the pink strawberry flavoured Opalfruits and red Fruit Pastilles. Plus the fact that I associate red with cochineal (beetle blood) yuck.

Well, each to his own. ;-) That's exactly the attitude any dog would take. I know. I've owned a number of dogs, and they do NOT believe in deferred gratification, but it's not because they think they might not live to enjoy it. They live entirely in the moment.

And yet, I have noticed this: If you delay their receiving a treat, they appreciate it all the more when they finally get it. It actually tastes better, because they had to wait.

This principle is explained in a number of Taoist parables. One is about a delicious bowl of soup...made all the more delicious because the hungry warrior who is waiting to eat it has to wait a looooong time! When he finally gets it from the Taoist master, he is astounded at how good it is. He asks the master what the secret ingredient is in the soup. The master smiles and replies, "The secret ingredient was time".

The warrior learns to wait, to calm and discipline the mind, and to more fully appreciate things when he tastes them.

This is one of the reasons why traditional courtship, once a lengthy process requiring much self-discipline, did a great deal to strengthen and deepen intimate relationships between men and women.

That which is ephemeral lacks depth. That which is attained too easily loses value (and respect) in the mind of he or she who attains it.

My late mother-in-law's great friend was resolutely opposed to deferred gratification. "Eat up all the nice stuff first," he would say cheerfully, "or, who knows!, you might not live to enjoy it!"

Deferred gratification is the way to go. It helps build up anticipation, and it saves the best for last, and that's the perfect way to end any story. They who hasten have missed the keener delights of knowing how to wait...

Before Nestle, and before the colours all changed, I would line them all up so that I could find how many complete sets of the colours I had, and start by eating the odd ones that weren't in a set. Then I would eat each set before starting the next set. I can't remember if I ordered the colours at all. I did like the subtle colour pairs - th4e two browns, and the mauve and pink.

I use the same method with any assortment I am given.

We used red liquorice comfits for lipstick as the shape was better.

I eat all the ones I least like first

Now that's called "deferred gratification", and it seems the obvious way to do it, for Smarties or just about anything.   But for some people it's quite the other way round - they start with the favourite and work down, and quite likely leave the stuff they like least.

Is it generational?

All joking aside, his hair is real. It's his head that is plastic.

Ya know, an emmpty Smarties box makes a decent kazoo.

M&Ms are a Smarties knockoff that melt in yer mouth and not in yer hand.

In America, we have candies called M & M's which come in different colors but all taste the same. They have a candy coating over chocolate.

Since the late 1960's, I have been asking people if, as kids, they ate M &M's in any special order. (It's just small talk. People love to talk about themselves.) There are people who eat the ugly brown and tan M&M's first and save the pretty red or green ones for "dessert." There are other people who eat the pretty ones first.

Only once or twice has anybody said that they paid no attention and ate them in any order.

Several years ago they added blue M&M's. Ghastly!

Being an expert on the subject, I can state that British and American Smarties taste different to each other, but that both are worthy of cramming as many in your mouth at one time as you possibly can to prevent having to share them.

Addiction gets you like that... Same with Revels in my case.

Apart from the brown ones originally flavoured coffee and I can understand why they disappeared but I wonder why the orange ones were always the only ones ever flavoured. My guess is that they thought orange goes better with chocolate which is why we have Terry's chocolate orange today.

When I was a child (like many others I suspect) popped the top off (saving it for later or course) and then tipped as many as I could cram into my mouth. My mother would only accept the orange ones when I offered her Smarties as she said they tasted of orange - I never believed her. Imagine my surprise that in my 30s I found out the orange ones did indeed taste of orange.

These days I no longer tip them wholesale into my mouth and always ensure the orange ones are eaten seperately so I savour the flavour.

IIRC (and according to wikipedia) brown smarties were originally coffee flavoured (YUK!!!!)

I used to eat the red ones first, because the dye would come off and my hand would turn red if I didn't.

Bill D - many years ago one of the senior male students at the school where I was working told us ("us" being the library staff, all women) that he was trying to convince his girlfriend that green M&Ms would make her horny......and she believed him. Ah, the folly of youth.

And slight thread drift, a question for Little Hawk: is Stephen Harper's hair real, or is it plastic? Inquiring minds want to know.

Cheers

Well, there's a blast from the past. My Grandma used to bring home Smarties for me whenever she'd visit home (England) or Canada. I thought of them as giant M&M's, sans the logo. I'd never quite realized that they'd the same name as my favorite US cheap haloween candy, sort of a cheap version of "Sweet-Tarts."

Always used the red ones for "lipstick", and yes, they were saved until last.
Used to like to suck through the coating then use fingernails to split them open like clams, and the chocolate's all warm and melty inside, and lick it out with tongue-tip then crunch up the shell....
Gonna have to get some...
