The Civil List only has two recipients The Queen and Prince Philip between them they cost the Exchequer £7 million per year. The Contribution of the Royal Family to the Exchequer not counting personal tax bills is somewhere around £320 million each year. So a Royal Yacht can be bought for £80 million eh? Sounds as though the deckhands have started to arrive. There may be one who needs to lie off a while until he is slightly less 'lively' (and notices that we need two Queens in the chorus, as in the verse) Picky, yes, but this job is about attention to detail. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: gnomad Date: 24 Nov 11 - 10:38 AM I heard that song in Ireland, way back in either '67 or '68. Curiously at least a couple of the natives seemed to think it too irreverent, though the same audience happily sang 'Off to Dublin in the green'. A further verse (as I remember it) went; Now, her sister Meg's got a bonny pair of legs, But she wouldn't hae a German or Greek, Peter Townsend was her choice But that didn't suit the boys, So they sent him up the creek. Back to yachts-can I come too? I think that purser would be a good position. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 24 Nov 11 - 06:56 AM There's a scots song about Elizabeth the Yen which points out (correctly) that as the Scots never had Elizabeth Tudor as their Queen, our present Queen is Elizabeth I to them. ("How can we have a second yen when the first yen's never been?") So I would therefore be Elizabeth II!!! Perhaps Her Present Maj would relish an early retirement? She could mingle among the guests and (for a small fee) recount interesting stories from her past travels with 'Pheeleep' By the way, does anyone know all the words to that scots song? I can't find them on Google. |

Yes, I have dozens of tiaras, crowns, diamond necklaces and a solid gold toilet (a bit chilly on the bum, I have to say) I also own several palaces, limos etc etc. The Good Ship Mudcat! Lovely! Do you think they'd allow Morris dancers on board?, cos I do adore Morris dancing. How much shall we charge for a cruise on board our elegant yacht? (Mudcatters and folksingers etc travel free of course) |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 24 Nov 11 - 03:23 AM Britannia used to show up at foreign ports, and the Royals would host lovely, lavish receptions. Heads of state and business people would fall over themselves to be invited. Result, lots of trade deals for UK. Having a grudge against your face, is no reason to cut your nose off. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: GUEST,Jon Date: 24 Nov 11 - 03:03 AM Gurney, according to Wikipedia. Britannia was designed so that it could be converted into a hospital ship in time of war but it was never used in this way. I'm not sure how it works but other ships also can be called up to serve in time of war. SS Canberra was one of a few that did serve during the Falklands war. for example. My guess is that HM's own would always have been very low on a call up list for wartime service. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: JennieG Date: 23 Nov 11 - 11:14 PM Eliza, could we have a throne each? How about that? Side by side, and I would like mine upholstered in green if it's OK with you. You have real tiaras????? wowsers..... We definitely have something going here, I reckon. Life on board The Good Ship Mudcat could be like a continuous folk festival. Regal waving, Queen Jennifer |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: Gurney Date: 23 Nov 11 - 10:21 PM The old Brittania was not a cruise liner, but a hospital ship, and served in that capacity. HM just got to use it when Britain wasn't at war. After a repaint. That's what I remember from my childhood, anyway. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: BTNG Date: 23 Nov 11 - 11:41 AM Actually I don't think it'll ever be built. The speculative articles in the press are all based around a campaign mounted by likes of The Daily Stale, The Daily Torygraph and their acolytes, and you know who you are, and they'll be campaigning hard you can bet. ......and speaking of benefit scroungers and tax gougers I see the old royal yacht is finally earning its keep as a tourist attraction berthed at Leith Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh. all the Royal Yachts have been designated yacht since they were first built, so seemingly accuracy is not been asked for. The United Kingdom has had 83 royal yachts since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. Charles II himself had 25 royal yachts, while five were simultaneously in service in 1831. Since the decommissioning of Britannia in 1997 the Queen no longer has a royal yacht. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: ChrisJBrady Date: 23 Nov 11 - 11:10 AM Actually the Britannia was not a 'yacht' in any sense of the word - it was a cruise liner, albeit a small one. It has no sails whatsoever. But I'd like to see her Maj. leaning over the side feeding the fish as they tend to do on tall ships. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Royal Yacht...! From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 23 Nov 11 - 05:22 AM LOL! I have SEVERAL million-pound tiaras of my own, thank you Queen Jennifer! Lovely sea shanties by Mudcatters, viewing Camilla's tampons, free tiaras, petting zoo, cabaret by HM every night and no doubt lashings and lashings of... champagne!
