Breaking news today:

"Sir Philip Green said his retail empire has seen a near 40% slide in profits as chains including Top Shop and Miss Selfridge chose not to pass on increasing costs to cash-strapped customers.

Arcadia Group, which also includes BHS, Burton and Evans, reported underlying pre-tax profits of £133.1 million compared with £213.1 million last year, as like-for-like sales including VAT fell 1.8%.

Sir Philip said the company, which has 2,507 stores across its brands, saw margins squeezed by 1.8% as it took a £53 million hit to absorb price increases.

Elsewhere, the company reported a bottom-line loss of £120 million after writing down the value of "certain onerous leases" across the estate due to the challenging economic conditions.

The retail sector has been feeling the pinch as household budgets are squeezed by rising prices, sluggish wage growth and battered confidence." There's also something about not being able to sell winter stock because of the unseasonal weather in the UK.

When I look at high streets and shopping centres, in the UK, I note millions of square feet of retail space devoted to the selling women's clothes.

Here's a thought: Do 50% of the human race have it within their power to bring down modern capitalism - just by buying less clothes? Today's news suggests that they may do!

People bought few clothes during the Great Depression; capitalism changed somewhat but remained the system of choice. I see no threat; it is the only game in town.

Most of us are capitalist born and bred, and like a little fling on the market now and then. Wouldn't recommend clothing retailers at this time ! Luxury brands are doing well, largely due to the Asian market.

It is a huge factor in various economic aspects of lives. Too many people working too many hours for their health and family life, and part of it is to support their clothing purchases. Some clothing we need to keep the weather out and some to somewhat adorn ourselves and compete in the mating game..but some is unnecessary..addictive perhaps. We could put any time and money saved to better use..more sleep, more savings, better food and cooking and still preserve the healthier aspects of capitalism. mg

Probably true - but there probably weren't millions of square feet of retail space devoted to women's clothes during the Great Depression (?)

I'd agree with all of that. But then I am a man - and, to me, buying clothes is a boring and hateful activity to which I prefer to devote as little time as possible ... I do buy too many books though ...

Don't discount the advertising media and the push for the latest fashions.
Women can learn to be creative and shop less, making their own clothes.
What passes for fashion these days looks ridiculous and impractical.
I doubt that just women not buying clothes will change the system. Capitalism
has to be restructured and the crooks on Wall Street jailed.

The solution is simple: stop shopping as much as possible or only shop at
local small stores and not the big retailers.

There seems to be a boom in the sales of sewing machines. Not, however, in the availability of a range of fabrics for clothes. Furnishing fabrics, yes. Interesting to see if fabric outlets increase.

Retail Fashion stores have been charging exhorbitant prices for far too long and I believe that most people are beginning to see sense and mostly buying now when it is absolutely necessary. The 'healthy lifestyle' stores are also equally to blame charging stupid prices on outdoor clothes and shoes. They deserve to go bust.

that's the wonderful thing about the democratic process, people have choices, including where to shop, I know I do.

sewing machines are good for altering and remaking clothes already owned and picked up from charity shops and yard sales. Some dry cleaners have sales of unclaimed items.
