Wonderful stuff.Could have been longer of course - it sounded as if it was edited down from half an hour (but Joan still cheekily squeezed in a bit of one of her own songs for no apparent reason!).
I love this series, when I get to hear it, because even if its someone you dont know, like the Franz Ferdinand guitarist they had on monday, its always interesting - to a guitarist at least.

Only 15 minutes, alas, but well worth catching - Joan Armatrading features the folk-rock songwriter-singer-guitarist Richard Thompson in the third of five programmes she is doing about guitar luminaries.
It went out on BBC Radio 4 this lunchtime but is available on demand HERE for the next seven days. (May not be available outside UK.) The preceding programme, featuring Sharon Isbin, is still available for five more days for anyone interested in classical guitar.

Al, then came Hold Down a Chord. John Pearce arrived on the scene much later than Weedon (I think he was only 20 when the book of the series came out) but shuffled off this mortal coil years ago - but not before leaving another useful legacy.

Thanks for the link George, but when i went to the website I couldn't see any episode featuring Richard Thompson. If you can give me any more info, I'll make a clickable link direct to the relevant episode.

Yes it was a lovely book. and it provided a start for lots of us. there was another one. A blue one - I couldn't make head nor tail of it. Lots of dots on a fret diagram. It had a picture of Alma Cogan in it.

incidentally I was happy to discover that Bert Weedon is still alive and kicking at the age of 91, notwithstanding breaking his back in a fall a year or two ago. A video version of Play in a Day is available on his website. The website notes that Mark Knopler credits Play in A Day as a major influence. Elsewhere Knopfler has credited Richard Thompson as his other mentor.

Nice 15 minutes - thanks for the heads-up! Good to hear he started with Bert Weedon's "Play In A Day" - just like the rest of us. Also very interesting to hear that he had classical lessons - he said himself that this gave him a real boost.

If ever there was such a thing as a National Treasure in the UK, Richard Thompson is it. Some people, apparently, don't "get" him. Their loss.
