Subject: BS: How we looked 40 years ago From: Will Fly Date: 18 Dec 11 - 06:17 AM I was going through some old pics recently - and mused on the changes brought on by 40 years of living... 40 years on... That was me - how was it for you? Any visual admissions to make? |

Subject: RE: BS: How we looked 40 years ago From: Musket Date: 18 Dec 11 - 08:33 AM I wasn't very photogenic forty years ago, and have gone downhill since. Let's see, forty years ago... I knew how to run the world, could solve all its problems and once I mastered The Bert Weedon Play in a Day book, might use my "axe" as a tool to eradicate dodgy governments and use my charisma to change the world. Then my balls dropped. Interesting, then I found being guitarist had other advantages. Sod the world, just allow it to move for me on a Saturday night.. Never been the same since, actually. Sorry, enough ruddy pics of me around without promoting the sods... |

It's the styles from the 70s that gets the laughter from my sons with the wide lapels and wide trousers. My mother always said that it looked like I was going to take off. |
Subject: RE: BS: How we looked 40 years ago From: number 6 Date: 22 Dec 11 - 09:15 AM Thank you frEDA. Those photos are of me taken in 1968 when I was 17, and now ... layered on a jpg I have of some eastern European document of some sort ... a visa maybe, or maybe a driver's licence. The intention was purely in jest. While composing it I had the startling realization that the title was more relevant to the current so called western free world than when I was 18 in the time of Dick Nixon and the Soviet Bloc. biLL .... :) |
Subject: RE: BS: How we looked 40 years ago From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 22 Dec 11 - 09:48 AM Luckily I haven't any photos, but I confess to buying, in the seventies, full-length floral nightdresses from Littlewoods stores, and teaming them with a black 'maxi' crocheted waistcoat. I plaited my extremely long hair with scarves and ribbons woven in, and put a hippie band round my forehead a bit like a native American, with a flower stuck in it. What a sight! But I fondly imagined I was trendy and attractive. We all used a perfume called Aqua Manda, a bit musky. As I had very bandy legs, the full-length fashions suited me. Smock-tops were 'in', (and they're 'in' just now, very good for hiding fat bottoms!) |
Subject: RE: BS: How we looked 40 years ago From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 22 Dec 11 - 10:09 AM Eliza you had the look I was trying to achieve wow! Yes I used Aqua Manda too. There was a certain oil that was used too (Patchoulli?) it had a kind of lemony smell. My hippier friends were burning joss sticks but I was forbidden because my mum thought that it would make the neighbours think that I smoked cannabis! You must remember Biba boutiques. I thought at the time that the make-up was amazing and found this strange lilac blusher in a pot in reality it must have looked hideous. |

I had dozens in different perfumes burning away in my little bedsit. And yes, I do remember Biba boutiques. i had white lipstick and almost black eyeshadow, I must've looked like a death's head! |
Subject: RE: BS: How we looked 40 years ago From: Will Fly Date: 22 Dec 11 - 12:18 PM No no, DrugCrazed - don't go! Read... learn... wonder... It all happened. You'll be amazed. :-) Whether you wanted be to or not. I played at Biba's restaurant in London occasionally - with a band called Susan Brown and her band of Renown. But I never wore white lipstick and black eyeshadow. |
Subject: RE: BS: How we looked 40 years ago From: katlaughing Date: 22 Dec 11 - 01:19 PM White lipstick! I'd forgotten about that. Had some, too! Also, my ex-sisters-in-law, who were all like little sisters to me, claim I had some white go-go boots, but I don't remember any!LOL |
Subject: RE: BS: How we looked 40 years ago From: GUEST,maryrrf (no cookie) Date: 22 Dec 11 - 01:23 PM Errr...I still burn Joss sticks and sometimes wear Patchouli. Back in the day I had white lipstick, white gogo boots, black wet look boots (AND a wet look coat). I remember back in 1968 or so the makeup we all thought was the greatest was Yardley. |
Subject: RE: BS: How we looked 40 years ago From: Charmion Date: 22 Dec 11 - 01:50 PM White lipstick? Anyone remember white lipstick -- and ironing your hair? This would be circa 1965, rather more than 40 years ago ... Very mod, Ottawa Valley style. I'm still racking my brains for any snapshots of me that might have survived my dad's Grand Purge of 1982. There aren't many, which is probably a good thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: How we looked 40 years ago From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 22 Dec 11 - 02:46 PM You're quite right Charmion, I think white lipstick was a Twiggy thing, which would place it in the sixties! I used to smother myself in Yardley's Black Rose talcum powder. And I loved my 'sling-back shoes', I had a pair of white ones. In winter we all wore incredibly long knitted scarves, wound round and round and trailing on the floor, and matching bobble hats. |
