Subject: RE: Best female guitar players? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 20 Jan 12 - 10:06 AM Carol Hunter and Janis Ian After leaving Juilliard, Carol Hunter moved to Los Angeles and became a session guitarist before being hired by Neil Diamond as the lead guitarist for his live band from 1969-71. Hunter's guitar and vocals were included on the Diamond record Gold. The Secret Life Of J. Eddy Fink (1968) by Janis Ian, whose real name is Janis Eddy Fink. The band is Carol Hunter (bass, guitar), Buddy Salzman (drums), Joe Price and Richie Havens (percussion). Janis Ian; The first time I met Chet Atkins in the flesh, he grinned, handed me a Gibson, and said "Play me something pretty". Now I'd seen him playing my songs on TV, and I knew there'd be nothing pretty about it if I attempted to play as well. So I demurred, saying I wasn't a guitarist but a songwriter. "Horse hockey. I've heard your records. Now, sit back and play something pretty." Not a request, but a command. I played whatever came to mind, then we went to lunch. |
Subject: RE: Best female guitar players? From: GUEST,Bored wife who loves guitar music Date: 20 Jan 12 - 10:45 AM "Every time I go to a gig that's mainly instrumental guitar music, (For example Tommy Emannuel, Pierre Bensusan, Bob Brozman) it's at least 95% blokes, and a smattering of bored looking wives and girlfriends. If women don't like to listen to it, then they're not likely to want to learn to play it I suppose." Duh, sweeping statement if i ever heard one. No i'm never bored - Male or female guitarist and i've seen a few. Bonnie Riatt is a wonderful guitarist, she gets a vote from me. Love Janis Ian and Christine Collister always entertains. |
Subject: RE: Best female guitar players? From: GUEST Date: 20 Jan 12 - 10:48 AM @ Greg B and Mark S - Nancy Wilson is/was the guitar player in Heart, her sister Ann the vocalist. Back on topic, in the bluegrass field, I recently saw a very impressive young flatpicking guitar player, Courtney Hartman, who is part of the all-female band Della Mae. I saw them a few times in Germany and her guitar breaks were really fantastic. She's still a student at Berklee College of Music and apparently started out on fiddle! Here's a clip: Courtney plays Billy in the Lowground (with mando and fiddle) Courtney Hartman website |

Subject: RE: Best female guitar players? From: GUEST,roderick warner Date: 20 Jan 12 - 03:19 PM Saw the name Judy Henigan up there and remembered her from when she came to the UK in the 80s - very good guitar player. The late Emily Remler was a superb player in the conventional jazz world. My current favourite - Mary Halvorson, based in New York. I saw her with Anthony Braxton a few years ago in London and she impressed - her recordings since then have gone from strength to strength - covers a wide sonic palette but way past the old bebop/modern jazz stuff... |

Subject: RE: Best female guitar players? From: Greg B Date: 20 Jan 12 - 07:44 PM Sort of realized that Nancy was the player, with Ann (Dreamboat Annie) as the singer was the guitarist just after I posted. Sorry, Nancy. And Barracuda is just an awesome riff. |

Subject: RE: Best female guitar players? From: GUEST Date: 21 Jan 12 - 12:42 PM Since rock and roll music is an oxymoron to me, that category doesn't exist. |
