Subject: BS: 1911 UK Census - confused! From: GUEST,George Frampton Date: 27 Jan 12 - 08:34 AM I use Census returns to identify family relationships, occupations, and addresses, among other things when I do heritage work relating to traditional performers. Up to 1901, Ancestry.co.uk gives all this, but not so the 1911 Census at first glance. Have I missed something? I'm trying to find out as much as I can about the singer George Spicer's parents, from whom he learnt some of his songs, but only his mother is listed (cryptically) where I expected to find it, although his future father-in-law appeared on cue (without his wife or any family members stated). Has anyone else the same experience? |

Subject: RE: BS: 1911 UK Census - confused! From: Will Fly Date: 27 Jan 12 - 05:56 PM You can do a broad search on the 1911 Census for free, but to see specific details for a particular address, you have to pay by buying credits. Credits are £0.12p each. You can see a transcript of the data for an address for 10 credits and, for 30 credits, view the actual census return. Once paid for, the record stays in your file, to be looked at as many times as you like. The full 1911 Census is not part of the paid Ancestry package, so you can search and view the summary books for free with Ancestry. To see more - you buy credits from the 1911 Census site. |

Subject: RE: BS: 1911 UK Census - confused! From: Crane Driver Date: 27 Jan 12 - 07:11 PM Ancestry is slowly transcribing the 1911 census - it's not a job you can do overnight. Some parts of it are searchable now, but not all. (The Wales census is complete, for example. England is obviously a much bigger job) The images are all there, so if you know the address you can find the return, but it will take a while before you can be confident of finding the information by searching on a name. Find My Past had a head start on transcribing the census and has it mostly all searchable already, so if you can find a library or record office with a subscription, you can search there. Or, as Will says, go to the Census 1911 site (part of Find My Past) and buy credits for just those searches you need. |

Subject: RE: BS: 1911 UK Census - confused! From: Charley Noble Date: 27 Jan 12 - 08:42 PM One of my volunteers was using this to research Cicely Fox Smith and her family, and we discovered that she was still resident in England at the time, instead of in Canada from 1905-1913. It's a great resource when you learn how to use it , and invest in credits. Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: 1911 UK Census - confused! From: Noreen Date: 28 Jan 12 - 09:50 AM I have found my grandfather's family details from the 1911 census on Ancestry.co.uk; the only section 'redacted' is the final column dealing with infirmities, which has been hidden due to its sensitive nature... presumably these will be fully available at some future date. Ancestry do a 10day free trial, which is great as long as you remember to cancel the trial before they take the first payment. Pubic libraries in some areas (Worcestershire and Lancashire do, I know) have the library version of Ancestry available free of charge. |
