Does anyone know the name of an American folk/bluegrass trio that came to the UK in the early 70's, although I think they had been around a while before that. I seem to remember a fiddle, guitar and banjo. The leader was Tom something. I have a few tunes on tape including "Nickety Nackety Now Now Now" and a guitar and spoons duet. There was also a tall story about an old Ford car that died and then fixed itself and a double-barrelled gun that shot ducks up the river and geese down the river or vice versa!! I've been racking my brains. Please help.

Hey,

Sounds like the Kingston Trio. One of them was named Tom. I don't know those songs but it's the right style.

Good luck, Jennifer

Sounds like The New Lost City Ramblers with Tom Paley, John Cohen and Mike Seeger.

In the early-'70s, it wouldn't have been the New Lost City Rambers with Tom Paley. He left the group around '62 or so and was replaced by Tracy Schwarz.

Oh Mike - you're right! I forgot , I was only 8 years old then. I had the good fortune of hearing this band at Mariposa Folk Fest in the 70's, and at the Brandywine Mt. Music Convention as well. Their recordings of old time music changed the course of my entire life. Thank you Ramblers for giving me the old time music disease! Tracy is coming to town shortly -for those of you in and around Toronto.

Arnie,

I was also 8 years old in '62. I started listening to the Ramblers on record around 1970 or so and also probably saw them for the first time at a Mariposa FF.

A couple of years ago, Mike Seeger, Tom Paley and John Cohen were all booked as individuals at the Champlain Valley FF in Burligton, VT and did what may have been their first set together in 35 or so years. An historic moment that I'm glad I was there to see.

Thank you for the interest in my query. I was 20 in 1962! I saw the group in Kingston, London, UK in the early 70's. The fiddler was younger than the other two and I got the impression he was relatively new to the group. Tom Paley was on the recordings I've got so it's obviously earlier stuff. Thanks for the information.

Had a reunion last Nov of the old gang who played at the Hoots Yale univ. when the Ramblers were formed. John Cohen showed up Still great as ever. Some where I have an old 10 inch LP put out on Electra by Tom Paley.in 1953 He is now living in England, Comes to The USA every summer for concerts. I still think they are the best ever. After Yale tom went to the U-Conn in 1955 or so and was active with the Folk song club there.

After leaving The Ramblers Tom, Artie Rose and Roy Berkely formed a neat group called the Old Reliable String Band. Less frenetic than the Ramblers and more ballad oriented.

What we need is a NLCR fan club Lets bring them back. I believe the Library of Congress has some of their tapes for sale

The NLCR were catalysts for other musicians to form stringbands to play and search out old time music and revive it. Now there are numerous fine bands and performers playing the music and keeping it alive and fresh and exciting- and also taking it in new directions as well. Over the years some of my favorites have been: Highwoods Stringband Red Clay Ramblers Fuzzy Mountain Stringband Hollow Rock Stringband The Arm and Hammer Stringband The Double Decker Stringband The Volo Bogtrotters The Chicken Chokers The Horseflies Bruce Molsky & Big Hoedown

How 'bout "Ragged But Right"?

there is a recording of Jerry Garcia in 63 with his band at the time, The sleepy mountain hogstompers in which at the begining of the first set he proudly proclaims "now were going to play you all a bunch of songs we stole from TNLCR."
just a little evidense of there wide reaching appeal.

Garcia's set lists for performances at the time always included traditional old time songs - I'm sure they learned from NLCR.

Rick - Ya "Ragged But Right" happens to be one of my current favorites too.

Jerry Garcia's song, "Uncle John's Band," is a tribute to the New Lost City Ramblers.

Uncle John = John Cohen of the NLCR

A lot of the stuff on the duo albums that Garcia did with David Grisman comes from the NLCR. Also a lot of the stuff on the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band album.

didn't know that about uncle johns band. i'm a little ashamed to admit that considering if i had to name my two biggest influences they would be Jerry and NLSR. you learn something new every day. this place is great.
