I played with these guys in Lake Charles a couple years back. They ARE KT, no matter what the personnel changes have been. The music and the show is absolute KT and 2 of them have been with them since way way back (25+) ... To think that the original lineup is the ONLY legit lineup is short sighted. Where do you draw the line? Big name bands have always replaced players as they leave.

Especially in this case; these guys have honored the KT tradition and participated in it for decades (banjo player is a short timer, 5 years or so). And they have carried the continuity of KT through all the years.

I wonder if it was "Stanley Allison Rogers" or the other one.

Note to whoever wrote their songlist notes: "Stanley" Rogers? Are you kidding me? "Stanley"?

The Sons of the Pioneers last two original members retired in 1949 yet their best known record came out in 1959, a stereo LP on RCA called "Cool Water". I prefer most of the versions of their classic songs from that album. Their "classic lineup" was great, especially Bob Nolan's singing and Karl Farr's wonderful guitar work, but both lineups "authentic" in their own way.

It does not necessarily follow that the current Kingston Trio is a worthy replacement for the original, but it is "the only game in town".

I have a hard time thinking of any current group as "The Kingston Trio", too. But we have a 2009 Ford. You wouldn't find a single component in it the same as the the first Ford I ever drove, a '49.

Joe, Too bad you didn't see the original trio or the trio when John Stewart replaced Dave Guard. I thought they were quite entertaining, and don't recall any bathroom humor. They led me to explore more traditional folk music. One of my favorite songs they did was "Scotch and Soda", composer unknown, so I guess it is a real folk song.

I saw the Kingston Trio perform only once - I think it must have been in the late 1980s or early 1990s. It was Bob Shane, George Somebody, and some other old guy....and that's what they seemed like - some old guys who used to be somebody and now were bitter and crude. They had a lot of bathroom humor - I guess old guys get fixated on that. They sang the songs pretty well, but without any heart. I think perhaps that Dave Guard and John Stewart were the heart of the Kingston Trio. It always seemed to me that Bob Shane was the business manager of the Trio, not its heart. Many folksingers age gracefully, but these guys did not.

I have all of the "original" Kingston Trio albums on CD, and I still love them. This one live performance turned me off, since it seemed they were just has-beens going through the motions. Maybe the new members of the group can bring back some of the Kingston Trio's old spirit.

In an effort to promote the new upcoming Kingston Trio it was easier to set up the marketing campaign using a separate web site rather then having to make a lot of changes to the existing site. I can assure you that http://www.kingston-trio.com is a totally legitimate site supporting the release of the new CD -- Once you register which involves "Liking" the official Kingston Trio Facebook page and signing up to our newsletter -- you will get access to a free song download (from the new CD) and a discount code for 15% off the CD. Once you are all signed up you are taken to the official Kingston Trio Store web site to actually buy the CD.

Bonzo3legs: No need to get offended by my question.

In asking it I was actually hoping for an intelligent and informative answer, not a disparaging remark.

I did follow the Kingston Trio (with mixed feelings) through the 60's, and even saw one of their last concerts (in the late 60's...with John Stewart) and enjoyed it.

But the question does come up with any group is when is the use of the original name still an act of integrity, and when is it a way to give people who would otherwise be 'unknowns' undeserved (or maybe deserved) publicity?

I suspect that an argument could be made either way w. the Kingston Trio because of the involvement of Bob Shane and their 'pride' in selecting the songs the same way the original Kingston Trio did.

In actuality I am interested in giving a listen to the new album, primarily because of a John Stewart song that I'm not familiar with.

"How can you call it a Kingston Trio cd when there's not a single original member on it?"

Usual expected negativity as shown re the Albion Band!!!

Very much looking forward to the new CD

The kingston-trio.com URL seems to work fine. It leads to a page for the new album, while the http://www.kingstontrio.com/ address leads to the main Kingston Trio Website.

Here's the info from the correct site, as noted by Janie:

Born At The Right Time CD

New! Not a traditional Kingston Trio song on it! The Kingston Trio (Bill Zorn, George Grove and Rick Dougherty) has wanted to record a CD of all new material for a long time. Finally, they decided, the time had come. All 3 guys brought in songs, as did Bob Shane, original Kingston Trio founder. Over a several year period, the songs were whittled down, then finally agreed upon. The current Trio kept with the Kingston Trio tradition of considering only songs that everyone liked. The recording process started in June of 2011, and now - almost a year later - here it is!! Wait until you see the CD packaging, it is fantastic. Kudos to the Trio, we love it!

The Kingston Trio is indeed releasing a new CD "Born at the Right Time". It can be ordered beginning March 22 and will be shipped April 4 per kingstontrio.com. The web address in the OP is incorrect, but the other details all check out on the KT website.

I"m not sure I have heard the KT since Dave Guard left back in the dark ages. Guess I'll go search Youtube.
