I saw a cartoon in which Steve Jobs arrives at the gates of heaven. He says "Hey, I'm a Buddhist. Don't I get to be reincarnated?" In the next frame, he's a little Chinese boy assembling iPads in a factory.

At the Foxconn factory in China, where Apple computers are made, they have put nets all around the building to catch the suiciders.

The cartoon says it. He lined up with the Randists on labor policy. I am told he was not a good person to work for in the US or in China. Plausible deniability, anyone? Let's see how things turn out with the new boss.

Hardly SLAVE labour if they are within the local legislated hours?
Opportunist, but certainly not limited to Apple.
How's he settling in at the new job?

As long as they keep making these, I'll be happy :o)

Quite often, it's a fine line between interference and and a form of sabotage. We, in the West often wish to impose our standards on whoever - whether they want it or not.

Then the media get involved and people who HAD a job now find themselves bereft - all to appease the collective conscience of the West's busy bodies. It happens all over the world. Without the jobs, the local populace are generally worse off.

Seriously, I don't support any form of 'slave' labour, but a great deal more thought should be applied before the moral entrepreneurs march in to 'save' the workforce. It often just isn't that simple.

Saint Stephen of Jobs? The one the media and everyone else cannonized on his death? Can't be. Say it ain't so, Joe!

Here in California, Apple was touted as the ideal reporter. When the iMac was introduced in 1998, it was built in a brand-new factory in Sacramento County, and the area took great pride in that new factory. I soon learned that while a good number of employees had good salaries and benefits, many were temporary employees without benefits, allowed to work only six months per year. Not so idyllic as the press releases described. Within two years, Apple had moved all iMac production overseas and the Sacramento County factory was turned into a warehouse - and a lot of workers here were out of work.

Sad.

"too bad it's all corrupt".

Presumably, you mean China. I worked on contract in Bangladesh for a year - corrupt, I worked in and out of Nigeria - corrupt, worked in and out of Uganda, I live in UK - a lot of corruption, I've visited most parts of the world . . .

I noticed that where ever people lived, there tended to be corruption, either overt or covert, but there nevertheless.

It's just the level of corruption that matters. Minor stuff you can live with, major stuff sucks - it's at the core of exploitation.

There ARE some really good ethical companies out there, but there are a lot more that aren't - major aerospace companies both sides of the Pond being high on the list.

I've had enough now, it's boring and frustrating because there's Jack you can really do about it.
