A Lewes Saturday Folk Club Workshop

SINGING FOR BEGINNERS DAYTIME WORKSHOP
Want to sing but a little nervous that the right sounds won't come out on demand?

Tutor Haley Stevens
SATURDAY 19TH. MAY
Elephant & Castle, White Hill, Lewes BN7 2DJ
10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m.         Places £15

Haley is an experienced, exuberant singing coach who runs regular workshops in Sussex & London.
She loves teaching, using humour & a relaxed & friendly atmosphere to put people at ease.
She is a trained classical singer & performer.

In the morning Haley will share some exercises to build up confidence: warm-ups, body posture, breathing, improving tone, stamina & volume. There will be some easy rounds & songs to sing in the group.

In the afternoon, people will sing songs they have chosen themselves and Haley will help singers to apply practical techniques to get the best out of their voices.

IN THE EVENING LEWES SATURDAY FOLK CLUB HOLDS A SINGAROUND: 'ROBIN & THE MERRY GREENWOOD' (Admission £3, 8.00 – 11.00 p.m.)
Bring songs & tunes on the theme, or anything else you'd like to sing, or just join in the choruses. Everyone welcome.

We have five places left for this. If you'd like to come please bring the right money in cash on the day; let me know if possible what song you'd like to tackle in the afternoon session.

In the evening the Lewes Saturday Folk Club has a singaround on the theme of 'Robin and the merry greenwood'. We will be singing songs & ballads of Robin Hood & general woodland activities (poaching, nutting, hunting, disposal of by-products of crime, al fresco how's your father, etc.) We also suggest wearing something green.

Bring songs and tunes on the theme. If you'd like to reserve one and be sure of not getting pipped at the post, let me know on this thread.

Those chosen so far are:

Robin Hood & the Curtal Friar
Robin Hood & the Bishop of Hereford
Willie & Earl Richard's Daughter
Death of Robin Hood
Robin Hood Was a Forester Good

We'll also be joined by some of the people attending the Tradsongs Forum in Lewes that day.

This workshop went extraordinarily well. Nineteen people attended; we'll do it again.

It was an emotional experience for the tutor as well as the pupils as some people who'd been told for years that they couldn't sing not only found their voices, but started to sing out and sing well. Haley is a trained classical singer and performer, but doesn't have that operatic bel canto tone which is fatal to traditional song.

The club put the workshop on, and was prepared to subsidise it if necessary, in order to encourage people to sing and give them not only confidence but also practical techniques to overcome nerves, improve pitch, control breathing and so on.

Tootle pip,

Valmai
