xkcd, the nerd's favorite web comic, has a wonderful infographic comparing the depths of the worlds lakes and oceans, with a few other things for scale, like the Titanic, Edmund Fitzerald, and Deepwater Horizon well: Lakes and Oceans.

If you hover your cursor over the graphic, you get some additional text -- this is true for all xkcd comics.

Also, if you click on the image itself, you get a large format version (so you can actually see the details). Here's an intermediate/zoomable version, from Gawker.com.

What are David Bowie & Freddie Mercury doing there? (I assume it's a joke, but I don't think I get it.)

What's the story behind James Cameron's mysterious door?

Yeah, I need help with David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, too... kinda hoped some 'Catter could help! ;-)

It is a comic, after all...

Fun fact... that fun fact about ships sinking in shallow water is no mystery. Waves get bigger in shallow water. I've been to the beach and seen it first hand.

xkcd is very likely one of the best webtoons around today. Actually, many webtoons are good simply because they are actually intelligent.

THE best, from an intellectual standpoint. Fairly primitive from an artistic standpoint, but that's not what the author is after.

Actually, many webtoons are good simply because they are actually intelligent.

Girl Genius is so far ahead of anything else, overall, that there's no comparison. IMO, of course, but then, I AM the center of the Universe (my Universe, I mean). Questionable Content would be perhaps next.

Peter

PEter, it strikes me as purely wonderful that you have described three of my very favorite 'toons. Who knew?? I feel vindicated in my insulated idiosyncrasy!

Peter and Amos, and here I was thinking I was the only "elder" who enjoyed those three! I started reading them when my daughter was in college, to see what she was enjoying.
There's also Wondermark and Hark, a vagrant .

Great for nerdy minds!

Reminds me of a cartoon I saw recently.

Customer to librarian: "Where are your self-help books?"

Librarian: "If I told you, it would defeat the purpose, wouldn't it?"

Speaking of Girl Genius - today's strip has perhaps what will become one of the classic lines in the whole strip.

"A charming pair of innocent hostages." Poor stupid bastard!

Peter.
