Wore my bright red Capitals t-shirt to the gym yesterday. A beefy guy carrying a foam "pool noodle" looking thing almost bumped into me and we both said "excuse me". He then said "I should smack you with this for wearing that shirt". I smiled as sweetly as I know how and replied "Let's talk about it tomorrow".
Wonder if he's going to be at the gym tonight... :-)

Sweeeet!

Sandy... not necessarily, but that hit WAS dirty shit. Worse than that, to me, is when he taunts smaller players into fights and then beats the shit out of them. I, seriously, think that should land him in jail and he should be suspended.

Adrien, I started out as a Montreal fan In the days of the Rocket and the Boomer. When I was 10 or 11 I visited my older brother in Ontario and he took me to Maple Leaf Gardens for my first live NHL game, the Leafs against the Hawks. He is a big Leaf fan and this converted me to his side. At the time the Leafs were dogmeat but they beat the Hawks that night, and I have rooted for the blue & white ever since. I danced for joy four times in the 60's but the gruel has been thin since the expansion. In that game both Mahovlich and Hull were rookies. Mikita was not there yet. Ted Kennedy was making a comeback. My favourite player became Tim Horton and I spent many an hour trying to duplicate his slapshot. Mikita was born a Czek but was raised and learned his hockey in Canada. I have often seen it stated that he was the first European in the NHL but I believe that he was the second. A fellow, I believe by the name of Jack Evans, was born in Wales and was playing with the Rangers earlier but I may be proven wrong.

A bit of research reminds me that Jack Evans closed out his career with the Hawks and that he and Mikita were teamates. This Ted Kennedy was famous long before his political namesake.

Well, back in the late 50s, CGBS had hockey on Sunday afternoons, and I fell into loving it, and rooting for the Bruins and Blackhawks. Then hockey dropped out of sight (i.e., CBS dropped them and cable wasn't invented yet, at least where I lived) and I went on without it.

Then DC got an expansion team, and I watched the Capitals through the early days (I remember when Scott Stevens was a Cap, for instance) at the Capital Center in Landover, MD, and then in their new home, the phone booth (MCI Center, now Verizon Center) in downtown DC.

I've learned to live with disappointment and excitement and expensive food and seats and the occasional Internet idiot who says to trade the goalie after only one poor outing.

My son now carries on the tradition. I've trained him well.

Bob

Rangers/LA for the Final. (Rangers for the Cup.)

We are enjoying hockey that lacks the hype of the superstars-- you get to see THE GAME.

i was elated to see tyhe bruins gone. they werte the worst goons in years last year. however the rangers have done a fair bit of goonery this year. they do look like the favourite now.

sorry sandy i really hatyed marchand last year. all that after the whistle face punching. in no other sport can you get away with that. that's an automatic expulsion from the game in every other sport and it demeans hockey as a bush league sport. that's a shame as when played right it is the most exciting sport in the world.

i have long been a canadiens fan. i got to see two home games in the 71 cup year, against the bruins--who they upset in the first round. great games in a great atmosphere.

i really thought the rangers gooning on karlsson ought to have been rewarded with a few suspensions but the nhl has no rules in the playoffs. however it's nice to see the western series between two underdogs. who to root for? maybe shane doan for his career long leadership or la for drew doughty?

i just hope the canadiens don't blow the high draft pick they have this year. grigrirenko could be another kostystin, farsberg or murry may just not be top five guys. who knows but i'd go for forsberg. montreal has had good luck with swedes

Well, it's gonna be somethin. The Devils so disciplined and great at backchecking. One more cup for Marty at age forty? Will Quick be quick? Will Kopitar be quick? Will Darrel Sutter maintain his team like he used to with the Islanders with discipline and class?

A long series I think... hope. Neither team excels at everything, although my knowledge of them is limited so I could be off base. I just wanna see some good hockey, no chippy shit, and good standoff reffing but what I REALLY want and WILL GET!!!! is that ALL of the games start at 9PM my local time.

GO... gee... I really dunno yet. Ahhh... GO HABS NEXT YEAR! fer now eh?

Gnu, I can't pick a favorite. I like both because before the playoff started I bet there is no one that had these two teams in the finals. What a year for playoff upsets. Here is some breaking news that I will be watching as it develops.

"Sources tell TSN that Nicklas Lidstrom is ready to call it a career. The Red Wings have scheduled a news conference for Thursday in Detroit where the 42-year-old defenseman will announce his retirement."

My brother just told me that his daughter, a recent college graduate and employee for the Kings for a couple of years now (started as an internship, worked into a steady job) is still working for them while the playoffs are underway. Apparently employees, and not just players, receive the playoff rings, so she could start her new job after all of this with a diploma from a fancy college, magna cum laude standing, and a NHL playoff ring. Wow! What a way to start a career in sports management!

I don't watch much in the way of sports and it seems this is only on cable. I hope those of you who want to watch it are able to. I would probably only be scanning the stands for my brother and niece (something I can't do on the radio!) :-)

i can't get excited about a final with out a canadian team or at least an origional six team, just an old guy's bias. however doughty is a great player and showing it. he's still way younger than most defensemen when they make thier mark as among the best. he had an off regular season but he's more than making up for it in the playoffs.

i have long liked brodeur and would love to see him get a fianly cup as his retirement party, but it looks like it's not going to happen. the kings top six are all playing at their best and their bottom six are eyeopeners. jarrod stoll is going to get a better free agent deal than he expected from his playoff performance. so is penner.

now maybe the leafs will tyrade for a decent goalie--bernier comes to mnind.

i remain disapointed that the canucks blew it . they had all the horses and could have brought the cup to canada again but they seem to lack the heart.

althoug i;m an old canadiens fan i may have to root for ottawa the next few years if i hope to see a canadian cup. they have such good young players and three or four more will be there this ear led by zibinijad and sliverberg, if thier veterns give good value they will be a contenter next year.

but above all i am impressed by drew doughty, and he;s still under 24! he was fabulous at the olympics and he's been faboulous this playoff run. he the new defense superstar

I collected SOME money but I went double or nothing for the next game on most of the bets. Fools. Don't they KNOW? Money talks... Kings in six, at home. Unless there is a LOT of coin on the table and it would have to be a LOTTA SHITLOADA coin for the Devils to win game six.

Cynical? Shrewd?

Yup.

Sorry to bring the room down but it's the truth.

However, the truth is that the next game(s?) will be decided by the players and not by the moneymen.

The games will be REAL hockey and not about money. Ya can get the lads ta put on a show up to a POINT. Then, it's gotta be about the cup and the ring. Money don't matter no more.

I am kinda sorry I posted all that above. It may piss off some fans who post herein but it's the way I see things. Over and over. In all pro sports. Otherwise, I wouldn't be rollin in the dough. And... I'm in the moneyyyyy >;-)

I was talking to an old buddy of mine this AM, JtS. Fightin' Irish Bob Harvey. His career ended in Boston... the crowd booed for over five minutes and it was a Boston lad he fought. My old man resigned his postion on the boxing commission here when he saw fixing going on. I gave up watching boxing years ago and it wasn't just because of the violence.

Come to think of it, the fighting was why I gave up watching hockey many years ago. Now, I wait for the playoffs because there is a lot less fighting and dirty play.

Due to the player's strike, there will be no hockey season this year. It's been cancelled. So, to our Canadian viewers: I'm terribly sorry. And to our American viewers: your lives won't change at all.
