Subject: RE: BS: Google Doodle - interesting today.... From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Apr 12 - 05:59 AM The separatable fastener wasn't going much of anywhere until it was used by B.F.Goodrich in Akron on a new type of overshoe that made them quick and easier to put on one-handed. BFG named them Zippers becasue of that and they were a runaway bestseller. Even when I was growing up the style of rubber boot was still called "Zips." Todya the Zips name carries on as the team name for the University of Akron.....The Zips! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Google Doodle - interesting today.... From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 Apr 12 - 06:15 AM Friend of mine worked for Firestone in Brentford UK. They had a wonderful spoof of the Lord's Prayer going round the office, which I can only remember the start of. Our Father who art in Akron Harvey be thy name. At that time the company president was called Harvey Firestone, I believe. |
Subject: RE: BS: Google Doodle - interesting today.... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 24 Apr 12 - 10:53 AM The zipper is a great example of how the success of a technological innovation can be spurred by coining a simple, catchy and appropriate name for it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Google Doodle - interesting today.... From: Bill D Date: 24 Apr 12 - 11:15 AM For those of a technical inclination, you oughta see the **source code** for that zipper trick! Hit 'ctrl-U' and be amazed! |
Subject: RE: BS: Google Doodle - interesting today.... From: mayomick Date: 24 Apr 12 - 11:56 AM Very clever. I had thought it was a thermometer up until reading this thread This side of the Atlantic we still just say "zip", which sounds more onomatopoeic than "zipper". I suppose you say "zipper" in the US to avoid confusion with the "zip" in your zip codes. No I didn't mean for you to pull your pants down, Hortense; I just wanted to get your address right. |

Subject: RE: BS: Google Doodle - interesting today.... From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Sep 12 - 01:47 AM geek.com announces that the Google Doodle for Friday and Saturday honors Star Trek and its 46th anniversary. It will be at google.com through Saturday. Afterwards, you can see it at the Google Doodle Archive Apparently, the doodles in the Google Doodle Archive are not animated, which is a shame. I started this thread in April to point out the Doodle for Gideon Sundback's 132nd Birthday. Sundback invented the zipper, so the Doodle was an animated zipper. Alas, it is animated no more. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Google Doodle - interesting today.... From: GUEST,Ed Date: 08 Sep 12 - 02:46 AM A few of them are still animated. Not Gideon Sundback's though. |
