Subject: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: Bert Date: 03 May 12 - 12:14 AM We just finished enjoying the TV series Terriers. FOX cancelled the show because they didn't get enough viewers in the 18-49 age group. I call on everyone who is fifty or over to boycott FOX for their age discrimination. |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: Rapparee Date: 03 May 12 - 12:20 AM Good Lord, I don't watch very much television at all and certainly not Fox! |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: GUEST,David E. Date: 03 May 12 - 12:45 AM 18 to 49? I would think from what little television that I see that the desired demographic is more like 15 to 25. |

Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 03 May 12 - 04:38 AM Bert, anyone over, say, fifty is completely invisible! Female programme presenters for example must be about 25, attractive and vibrant. There is an excellent Historian on UK TV called Mary Beard. She is 'of a certain age' and although perfectly pleasant to look at, not particularly 'sexy' or chic. You wouldn't believe the fracas people have caused by totally ignoring her wonderful knowledge and accessible presentation of Roman life in Britain, only to grumble that her hair is unstyled and grey (!) and she wears no make-up. There are numerous adverts which state that wrinkles are to be abhorred and removed if at all possible. We have conquered sexism to a great extent, but ageism is rife. We older ones are not of any value apparently, as viewers or presenters. It makes me furious, as I detest any form of discrimination. |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: Richard Bridge Date: 03 May 12 - 05:20 AM Surely anyone with an IQ of over 50 doesn't watch Fox anyway. |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: kendall Date: 03 May 12 - 07:12 AM You took the words right out of my mouth. |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: Midchuck Date: 03 May 12 - 07:30 AM People over 50 - a lot of us, anyway - have an unfortunate tendency to purchase only things that they really need, or that they have decided for themselves, after thinking about the matter, that they really want. Instead of buying whatever the TV commercial tells them they have to buy right now or they'll be miserable and no one will like them. This makes them, i. e. us, useless as a target audience for television advertisers, and therefore, for television programmers. Logical enough. Peter |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: JohnInKansas Date: 03 May 12 - 08:22 AM Even though there is a US Federal Regulation prohibiting descrimination based on age, it is the only form of discrimination prohibited by Federal laws for which the law limits compensation to "actual loss." For discrimination based on sex, the regulations specifically permit "treble punitive damages," in addition to attorney fees. All other forms of discrimination permit "punitive damages," with varying limits specified. For discrimination based on age you have to prove a specific amount the discrimination has cost you, and are not permitted to file suit based on the federal regulations for anything in excess of that amount. So who pays your attorney if they dump you 'cause you're just old? (It does make it really tough to even get an attorney to discuss whether you might have a case, and impossible to get one to take an individual case. The only possibility is if you can generate a very large class action.) John |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 03 May 12 - 12:44 PM I feel angry when it's suggested in adverts etc that ageing is bad and should be reversed if possible. Greying hair, wrinkles, saggy face and so on are looked on as dreadful. One is urged to do something about it with hair colourant, expensive creams, Botox or even plastic surgery. Everybody ages, and who is to say at which age one is most attractive? If one substitutes eg black skin, african hair etc as undesirable, one would be hauled up for racism (and quite rightly) But older people have no redress. It doesn't cause loss of earnings but it's still discriminatory and insulting. |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: GUEST,999 Date: 03 May 12 - 12:57 PM I am way past 49. But there's still some teenager in me. Fuck FOX. |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 May 12 - 01:20 PM I wonder how many people actually watch television any more. A few months ago, one the main broadcasting stations (I think ABC) shot some footage of me singing in church. I'm told it was on the nine o'clock news. You wanna know how many people have said they saw me? 2 I haven't even seen it myself. |

Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: GUEST,josepp Date: 03 May 12 - 01:48 PM I still have my TV set from the early 90s. I'll upgrade when it breaks down but not until. The only Fox I watch is Foxsports because I am a sports nut. There's this internet cafe I go a lot where the owners are an older couple. Mid-60s. The wife is slender with long blonde hair going gray. She wears two strands of it in braids and lets the rest flow free. Blue-gray eyes, long, sharpish nose. Sweet, little voice. I think she's utterly gorgeous. I mean, she's hot. I'd boff her if she wasn't married. Sometimes she catches me sneaking glances at her but I don't care. She likes it. But in this society, she's just an old woman, an old prune who needs to dye her hair. It's impossible to grow old gracefully in this society because we don't allow it. It's seen as a weakness. |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: SINSULL Date: 03 May 12 - 01:49 PM Is this it? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terriers_(TV_series) If so FX not Fox cancelled it after one season. |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: SINSULL Date: 03 May 12 - 01:53 PM FX is Fox's cable network? Still it was cancelled in 2010. |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: Bert Date: 03 May 12 - 02:06 PM We watched the one season on Netflix and were quite surprised when FOX 21 appeared on the screen. It was quite a good show. We pretty much only watch Netflix now as we can choose what we want. I filed a complaint with the FCC here, and suggested that they pull FOX's license. If you don't believe in age discrimination you can do the same. It is a simple fill in the blanks form. Please don't get too pompous about not watching Television, but Tree has been bedridden for the past few months and she has just about re-read every book in the house. The TV relaxes her and she can fall asleep with it on. |

Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: meself Date: 03 May 12 - 03:01 PM Back to this American law against age discrimination: if a younger woman tells me I'm too old for her, can I take her to court? |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: SINSULL Date: 03 May 12 - 03:15 PM Yes but make sure she is older than 16 or you could be in serious trouble. |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: GUEST, Lighter Date: 03 May 12 - 05:07 PM >Female programme presenters for example must be about 25, attractive and vibrant. No longer true on CNN in the US, though "vibrancy" still counts. |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: Rapparee Date: 03 May 12 - 05:23 PM I think it's called "perky." |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: GUEST,Stim Date: 03 May 12 - 05:43 PM And tell me, how is this age discrimination, in anyway? They canceled a show because not enough people were watching it. Why does it matter how old the people who weren't watching it were? And they did canceled it two years ago, which is why you were able to watch it on Netflix. Mostly though, FX is a cable channel, and cable channels are not regulated by the FCC, (which is why we get to see naked people on HBO). So just pick something else on Netflix, and let me watch "The Simpsons" in peace:-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: katlaughing Date: 03 May 12 - 06:01 PM Bert, sorry to hear about Tree. I hope she will better, up and able, soon. Please give her my best. We watch a lot of netflix. Haven't had the tv on in months. I think I got my fill of it when I was bedridden too much.:-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Fifty or over - boycott FOX From: JohnInKansas Date: 03 May 12 - 06:25 PM meself - if a younger woman tells me I'm too old for her, can I take her to court? Yes, but under Federal (US) law the only "harm" you can claim is actual loss of income so your case would be quite useless unless you derive significant earnings from sleeping with women (or others). The requirement that you prove your losses would likely necessitate identifying at least some of the others you've slept with, who paid you for the service, and almost certainly at least one of that horde would sue you for some minor damage to their reputation under other (libel?) laws. (And in most places proving that you were paid would subject you to criminal prosecution under local laws.) It would seem rather dangerous in your case. I'd recommend you just accept the loss in income and concentrate on the more beautiful mature women, since they're certainly plentiful enough. But that's just a friendly suggestion since IANAL.
