Happy Mother's Day to all mothers, children of mothers, and to *all* women, who are all really mothers in their own way.

I just finished a Mom's Day breakfast for Karen and she spent yesterday working her plants with the full day of digging, toting, mulching, and yard clean-up given to her for Mother's Day by son Michael (who just got a full time job). Since she's having a bit of back surgery the end of the month, this was a valuable service......and looking back where Michael once was, seeing them have a truly caring relationship is a gift to me as well. Karen is now napping to the sound of the rain after going to the movies last night with son Tristan.

So a bit about my Mom..............

Her name was Margie....possibly the stongest minded woman I ever knew. She was always ready for a good time or an argument and with her I had both. She corresponded with well known people in a variety of fields and was herself a world class pianist, although she never let you know that. Anyone listening to her with any training at all knew it though.

She could push me harder and farther and into thinking patterns and thoughts that I didn't think were possible. She challenged virtually every thought I had during the short time I knew her and would make me back down if I couldn't debate it with her successfully. When I did, she gave way with good grace. She was known to be alternately both a serious minded woman and a complete "character." Her practical jokes were legendary among her many friends.

Mainly though, she exuded a love and a spirit and a zest for living I have rarely encountered in anyone else. She loved her husband, her son, her parents, her friends, and life in general, with unadulterated passion and she made those around her want to share in the passion as well. She fought a serious cancer for almost 4 years and when visitors came to see her, they were the ones who walked away feeling better! Her son came to see her in the hospital the weekend before she died and she gave him a nasty lecture on missing days in college to come home. When he left she told him, as she told all, "I'll be okay again in a few days....This is just a little setback."

Sniff... yer lucky, Spaw.

I did the usual. Card, roses, fresh lobster scoff... but what made MY day was when she came outside just after I finished washing her windows. She neared the hummingbird feeders, pointed at them with her cane and said, "I don't suppose we'll see any hummers for a while yet." A flash caught my eye and I told her not to move but to look at the feeder. One had come out of the apple tree and came close but was hesitant. It flew up and over me, made a circle over the garage and went back in the tree. I told Mum to come to me. And The King Of Birds came to the feeders. What a Mother's Day present!

Well, my mom's name is Ruth... She's 92 now, blind in one eye, 20/20 in the other with a 20/20 mind... When I was real young she would take me on the street car into Washington, D.C. and drag me thru one art gallery after another... By the time I was six I knew more about art than most adults...

Her other interest was social change and she was a purdy feisty commie mommie in the 60s and 70s... We had a little competition going on how many demonstrations & arrests we were involved in... She won them both...

Talked with her this morning on the phone and she's looking forward to watching a movie with her girlfriends down in Venice, Fl. where she lives independently in her own condo...

BTW, Spawz... Loved hearing about your mom... Musts have been a blast to be her son...

B~

Judy and I took my 94 year old mother out for lunch at The Taste of Maine, a fine seafood restaurant overlooking a coastal marsh. They also have a live Osprey Webcam cabled to their lobby area for people to view their resident nest while they're waiting for tables. We had reserved ours, which given the day was a wise decision. We had a round of fresh lobster rolls, washed down with wine. It was just another leisurely lunch with lots of idle chatter.

I'm sitting at the dining room table at Grandma's, having made the trek down for the first time since November. Mum's upstairs at the moment making one of her multi-media pieces of art and listening to what sound like some pretty good blues and Gramma's out on the porch having an evening snack. I made their day by coming down. I really should do it more.

Many 'catters are familiar with the troubles my mum was having a few years back. She's doing fine and the happiest she's been in a while.

My gramma's a pretty special lady, too. She raised me from 18 months to five years when my mum was going through her wild phase. She believed in the gentle touch when it came to child-rearing, and although her kids did get up to some shenanigans, they all turned out all right. And I like to think I have, too.

My Mom's name was Edna; Nana Sullivan was born Mathilda Fisher. There were many great ladies in my childhood - Aunt May, Aunt Jen, Aunt Pat, Cousin Anne Marie - I have been luckier than most when it came to strong women who loved me.
Happy Mother's Day all.

Damn Hallmark holiday, though it has become.

Hallmark holiday it may be, but my heart still did flip flops when the phone rang twice this afternoon. Both of my kids called to wish me a good day.

My mom never made much of a deal about Mothers Day but I called her today anyway. Shr's 85 and still going strong, and I am grateful every day that she's still feisty, fun and relatively healthy.

My mother died in 1981. We still miss her.

In 1944 she married a sergeant in the US Army. He got her pregnant and then shipped out to the South Pacific. When he came back they had three more kids (but I got all the first-class genes!) and in 1950 he was killed on a construction site.

She raised all four kids, saw all four graduate from college and one get a Master's degree, and then took some college classes herself. There was ALWAYS money somehow for education, be it from grants, loans, or working various jobs.

In 1968 all three sons were on active military duty within 24 hours of each other, two in the Army and one in the Air Force. All three came home; she expected them to be changed and they were. She expected this because her husband, two brothers, and three brothers-in-law had been in WW2 and she saw the changes war wrought.

When she died she had two grandsons, were she still alive she'd have nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She'd also be 98 years old.

As my late brother Ted used to say, "Happy day, all you muthas out there."

Whether you are a mother or not, I hope you had a wonderful day.
It's not just about greeting cards. Here's Julia Ward Howe's 1870 Mother's Day Proclamation which was about peace and disarmament. http://www.wagingpeace.org/articles/0000/1870_howe_mothers-day.htm
