New York Times obit.

Robin Gibb, a Bee Gee With a Taciturn Manner, Dies at 62

Robin Gibb, one of the three singing brothers of the Bee Gees, the long-running Anglo-Australian pop group whose chirping falsettos and hook-laden disco hits like "Jive Talkin" and "You Should Be Dancing" shot them to worldwide fame in the 1970s, died on Sunday in London. He was 62 and lived in Thame, Oxfordshire, England.

The cause was complications of cancer and intestinal surgery, his family said in a statement.

Mr. Gibb had been hospitalized for intestinal problems several times in the last two years. Cancer had spread from his colon to his liver, and in the days before his death he contracted pneumonia and fell into a coma.

Mr. Gibb was the second Bee Gee and third Gibb brother to die. His fraternal twin and fellow Bee Gee, Maurice Gibb, died of complications of a twisted intestine in 2003 at 53. The youngest brother, Andy, who had a successful solo career, was 30 when he died of heart failure, in 1988.

See the rest at the link.

Sad days these what with the passing of Donna Summer, D.C.'s Chuck Brown and now Robin Gibb.

Funny, from my perspective the Bee Gee's best was/is 'To Love Somebody' which hasn't been mentioned in any of the articles I've read.

Think I'll pop over to Youtube and have my own memorial. RIP, Robin you were one of the greats.

He fought for one hell of a long time.
The music he created is part of our shared consciousness, and we'll remember the music.

Sad news.

I grew up in Pawtucket, RI. The next town to the north of Pawtucket is South Attleboro, Massachusetts. So every time I think of the Bee Gees, I think of their song "Massachusetts."

Jeri, thanks for the link. What a poignant song, esp. in these circumstances. The BeeGees will always be a part of my memories. So sad they are all gone so young.

Can't help but think about Barry and wonder how he must feel......the oldest and the last. Their pre-Disco stuff is what I loved and like Grover up there, "To Love Somebody" was a favorite of mine too. Disco gave them a new start and they followed that by introducing a new generation to The Beatles.....That's a whole lot for any career!

Thanks to them all for so much...........

Ah, this is sad. I loved every incarnation of the Beegees, but most of all, I loved the ballady 60s version, and of course, especially Robin's voice. And yes, 62 is absolutely nowt these days, far far too young.

RIP Robin.

Col Joye remembers the night he discovered the Bee Gees (audio) Col Joye remembers the night he discovered the Bee Gees Col Joye first met the Gibb brothers at a BBQ in the Gold Coast when they were just 13 and 14 years old. He knew immediately that he'd discovered something very special.

"I was just knocked out with the sound that they had so I recorded them the next day," he told Richard Glover of the experience.

Yeah, it's a shame our 'news' media too often seem to mention only the disco stuff when they write about the BeeGees.    Their music was much more eclectic than that (though I enjoy a lot of their Saturday Night Fever soundtrack songs greatly), and they were all very talented, not just as performers and recording artists but as songwriters too.

(I noticed that, while the mainstream news media seem so often to describe non-famous people in their early sixties as "elderly," they were quick to acknowledge that Robin Gibb was "just 62" at the time of his death.    Yes, 62 is way too young.

A loss to the World of Music & a loss to the World. It's so sad that he was not well enough to hear the world premi쳌re of his new work The Titanic Requiem, a collaboration with his son. And how ironic this final work was a requiem. My condolences to Robin's Family & Friends,

He's with Maurice now, who, I've no doubt has been all around Robin these past months/years. And I bet Robin felt so relieved to finally be back with the twin brother he loved SO dearly that he hadn't ever been able to think of as having 'died', merely having 'gone away on holiday' for a while..

Yes, Barry must be gutted, but so must their Mum, for at 92 she's now outlived three of her four sons, and hell, that must be just awful to endure...

Cliff Richard stated yesterday that the music of the Bee Gees was on a par with The Beatles, and I totally agree with him. I always felt they were undervalued in this country, where so much 'fun' was made of them, for 'fun' read bitchy, nastiness....

They were supremely talented..and I'd imagine that right now, Barry is aching inside, in every place it is possible to ache...

Thanks, lads, for all your beautiful music..

I cannot believe Robin Gibb has passed away. He was a great entertainer and will be dearly missed. This article is a nice tribute to the Bee Gees accomplishments.

Barry's moving and beautiful tribute to his brother, which he's not long put out on Youtube.

He must be so heartbroken..
