Yes, the long memory is the most radical idea in this country. It is the loss of that long memory which deprives our people of that connective flow of thoughts and events that clarifies our vision, not of where we're going, but where we want to go. - Utah Phillips

The trouble is that each one of us is guilty of polluting the earth unless we live in a primitive way such as that of the Aborigines and native Americans before 'civilisation' arrived. I've heard it said that the Aborigine peoples claim (justifiably) that they dwelt in Australia for hundreds of millennia and left the land exactly as they found it. Unless you can honestly state you don't drive a car, don't use electricity, don't eat anything but what you yourself grow or catch etc etc, then you're one of the 'people who have addresses.' I know I'm as guilty as anyone. Sadly I feel it's gone too far now to recoup and the earth is heading for total meltdown.

He said I've the baddies addresses
You won't need three guesses
You can store them all on your computer

Yes, Eliza, I agree, but . . . there's a difference. There are those who are aware of the problem and are working to fix it, and those who deny and/or don't care, making it worse with their greed and/or self-absorption. I drive a car because my fellow citizens won't build a mass-transit system. I can't really live in the society in which I find myself without driving a car. Our economy is so screwed up that I can't afford to live in the same city in which I work.

The people who are actively destroying the earth are the ones who earn huge profits from this activity, and who spend part of their huge profits making sure it remains legal for them to do so. Well, them and their bought-and-paid-for politicians.

Of all the problems we have on this earth, the most serious one is over population. Mother earth can no longer feed all of us. So, what does our government do? it subsidizes the corn farmers while they make a fuel additive and drive up the cost of food!

The worst flaw we have? GREED!

"There is enough for everyone's needs; there is not enough for everyone's wants." (M.Gandhi)

I don't want to sound like an old lady who dwells on the past (which I'm afraid I am!) but we lived in the forties and fifties without ever even seeing a car down our street. We cycled or walked everywhere. We grew tons of our own produce on my dad's allotment and plastic hadn't been invented, neither plastic bags, plastic wrappings, plastic anything. I would say our 'carbon footprint' was very small. There is actually no reason at all why I can't go on living like that, except sheer laziness and, yes, greed. I love my little car, I love travel in aeroplanes, I adore the convenience of supermarkets. At least I can say I haven't contributed to the population explosion as I have no children!

As the proverb says" "Take what you want," said God. "Take it and pay for it."

Can't go back, Eliza. And, as you say, no-one really wants to, we all like it too much. Not going to concern me much longer at my time of life; and I have left no next generation to worry about either. I console myself, when I think on these things, with the consideration that people have been a-doomin'n'a-gloomin' about the way the world has been wagging since time immemorial; but the old dear just goes on -a-turnin' somehow...

It's true MtheGM, and it's no good getting depressed at our time of life! The best thing we can do for the world is to enjoy it and love it and then move on to the next life with a smile.
