The lyrics, with a melody in standard notation, are in my treasured "Song Fest" from 1959. I might try a scan of the page, if necessary.

Peter.

Jimmy Dean made a popular recording of this song, although he didn't write it. I believe it was the flip side of his 45 rpm recording of "Big John".

Okay, Kendall -

No need to take any road to Portland, they already got one there.

It was the back side of "Big Bad John". That was one of my first favorite country records; back when country used to sneak on the pop charts. Songs like "Wolvertine Mountain", "The Race is On" (Jack Jones covering George Jones), "I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry" (Hank Williams covered by BJ Thomas), "The Battle of New Orleans" & "North to Alaska" (Johnny Horton) and "Abilene" (written by the late great Bob Gibson)all found there way to the rock and roll radio before play lists became so da*ned programmed and predictable and boring. You could here the "real versions" on WJJD here in Chicago, but you risked being called a "hillbilly". It was well worth it.

Without looking, I'd bet that a boatload of folks have recorded it. I remember Grandpa Jones and Stringbean doing it together once on Hee-Haw.

I know that I have a 45 at home with this song on it sung by Jimmie Dean the sausage king. It was probably on the back of "PT109" or "Big Bad John".

Subject: Lyr Add: I WON'T GO HUNTING WITH YOU JAKE^^
From: kendall

I WON'T GO HUNTING WITH YOU JAKE

It's springtime in the mountains and I'm full of mountain dew
Cant even read my catalog like I used to do
I'm settin' in that little shed thats right back of the house
Here comes Jake with all his hounds
And he's gonna hear me shout
"I wont go hunting with you Jake but, I'll go chasing women
So, put the hounds back in the pen and quit your silly grinnin'
The moon is right and I'm half tight,
My life is just beginning
I wont go hunting with you Jake, but, I'll go chasing women"

Let's go down to the meetin' house and wait til they start home
Them gals that come from Possum Crick will always leave alone
We'll run them down the corn rows them sassy little misses
We'll scare them purty gals to death
We'll stop and throw them kisses."

chorus

So, wash your face and comb your hair
It's time for us to start
But, let me tell you 'fore we go
There's one thats got my heart
Dont chase the one with the yellow hair
Wearin' the dress of green
That little gal belongs to me
I know she's past 16.

chorus

I went to town the other day and look at what I seen
They make them in the city, it's called a magazine
I turned to page 32, and look at what I found
Them gals wear clothes that we aint seen
Beneath them gingham gowns

chorus^^

Its the old gunfighter's nightmare again: There's always someone who is quicker on the draw! Thanks, Gene!

Here is a little story about Mr. Stuart Hamblen.

I can't swear to the authenticity of this story because of what may be a faulty memory. But here is the gist of what I recall (my apologies to Mr. Hamblen, if I have the story wrong, but it is a good story which I think I heard on the Paul Harvey radio show). Stuart Hamblen lived a bit of the life he sang about in this song. He chased around quite a bit and drank a lot more than many thought he should. At about three o'clock one morning after having had far too much to drink, he found himself on the doorstep of a friend of his. He managed to knock on the door. His friend answered the knock and welcomed Stuart inside. The friend made some coffee and sat and talked with Stuart. Stuart said that he didn't like himself very much. He didn't like the life he was leading anymore and wanted to make a change. He and his friend talked until dawn. Somewhere in that time Stuart began a new life as a Christian. He later wrote some hymns that some of us might know and recognize: "Open Up Your Heart (and Let the Sunshine In)" "It Is No Secret (What God Can Do)" --Oh, the friend's name was Billy Graham.

Disclaimer: I offer this story only as background on this composer and not for any other purpose.

More information about Stuart Hamblen can be found here

Is this "Chasin' Women" you're looking for?

I won't go huntin' with you, Jake, but I'll go chasin' women,
So put them hounds back in their pen and stop that silly grinnin'.
The moon is bright and I'm half-tight and life is just beginnin'...
So I won't go huntin' with you, Jake, but I'll go chasin' women.

You might have better luck searching for it under that title (not in the Digitrad, unfortunately: the request for "chasin' women" turns up a title only: no link to lyrics or other data. The song, with tune and chords, is in the book Song Fest. --seed

I suspect that it is older, but the first (and to date only) version that I have heard was by Jimmy Dean on his Big Bad John album, early 60s. Stuart Hamblen song?
