Subject: RE: Tune Req: who sang 'I wont go hunting with Ja From: GUEST,Rob Date: 09 May 08 - 07:30 AM Jimmy Dean made a popular recording of this song, although he didn't write it. I believe it was the flip side of his 45 rpm recording of "Big John". |

No need to take any road to Portland, they already got one there. Giac, a transplanted Arkansawyer |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Won't go hunting with you Jake From: Jim the Bart Date: 07 Aug 00 - 05:57 PM It was the back side of "Big Bad John". That was one of my first favorite country records; back when country used to sneak on the pop charts. Songs like "Wolvertine Mountain", "The Race is On" (Jack Jones covering George Jones), "I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry" (Hank Williams covered by BJ Thomas), "The Battle of New Orleans" & "North to Alaska" (Johnny Horton) and "Abilene" (written by the late great Bob Gibson)all found there way to the rock and roll radio before play lists became so da*ned programmed and predictable and boring. You could here the "real versions" on WJJD here in Chicago, but you risked being called a "hillbilly". It was well worth it. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: who sang 'I wont go hunting with Ja From: Allan C. Date: 17 Oct 99 - 08:31 PM Its the old gunfighter's nightmare again: There's always someone who is quicker on the draw! Thanks, Gene! Here is a little story about Mr. Stuart Hamblen. I can't swear to the authenticity of this story because of what may be a faulty memory. But here is the gist of what I recall (my apologies to Mr. Hamblen, if I have the story wrong, but it is a good story which I think I heard on the Paul Harvey radio show). Stuart Hamblen lived a bit of the life he sang about in this song. He chased around quite a bit and drank a lot more than many thought he should. At about three o'clock one morning after having had far too much to drink, he found himself on the doorstep of a friend of his. He managed to knock on the door. His friend answered the knock and welcomed Stuart inside. The friend made some coffee and sat and talked with Stuart. Stuart said that he didn't like himself very much. He didn't like the life he was leading anymore and wanted to make a change. He and his friend talked until dawn. Somewhere in that time Stuart began a new life as a Christian. He later wrote some hymns that some of us might know and recognize: "Open Up Your Heart (and Let the Sunshine In)" "It Is No Secret (What God Can Do)" --Oh, the friend's name was Billy Graham. Disclaimer: I offer this story only as background on this composer and not for any other purpose. More information about Stuart Hamblen can be found here |

I won't go huntin' with you, Jake, but I'll go chasin' women, You might have better luck searching for it under that title (not in the Digitrad, unfortunately: the request for "chasin' women" turns up a title only: no link to lyrics or other data. The song, with tune and chords, is in the book Song Fest. --seed |
