Hi all. After six beautiful years on Orkney Mrs Viking and I are off to the mainland again. We would have preferred to stay on Orkney, one of the most beautiful places you can imagine, but have to leave for medical reasons. There is something truly magical about these islands and if you get the chance visit them at least. We are sad to leave our adopted island home but needs must. But there are new adventures to be had. Just thought some of you might be interested. We are staying near the sea though where we can see dolphins on a regular basis. There are preserved railways and good music nearby.

How far South are you going Eric? Will it be back to Yorkshire or just onto the mainland. Let me know when you leave. Regards to Dawn.
Bill

Edmund and I went to Orkney several years ago for the festival and the Neolithic remains, and it was a truly magical experience. I remember, however, that the pharmacy in Stromness had only penicillin to offer when I came down with bronchitis, and the fancy big-city antibiotic I was used to was simply not available. I guess things could get really nasty for an Orcadian who needed the services of a major trauma centre or complex long-term treatment such as dialysis or chemotherapy. Especially if the weather is unco-operative, as is often the case.

We have helicopters for that Charmian. They whisk them off to Raigmore hospital in Inverness. Anywho, Orcadians are hardy fowk, an tend to take an aspirin for a broken leg. Then go back out in the howling gales herding seals.
As a BTW, I am always totally amazed at the proliferation of antibiotics and painkillers there seem to be across the pond. Most of them have names I never heard of, but I ready to bet that many of them are the same thing under the coating. That's one of the drawbacks of privatised medicine. Change the name, up the price, maximise the profits. yes I know you have a good health service in Canada, I'm thinking more of south of the 49th.

John... "good health service in Canada" does not cover the cost of prescription drugs. Only free if you are IN a hospital.

So do tell, John. Are you coming to expand the resident mudcatter community in Whitby or have a few of us guessed incorrectly?

Ooops, where the heck did that 'John' come from? The question was really meant for Eric, sorry.

(Sanity here is optional, and many choose to opt out)

(In)Sanity is far from a simple mistake. Let he who is without mistakes cast the first of MANY.

Nay, I'm in Moray by the Spey (With Mrs Viking). Looking forward to going to Lossiemouth folk club. I never knew Sorcha was in Kirkwall, she could have come for tea in the Hope.Actually John, the helicopters whisk people awa to Aberdeen. That's where I would have had to go as I have kidney disease (Polycystic kidney) with about 18% function at the moment and the things that go along with it. But life is good and we are happy as ever. There are so many worse things for people.

Good to hear from you Eric, sending positive wishes to your kidneys and the rest of you and yours :) :)

Is the bonny Earl still living in those parts?

And Peter, will we see you and/or Sorcha at Warwick this year? Send her all the best from the gang, who miss her!

Eric:

I've got some old maps and photos of that area from when my parents lived in Kingston-on-Spey.

Would you be interested, or could you find a local history society or something for them.

I was about to bin them, but I hate doing that for things that might be of interest to someone. They mostly fit in a postal tube.

Wolfhound. Thankyou. I am sure the local history society would be interested. It's a thriving area with a lot of local interest. If you pm me, I'll send details.

John... I won't be there, but when you see KAN have a great time. A band to watch out for, "Login's Well"...superb musicianship. I shall go to "Speyfest" this year.

Well Orkney Folk Festival was a blast as usual. Went to see Edi Reader on the Friday night, wonderful show. Had a session or two Saturday.
Met up with Hamish Bayne on Saturday evening, and we had a great sassion in his house. Sunday was quieter for me, as I may have been feeling a tad delicate, but we went out for a lovely meal in the Merkister Hotel in the evening, most enjoyable.
Thanks to all involved, and a special thanks to my wonderful hostess MeganL.
Cheers lassie!
