Subject: RE: BS: ' I heared that' & other.... From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 29 May 12 - 10:10 AM Of course it's Hay-tie, Rap. It comes from Hayes' tie, a railroad connection. Take it from a former member of the Missouri Folklore Society. So, you say Missour-ah, eh? Dave Barry has explained that the Missouri Compromise was that half the people would say Missouri-ah and half would say Missour-ee. I'm of the Missour-ee persusion myself. |

Subject: RE: BS: ' I heared that' & other.... From: Arkie Date: 29 May 12 - 12:07 PM I suppose all who pick up this thread know this, but I'll say it anyway, many of the expressions we now find quaint or unusual are hold overs from earlier times and many have passed through many generations. The language used here in Stone County, Arkansas has changed quite a bit, "a wee toady bit" in the last forty years since I have been here. Due in part to radio and television, and to paved roads. People have always wanted to get out so gravel roads and one lane paths only limited them a bit, but people have not always wanted to get in. The paving helped in that regard. I enjoy reading Patrick Taylor and Sharyn McCrumb for several reasons but the language of their characters is of interest. |

Subject: RE: BS: ' I heared that' & other.... From: Mooh Date: 31 May 12 - 01:10 PM The discussion of "yous" (the plural of you) got me some heat here a few years ago when I commented on it in a thread I started. Subject: RE: BS: ' I heared that' & other.... From: Don Firth Date: 31 May 12 - 07:34 PM For most of the first nine years of my life, I lived in Pasadena, California. People around there used to refer to Los Angeles (Spanish for "the angels"--!??) as "Loss ANG-luss." In fact, if YOU pronounced it correctly, some of the natives would look at you kinda funny! I've heard that more than a few Easterners think that "Seattle" (an Anglicization of the name of the chief of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes when the first settlers arrived; actually, his name is spelled "Sealth," but it's impossible to pronounce it correctly without chipping a tooth) is pronounced "SEE-tul." And "Puget (pronounced "PYU-jet) Sound" is sometimes referred to as "PUGG-it Sound." And the Strait of Juan de Fuca, up north of Seattle, is named after (fasten you seat belt, now) a Greek sea captain and explorer (Ioánnis Fokás) in the employ of Charles II of Spain, who modified his name to sound Spanish, and who thought he had discovered the Pacific outlet of the Northwest Passage before he sailed into the strait and found himself in Puget Sound. It's pronounced "Juan (Hwan) de FEW-cah." I won't go into how some folks from other parts attempt to pronounce it. . . . Don Firth |
