Thanks to everyone who came along on Sunday at the Sun where myself and Mr Chris 'Sensitive' Mullins hosted a splendid session which started slowly but grew and grew, really enjoyed it. Sorry you didn't make it Kampervan and Big Bird but i suppose Bird Bird having a little squawker does come first. Looking forward to seeing you at Shrewsbury, remember your Dinner Jacket cos we dress for dinner.

I like the Scott better than the Third Hand but you need to modify it in three ways: First you need rubber pads on the blocks to soften them (like the rubber sleeve does on a Shubb if you compare it to an old Hamilton Quick Action). I use old camping rubber loops from frame tents and cut them up and superglue them on. Second, the "nail" through the middle of the blocks is bent to allow for fret camber - but not enough. Patience, pliers, a vice, and a hammer help with that. Third, it's cunning in that if you twist the nail relative to the blocks, you can take the compensation out so as to use the Scott on a classical guitar with a flat fretboard - which does need a pair of pliers or really strong fingers - and then you need a marker on it to show you which way the bend goes - I file a shiny bit onto the nail head but there is probably a better way although I have not figured out what it is yet.

Kyser also make a partial capo.

Only the Shubb and the Kyser will let you get at the two adjacent unfretted strings - so if you put the capo on the second fret you can still with great care play a partially barred F# or F#m - the former being essential if you want to play "You can't always get what you want" round the D shape at the second fret (ie in E).

It goes nicely into A if you put a full capo at the 5th fret with the partial at the 7th. Stones did it in C.

Sounds like we missed a good weekend. Good to hear that the fringe is as good as ever.

Bigbird and I were planning to be there as usual and she spent most of last summer renovating her van ready for this year. Then her timing went all astray and she found herself about to give birth any time in the next few days.

Since its my first grandchild then I figured I'd best kick my heels at home in sunny Faversham.

However, I'll be up at Shrewsbury later this year and hopefully catch up with a few friends there.

Here's to 2013 in Beverley

Nick - I assume that you are the Nick to whom I spoke - you were playing a Tanglewood if so.

Yes, that couple was a definite "somebody" but I have forgotten who. Lots of people seemed to know who they were and I'm sure your answer will be along soon. He was playing a Martin D28 (I think) with three piece back and she had - now let me think - was it a button melodeon or was it a small piano accordion? They got better and better as Saturday wore on and were much more ebullient in the late afternoon Saturday in the Oddfellows.

There were also some other "somebodies" in the Oddfellows, apparently part of a long established posse - lots of tattoos and lots of drink, 2 men & 2 women but I didn't catch any names.

Someone could remind me who were the couple who sang in lovely harmonies in the window. Enjoyed them hugely (along with everyone else of course).

If anyone also knows who was the nice lady with the super voice from the NorthStarOpera who shared a couple of songs with me round about 5:45 - 6:00 on Saturday in the back room of the Tiger. Thank you it was great fun and I think the other people there rather enjoyed it too.

Who was the tall bloke with the cutaway Martin who did the Mary Ellen Carter in Hodgsons early-ish on Saturday? He was GOOD and it was the best cutaway Martin I've ever heard!

And the girl with the glasses singing seasongs along side (but not part of) She-Shanty. She was REALLY good. Who was she? I think she organised things in Sheffield.

It might be worth checking out the Hull indoor market for a drum like Lawrie's. There are some music stalls at the Lowgate end. I think one of them has some ethnic-style percussion.

The drum is called a Gandira, and it was me playing it. I got it donkey's years ago in the far off land of Princes Quay, top floor, where they had a shop selling ethnic stuff. It cost me all of £16, and it's good for sessions, since it's very strong and has good attack - you can hear it well, without it crushing everything else. The skin is vey thick - about3-4 mill - probably some damn wildebeest or camel or something. As you saw, I play it with my hand, not a tipper, and it's also good because it fits into the pocket of my guitar bag. I have absolutely no idea where you can get them from.
