It is named for the Irish tune Garryowen, anthem used by Custer's 7th Cavalry, and is the site of the Custer Battlefield Museum. |

Subject: RE: BS: The town of Garryowen is for sale From: Midchuck Date: 29 Jun 12 - 12:58 PM Been through it. Only in eastern Montana could it be defined as a "Town." P. |
Subject: RE: BS: The town of Garryowen is for sale From: Rapparee Date: 29 Jun 12 - 01:07 PM I think we should all chip in and give it to gnu. It's actually in a pretty nice area. |

Subject: RE: BS: The town of Garryowen is for sale From: Bobert Date: 29 Jun 12 - 05:17 PM Kim Bassinger bought a town once... She is now in bankruptcy... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: The town of Garryowen is for sale From: Lonesome EJ Date: 29 Jun 12 - 06:50 PM maybe Bassenger's town didn't have the raw tourist appeal of Sitting Bull (previously Garryowen), where the whole family can "Ride with the Seventh"! Where kids of all ages can be pinned down for hours on Reno's Ridgetop by a horde of screaming re-enactors, Mom can be captured and wed to an authentic Sioux Warrior, and Dad can go down with Custer within a constantly shrinking circle of wounded troopers! Plus, the whole clan will receive half-priced Subway Value Meals when the fracas has ended, and watch actors re-create an actual Pow Wow! |
Subject: RE: BS: The town of Garryowen is for sale From: gnu Date: 29 Jun 12 - 07:08 PM A Pow Wow? Why, Bobert would be on that like white on rice. What kinda smoke? Mexican Red Hair? Thai Stick? Acapella Gold (Yeah, I know)... no stems, no seeds that you don't need... I kinda miss smokin weed even tho it is a long ago memory. I might take it up again some day if the docs tell me I may as well. Hopefully, if they do, I'll be able to get a prescription for the cheap medical maryjane the gubmint sells and then grow my own good shit. |
Subject: RE: BS: The town of Garryowen is for sale From: Bobert Date: 29 Jun 12 - 07:31 PM Custer was a hard-head... B;~) |
Subject: RE: BS: The town of Garryowen is for sale From: gnu Date: 30 Jun 12 - 01:49 PM Custer was a mercenary. Maybe he believed what he was doing was honourable duty but history... well, I am no history expert so I'll leave that one alone. Odd... I found Mudcat when trying to find a recording of someone singing that song. Still haven't heard it. |
Subject: RE: BS: The town of Garryowen is for sale From: gnu Date: 30 Jun 12 - 02:03 PM Here's the thread. Gee. I have been wasting other people's time here for over 11 years. |
Subject: RE: BS: The town of Garryowen is for sale From: Lonesome EJ Date: 30 Jun 12 - 02:24 PM Custer was a rather complex individual. He testified in a case against suttlers licensed by the Federal Government who were selling bad food and defective poor quality supplies on the reservations, and he most likely had a native american mistress. He had more understanding of the ways of the plains tribes than most of his peers. But he had the job of attacking indians who had left the reservations, and gained a national reputation for it. He also developed a very effective method of defeating the tribes even when his troops were outnumbered, a combination of massed cavalrymen charging and dismounted troopers volley firing. This might have worked at Little bighorn except for the flooded state of the river at the base of Medicine Tail Coulee, which effectively halted the charge, along with Custer's mistaken assessment of the numbers of warriors. It was a great victory for the Sioux and Cheyenne, but provoked a national reaction that sealed the doom for the plains tribes' free life. The battlefield is still quite an eerie and unsettling place, and is worth a stop if you ever find yourself in Southeastern Montana. |

Subject: RE: BS: The town of Garryowen is for sale From: Rapparee Date: 30 Jun 12 - 10:38 PM I think most people today don't remember the song OR that it was associated with Custer. |

Subject: RE: BS: The town of Garryowen is for sale From: dick greenhaus Date: 30 Jun 12 - 11:20 PM GARRYOWEN Let Bacchus' sons be not dismayed But join with me, each jovial blade Come, drink and sing and lend your aid To help me with the chorus: cho: Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale And pay the reckoning on the nail; No man for debt shall go to jail From Garryowen in glory. We'll beat the bailiffs out of fun, We'll make the mayor and sheriffs run We are the boys no man dares dun If he regards a whole skin. Our hearts so stout have got no fame For soon 'tis known from whence we came Where'er we go they fear the name Of Garryowen in glory. Note: Official marching tune of Custer's Seventh Cavalry. Garryowen, or Owen's Garden, is a suburb of Limerick. @drink @Irish @gambler @fight filename[ GARYOWEN TUNE FILE: GARYOWEN CLICK TO PLAY RG |
