Now that I've just about finished staining my redwood fence, I've noticed that dry wood termites are eating it in a few places. What can I do to great rid of these infernal creatures?

I'd call an professional. You might very well have bigger problems than just your fence.

"Some primeal termite knocked on wood..
And tasted it, and found it good.
And that is why your cousin May
Fell thru the parlour floor today."

All we can do is watch and fight in areas we care about... the termites will be here long after we are gone.

Forget professionals... Go to yer local garden center and buy a bulb auger that attaches to an electric drill and drill one hole next to every post about 10 inches deep... Then go to your local hardware store and buy some malathion, mix according to directions, pour a half a cup in each hole and cover up...

Bye, bugs!!!

I'm not sure that will work for dry wood termites Bobert. It is the treatment we used for burrowing termites at our house.

Here is something I found on line.

Drywood termites are a real problem in the southwest and California.
The UC Davis notes are good.

I remember problems with them in New Mexico. Here is a report from the University of Arizona which adds to the material given by UC Davis:

Bobert, drywood termites have recently been found chawing away in southern counties of Alabama- maybe you already have them as well in the Carolinas but don't know it yet.

When termites take over the world--

"Southern counties of Alabama" are a lot closer to where I live in Florida than where you are in them Carolinas, Boberdz. I'm so close to the Florida/Alabama line that I can reach it with a good spit if the wind's from the south.

Keep out immigrant furniture!

Drywood termites have been found in North Carolina in infested furniture brought in from Florida, California, New Mexico, Texas, etc.

They are in the in North Carolina Bob. We had termite estimates done last year and all of the companies checked for them. That's how I knew they don't travel underground. But don't feel bad. They are not nearly the problem here as our native termites. But there is apparently an Asian termite that landed in New Orleans that is worse still.

We keep looking for signs. According to our termite guys they are easy enough to spot.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I've treated my house for termites three times in the last ten years, and now it looks like I have to do it again. I've had it with these damn creatures!

Goose Gander -

The termites have had a meeting and decided they've had it with you too. Since they believe they have the advantage, they've decided you will have to go. Unfortunately, there's no place for you to go to where their friends won't know you're coming.

(Unlike the UN, the WDA (Wood Destroyers Alliance) is internationally strong and effective. Their "logo" is a circle with "WJWEW" around the border - We Just Wanna Eat Wood; but since they have a little difficulty with spelling it's sometimes hard to read where they chew it into your stuff.)

Carpenter ants are the big bugaboo in southeast Alaska. There are even stories about the paint being the only thing holding a house up.

I note without commentary that the termite spray I used on the fence smells like whiskey.

Sometime after one of the big changes in EPA regulations, a former wife complained to the exterminator about "spiders" in the house.

On about the third trip out (she kept calling them) his pronouncement was:

"Lady, the EPA banned everything that will kill them. The best I can do with what I've got is get them drunk enough so they'll follow me out to the truck to ask for another shot. Watch how I drive away real s...l...o...w. Maybe they'll follow me."

Maybe that's the theory with your termite spray?????

No termites here, we have a state law banning them.Same goes for poisonous snakes, Alligators,All species of Brown Bears, earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes.

Seriously, how far north do they live?

Every time I see that title, I read termites are eating my face.
Reminds me of 1984 and the rats.

Spiders-
Every spring, I find spiders that have overwintered in my house. I catch and transport them to the garden, where the hunting will be better.

In Canada, native species of termites are known from British Columbia and southern Alberta, and possibly another species in southern Ontario.

Non-Canadian species have been found in houses- (illegal immigrants?)

Goose Gander, I became curious and read about dry-wood termites at a University of Arizona site. If I were you, I would get rid of that wooden fence, replacing it with non-wood. You don't want those destructive insects going from that fence to your house.

It would cost money, but how much would it cost to treat the house?

Termites are endemic in coastal southern California where I live. Termite treatment is a cost-of-living expense around here.

So, if it wasn't the termites from the fence, it would be a termites from elsewhere, I guess.
