Subject: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: Bobert Date: 09 Aug 12 - 11:03 AM Well, folks, I knew it had to happen sometime and with all the tree cuttin' from "the bomb" we had last month my ol' friend has give up the fight and no longer has sufficient compression to even start... Sniff... I loved that saw... Bought it in 1982 and have used the heck out of it... I priced a cylinder/piston assembly for it and it's $175 but then I looked at the sprocket and other parts and figured that if I did put a new cylinder/piston assembly in it that as I tore it down I'd find other worn out stuff so... ...as much as I hate to do it I've bought a new Stihl MS 250 which is as close to the 028 that is available but it just doesn't feel the same... Makes me feel like I'm cheatin' on the 028... I'm sure I'll learn to love this one, too, but it will never be quite the same... Sniff B:~( |

Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: Richard Bridge Date: 09 Aug 12 - 11:23 AM I find my MS230 can be a bit temperamental to start. |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: bobad Date: 09 Aug 12 - 11:44 AM I got a MS 250 last year as my 20 year Homelite gave up the ghost - it's a great little saw, it cuts twice as fast as my Homelite did. |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: Bobert Date: 09 Aug 12 - 11:45 AM I'll see how how I'm doing in a couple weeks, Sins... If no better than, yeah, I might need a little couch time... Yeah, Ricard, they are temperamental... The guy at the Stilh store told me never to pull it more than twice on full choke before going to half choke and once it has been started that day, unless its real cold, just click it down once to run to restart... Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: GUEST,saulgoldie Date: 09 Aug 12 - 12:31 PM You know, Bobster, it's just a fucking chainsaw! Now if it were a MARTIN 28, that'd be something... Saul |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: Bobert Date: 09 Aug 12 - 12:37 PM Actually, saul... My first real guitar was a '66 Martin D-18 which I bought new and played for decades before giving it to my great niece 3 or 4 years ago... I play my $40 pawn shop bought S.Yari... As for my 028 Stihl... Think I'll just keep it... Never know??? B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 09 Aug 12 - 12:47 PM One thing I like about my Stihl MS 170 is that the cowl covering the sparkplug removes by turning a single lock knob 90°. It's like the Stihl folks acknowledged that the thing is prone to flooding, so they made it as easy as possible to pull the plug and crank the excess fuel out of the cylinder. By contrast, I also have a couple of Husqvarnas, and removing the cowls on them involves unscrewing several screws. They're less prone to flooding than the Stihl, but more trouble when it does happen. |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 09 Aug 12 - 01:02 PM You're a bluesman, Bobert; compose a blues song about its passing. The song will lighten the load and save money on therapy. Meanwhile, we'll start a betting pool on how long it takes before somebody declares that the song isn't really about a chainsaw, that the chainsaw symbolizes something else. |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: Bobert Date: 09 Aug 12 - 02:25 PM Well, leeneia, not long... Ya' see, the blues is 99% about womenz and other natural disasters... B;~) |

Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: Rapparee Date: 09 Aug 12 - 04:12 PM My wife's little McCulloch electric stands us just fine. Of course, we're not into cutting really big stuff. I'd rent one if I needed that or call one of the locals with one of those 48" blade jobs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: ranger1 Date: 09 Aug 12 - 09:49 PM Oh, Bobert! I'm so sorry for your loss! I've used an 029, an 039, an ms 290, and, my favorites so far (and of course no longer made), an ms 361. They tell me that the 362 is just a newer version of a 361, but I dunno...Plus, it's a $700 chainsaw. I guess I'll just stick with the one I inherited from my dad, a Husqvarna Rancher 55. But it is a pain in the butt to service, have to take the whole thing apart to get to anything. |

Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: Bobert Date: 10 Aug 12 - 09:25 AM The newer Husqvarnas ain't what they used to be... I have a Husqvarna weed-eater and it is junk... Seems that everything these days is inferior to the older stuff... Maybe that's why older 028s are still bringing almost as much on ebay as the new Stihs at the store??? B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Obit: My ol' Stihl 028 Chainsaw... Sniff From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 10 Aug 12 - 10:04 AM You guys don't fool me. You don't really care about all the mechanical aspects of chainsaws. You're the kind of guys that get down the block from me and compose sonatas on the damn chain saws, trying to drive me crazy. aawwwRRR PPPP! aawwwRRR PPPP! brddle-brddle-brddle aawwwRRR PPPP! NGNGowweeee aawwwRRR PPPP! Bobert, you should compose a guitar solo for your blues song that imitates those chain-saw sonatas. |

Yesterday afternoon we had 3 minutes of Holy $%#@*&^ and I watched a Poplar limb fall 50 ft. onto my patio!...right on top of the Maple limbs from the last storm. Expecting more storms tonight **shoulda got that new chain last Fall** |

We useta have silver dollars, gold "Double Eagles" ($20 gold pieces), newspapers with some real content in 'em instead of a hopeless mass of specious propaganda and corporate advertisin', Silver Certificates insteada them worthless Federal Reserve Notes, vinyl records insteada 25 million disposable bits and bytes on a teeny computer, movies with some kinda adult (meaning mature and intelligent) story line in 'em insteada a buncha stupid CGI actions scenes, Bogart and Bacall insteada idiots like Adam Sandler and J Lo. Ain't NOTHIN' like it usta be! I think I might be gettin' too old for this world, the way it's goin'. I bet Socrates felt like that too some days. And Walt Whitman. And Tarzan. - Chongo |

Nice little buzzer. But since I only got one maple and one apple I don't need more than my old buck saw. Sold it for more than I paid for it. |

Sniff From: GUEST,Chongo Chimp Date: 11 Aug 12 - 12:30 PM Looks like it's time fer me to say somethin' nice about Bobertz again....only I can't think of anything nice I could say that wouldn't be a lie. ;-D Let's face it, the guy is a hopeless case, a sad joke, a depraved hillbilly without the brains of a gnat. It's amazin' to me that he managed to put in hundreds of hours on a chain saw without cuttin' his own leg off. I thought there was a law against sellin' dangerous equipment to people who are so dumb that they can't even sign their own name or zip up their pants right. Who made this country, Bobertz? Idiots with Stihl chainsaws or heros with guns in their hands? Huh? Answer me that, Bozo! - Chongo |
