Being a Grandpa carries the benefit of being allowed to brag.

Our Kylea at just over three wanted a hard boiled egg, but she didn't know the words, so she just explained that she wanted a "Water Egg" and accompanied it with her own sign language, a clenched fist waggled back and forth.

Well "I" thought it was clever.

I'm reading a book about the origins of language & gestures are an early form of language. Your wonderful ganddaughter did a very good job of communicating her needs.

Do you suppose the clenched fist represented the egg, jiggling in the boiling water? Very observant!

Thanks for posting. A young child's acquisition of language is one of the most amazing feats in all of nature.

Yes leenia, I always have to pick her up and let her see what is cooking in any pot that is on the stove.

You must all have stories, share them with us.

Like when Dante was learning to talk his 'M's came out as 'B's so Mom was Bob and Grandma was Grbob.

Well, 27 years ago we learned about nouns & verbs.

My son was nursed unlil he was about 2, gradually reducing frequency... but sometimes he would beg... "nuss! nuss!" and would be accommodated.
Then one day he happened to see an open copy of Playboy magazine, and happily pointed to the centerfold and laughed... "NUSS!"

This is the time of year my boys would ask for a bowl of "nicecream." Then they'd flop down and complain, "I'm boring!"

They never developed a true twin language, but were hard to dissuade if they agreed on something (they saw white balloons float away at sunset, then, a couple days later, a full moon. They KNEW it was a really big one that got away.)

Yesterday I was trying to get ready to go somewhere and was in the bathroom brushing my teeth. Jeremiah followed me in and was playing with a largish truck. He was standing up, bent over with his hands on the truck pushing it at a slight jog. He was trying to run it under the toilet and while the truck fit under the curves of the toilet, Jeremiah's head did not. He stopped short, started to cry and came running to me...rubbing his forehead as tears streamed down his sweet face as he cried out, "I hurted my potty!!!!"

LOL

Several hugs and kisses later he was off and running! :)
