Subject: BS: ireland, water and hydro electricty From: The Sandman Date: 19 Aug 12 - 12:25 PM we have an excess of water, most of which is wasted. contrast Norway, who have been using see here Of the total production in 2007 of 137 TWh, 135 TWh was from hydroelectric plants, 1 536 GWh was from thermal power, and 892 GWh was wind generated.[1] In same year, the total consumption was 115 TWh.[2] The annual electricity consumption was about 26-27 MWh per inhabitant during 2004-2009 when the European union (EU15) average in 2008 was 7.4 MWh. Norway's consumption of electricity was over three times higher per person compared to the EU 15 average in 2008. The domestic electricity supply promotes use of electricity. why is it not possible for ireland to sell excess water , to countries who are short of it |

Subject: RE: BS: ireland, water and hydro electricty From: The Sandman Date: 19 Aug 12 - 06:18 PM oh yes, gnu, please elucidate, it may not be easy but it starts to employ people in something non consumer orientated, and then kick starts the economy, while encouraging a degree of fuel self sufficency, are you an alien, have you never heard of roosevelt and the hoover dam, i believe you are American? |

Subject: RE: BS: ireland, water and hydro electricty From: MartinRyan Date: 19 Aug 12 - 06:19 PM Most of Ireland's water is low down - unlike Norway's. Exporting water takes up too much space - at least for now... ;>)> Regards |

Subject: RE: BS: ireland, water and hydro electricty From: gnu Date: 19 Aug 12 - 06:49 PM I indeed have heard of the Hoover Dam even tho I am not a Yank. Have you heard of the problems with the Colorado River? Have you heard of any problems associated with building dams anywhere? One cannot just go do anything at all without thinking things thru. If it's a good idea, great, but ya gotta look at the ins and outs. If building a dam employs people for less than ten years and then makes a shitload of money for the people that own the dam but also screws the farms and fishing and whatever the people who earned a paycheck over the construction and commissioning period used to be able to do then the dam is just a temporary lift and then it's a detrement to them. A good plan for hydro developement is welcome but it isn't so easy or advisable. Type in "dam protests" on You Tube and see how many people are getting literally fucked all over the world over improperly handled dam building. BTW, I am a Canuck (soils engineer, BTW) and we Canucks are one of the best in the world at dam building which is why the Chinese hire Canucks to build many of their dams. And some Chinese are more than pissed about it. Good dam building is GOOD. Bad dam building is damning. That ain't rocket science... it's common science. |

Subject: RE: BS: ireland, water and hydro electricty From: The Sandman Date: 20 Aug 12 - 05:12 AM Exporting water takes up too much space - at least for now. really , but exporting oil does not, me thinks foreign oilcompanies would not like ireland to be self sufficient energy wise. good points gnu, but there is also tidal energy which norway uses, ireland is surrounded by water. |
