Subject: RE: BS: Reality: Real or Fake? From: GUEST, Ebbie, housesitting Date: 14 Sep 12 - 01:50 AM That brings up an interesting question. I have quite frequently seen something that I discovered no one else had seen (Quiet, Bill D!:) and it got me to thinking: How can we possibly know what is real? One person's reality may be a far stretch from another's. Two people standing side by side admiring a sunset- are they discussing the same things? I remember one time years ago sitting in a car in north Portland, Oregon when the car filled with dancing, glittering, multi-colored lights (Actually, I thought it was a rainbow). I looked at my brother and laughed. He laughed with me. Years later he told me that he had seen nothing, that he laughed because I did. |

Subject: RE: BS: Reality: Real or Fake? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 14 Sep 12 - 04:20 PM Reality may sometimes be illusory, but it's not fake. "Fake" implies intentional deception. For reality to be fake, there would need to be a deceiver of Miltonian proportions. If we follow that path very far we'll wind up burning witches at the stake again. Let's just say that reality is real, but it's interpretation is subject to the imperfections of human perception and understanding. |

Subject: RE: BS: Reality: Real or Fake? From: Bill D Date: 14 Sep 12 - 05:25 PM (for Ebbie: The fact is, all experiences are real. Whether all the phenomena composing them are based in 'material' entities is not a question we can easily answer. *I* seldom have any that I have doubts about, but I know a number of folks who seem to. I have certain biases, but *shrug*.... maybe someday enlightenment will strike.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Reality: Real or Fake? From: Bobert Date: 14 Sep 12 - 05:32 PM That is, Bill, if this entire thing known as life and Earth actually exist... This could all be part of a collective mirage... You know... An optical delusion... B;~) |
Subject: RE: BS: Reality: Real or Fake? From: Bill D Date: 14 Sep 12 - 05:56 PM Yeah, Bobert... that's what the philosopher David Hume said.... and he made a real good case for it, but then in a footnote he said..(paraphrased)"I really think my analysis is right on, but some days, it sure is hard to remember that when 'life' happens." |
Subject: RE: BS: Reality: Real or Fake? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 14 Sep 12 - 06:02 PM By the way, when I said above, "For reality to be fake, there would need to be a deceiver of Miltonian proportions," I neglected to point out that I do, in fact, live in Milton, Florida and am, therefore, a Miltonian. I can assure you that if such a deceiver did exist in such a small town, I would be aware of him. That's not to say that Milton is totally free of used car salesmen, insurance agents, lawyers, and bingo parlor operators, but none of them are named Lucifer. |
Subject: RE: BS: Reality: Real or Fake? From: Bill D Date: 14 Sep 12 - 06:25 PM Ahh... but if it WAS Lucifer, he would use a nom de plume...mebbe somthin' like 'Krinkle' |
Subject: RE: BS: Reality: Real or Fake? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 14 Sep 12 - 06:32 PM If you start with the assumption that what you are perceiving is reality, then isn't it, by definition, real? "Reality": Real or Fake? is the way you should be putting it. Right? |
Subject: RE: BS: Reality: Real or Fake? From: Rapparee Date: 14 Sep 12 - 09:20 PM Well, as Plato pointed out, all "reality" is simply a reflection of the "real", mere shadows of the "real" we cannot comprehend reflected upon a philosophical wall. And as my philosophy teacher pointed out, lower your head and run full tilt at that reflection of a stone wall and test its reality. That's why reality is fake. |

Why should I believe this "Plato" anyway? Who gave him the news? Speaking for myself, which means for all of so-called you, I'm just a brain kept alive in a vat in the thirty-ninth century, and all of "you" are mere hallucinations induced electronically by the Vatmasters. Prove me wrong. Don't bother. You can't. Because I'm only talking to myself. Yawn. |
