Lucchese are good. I used to have a small collection, which I mostly split among the kids, mostly Lucchese.
The most comfortable store-bought I had was a pair of Olathe ropers. They were made before the company moved to Texas, calf and ostrich. I found them at a goodwill store, near new.

I had a pair of hornback Lucchese, which luckily also fit a son.

Born in New Mexico, I had by first western boots by age 8.

(olddude, looks like you also collected everything that could be tied down)

Can't afford 'em -- you must be rich! I stick with Ariat or Justin Ropers because I don't care for the Cuban heel. And 999, you know that these are more the style a manly he-man like olddude wears.

The way you do stuff is like this. Do the picker thing. I find shit that I know people would buy, sell it at a profit and get the stuff I want. Nothing comes out of the paycheck. Just get a book on antiques and start looking. I will buy old pocket watches, pay my amish friend, dump them on ebay and get what I want ... thats how I got 9 hamilton 992b's who can afford nine of them. They are expensive. Same with the boots, just dumps some crap on ebay and buy a pair. If you search ebay some of the discontinued New in the box ones you can get for under 200

A couple years ago I walked into an antique store. There was a pot metal cowboy statue, very cheaply made. The antique guy said it was part of a lamp. I bought it 80 bucks. Sold it for $550 , why, it wasn't a lamp part, it was a sovenier from buffalo bills wild west show they sold them at the show.

The collector was thrilled. You can buy some nice boots doing that

Some guys go looking for gold in Alaska, it is run in your house or down the street in an antique store. They dealers don't know everything nor do I but you can find lots of deals

I've still got (and have no intention of selling) my circa 1962 (featured on the back cover of Western Horseman) black Acme cowboy boots with a white and metallic gold starburst fore and aft and a 1-1/2 inch walking heel (underslung).

In the mid-'70s when I took them to Eli the Cobbler in Biddeford, Maine to be resoled, he ran his hand lovingly up and down the boot and muttered, "Oh...old Acmes."

My parents paid $29.95 for those boots at Hall's Saddlery in West Allis, Wisconsin. (I was a little disappointed -- I wanted the silver grey roughout pair with the dogger heal.)

Last year I sold 5 pair of circa 1985 Frye cowboy boots.

Right now I've got a brand new pair (hardly a scuff on the sole) of Style 6158 Tony Lamas in black. Western cut, walking heel, and leathery of such a buttery consistency all ya want to do is pet it. I'd like to sell them, but probably best to sell them to someone more or less local.

Local farm and ranch store is having a sale, so I popped in this morning (this is where I bought the quirt). Few slick-soled boots; most working folk around here -- men and women -- are more likely to want lugged soles and steel toes on their cowboy boots.

So I drove over to the western store. I'll go a hundred bucks for a nice pair, but four and five hundred dollars for a pair of boots made outa somethin' I be afraid to stomp is kinda outa my league.

I'll just keep using what I have and have them resoled when the time comes. We have at least two cobbler's shops in town; one will even install calks if you want them.

I used to live 10 min. from Sheplers original shop on North Main in Wichita... before they opened huge- and now world famous- store out by the airport.

There were two saddle & leather shops in the same block(1950s & early 60s)... Sheplers and Carl Strom's. Strom went to high school with my father and we sometimes went in there to say hello when I was a kid. Too bad the guy with the best business sense was someone I had no 'in' with.

I once bought a Western hat from Shepler's as a present.... twern't cheap.

Passed my Stetsons on to the kids. I kept an old brown one with a small hole in it. Also kept an old Monte Cristo panama. Those are the only hats I have left.

Back in Texas Lucchese boots are worn by lots of folks - who aren't planning on getting on a horse. They save them for dress up occasions.

I wore Justin boots for most of the time I was in the Army, and for a few years after, since the round-toed ones in plain black were an approved substitute for the standard "dress shoe" and you could just yank 'em on without lacing and tying. It appears that they're calling them the "Ropers" now(?).

It seemed though that each pair lasted about half as long as the previous pair and I gave them up when the last pair mostly disintegrated in less than about 2 months.

This was when they shifted production to Mexico, and started using really cheap (poorly tanned?) leather. I've heard that they've returned most of it to the US.

I had a couple of pairs of Luccheses later, but kind of gave up on the fancy plastic cowboy look, partly because of a similar "quality" problem. Their quality problems then (~50 years ago) probably were solved, since it's unlikely either Justin or Lucchese would still be in business if they hadn't.

I never was much into "fancy" for any boots. Around here the sayin' is "if you can't wear a little shit on the outside there's probably nothin' but shit on the ... ..."
