The Westboro Baptist "Church" is not recognized by any other Baptist churches as a btw. This will no doubt cause considerable stress for Romney's campaign.

Addicted to Hate: The Fred Phelps Story

One of many places to find the same article that "explains" the origins of Westboro. If your stomach is strong enough to read it, it might also shed some light on the purpose(?) and methods(?) of this band of bigots.

The article was written by a young reporter who was assigned to find out something about the church. When he turned the story in, the publisher declined to print it. A lawsuit followed, in which the story was quickly (and perhaps surreptitiously) submitted as evidence, making it a public record which may be freely copied and distributed, as long as no changes are made.

It's on many websites, but seems to get moved around quite a bit.

John

Jack...idiots like these certainly dont help the stance which I promote.

I dont really understand what they are trying to achieve, reason doesn't seem to play any part.

Hope you were not attempting to link me to fundamentalist nut jobs?
Maybe you should change the "Ake" in the title to "Ian"?   :0)

I wanted you to see it. I am not sure that Ian would absorb the lesson, but your point is under consideration.

Hang on, I need to look up droll in the thesaurus so as not to repeat Akenaton. it only encourages him.

I'm a fundamentalist nut job, so the cap fits perfectly.

Except of course, unlike the man who misspells his nom de plume so as not to be associated with the bisexual Akhenaton, I don't promote a stance. You do not promote or denigrate people's right to their lifestyle, you merely accept it.

Assuming you have no personality disorder of course...

Hello Sailor! (Sorry, I forgot to put it at the top of the post. Too absorbed in your lesson.) After all, a thread all about the rise of Dumbfuckistan with Jack the Sailor getting concerned about it is rather ironic given his past outrage at the mere thought....

Intramural squabbles aside, Phelps and his small group of followers are contemptible.Too bad they get so much publicity, but inevitable I suppose.

That's the first I've really seen anything of Phelps himself. I knew to expect sick garbage, but I guess I expected sick garbage expressed with some overlay of normal human behaviour. How does anyone in that mental condition get together the resources to travel all over the country?

Holy moly! That is one sick fuck. What is even sicker is what froggy asks because it means there are even sicker fucks that support him (I assume so, froggy). God help us all.

How does anyone in that mental condition get together the resources to travel all over the country?

Mentally ill people feel a certain kinship, and they pool their money?

In actuality, most "demonstrations" far from home are attended by only one or two representatives from the home church, with most of the mobs assembled from local "sympathizers." There are nut cases of that kind almost everywhere, and many are so "dissociated" that they have little comprehension of who/what they're supporting, and don't care as long as they get to cause a distrubance.

The nominal "leader" now is one of Fred's daughters, whose day job is as an administrative "counselor(???)" at a Kansas Prison. Some of us suspect she's on the wrong side of the couch, of course.

Fred's demand that all of his kids be lawyers suggests that the main goal of the group actually is to piss someone off enough to entice them into doing something they can be sued for. Fred himself was good enough at that to have been disbarred multiple times from several court systems, but of course proving intent is usually difficult, and in many cases doesn't matter in court.

In 1979 a peaceful march was organized in Greensboro, NC, in support of civil rights...

KKKers set up along the march route and opened fire killing many un-armed marchers...

No charges were filed...

Welcome to Redneck America...

"Since the early 1990s, Phelps has targeted several individuals and groups in the public eye for criticism by the Westboro Baptist Church.
Prominent examples include President Ronald Reagan, Princess Diana, Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, National Football League star Reggie White, Sonny Bono, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, atheists, Muslims, murdered college student Matthew Shepard, the late children's television host Fred Rogers, the late Australian actor Heath Ledger, Comedy Central's Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, political commentator Bill O'Reilly, Jews,[60] Catholics, Australians,[61] Swedes, the Irish and US soldiers killed in Iraq."

Makes one feel like a slacker not to be on that list.

How one community responded:

Calmness prevailed and those with opposing views even had some civil dialog.

Guest Marnie's post does reflect people reacting about as positively as they could to a situation. But that wasn't the Whackborough "church"; from anything I've seen, I don't think Phelp's mob would even allow anyone to attempt a civil dialog with them. And frankly I don't want to get close enough to any of them to discuss anything with them.

The Greensboro March was organized by the communist party; the general dislike of them probably was one reason for the lack of effective police presence. The shootings occurred after a melee broke out.
No excuse for the shootings and the presence of arms; the failure of law enforcement at the time, and lack of successful prosecution of those responsible for the five killed, was despicable.

The Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report details the sequence of events and should be read by anyone interested in mob violence.

Bobert, thanks for bringing the Greensboro event up; it has application everywhere groups at odds exist, and the prospect for violent conflict is likely.

According to local lore, the first Patriot Guard event originated from Mulvane, Kansas, a relatively small town about 30 miles south of Wichita. They continue to be "leaders" in the movement, although it has spread internationally with many "centers of organization."

Although their presence at Westoborough "demonstrations of lunacy" have been most reported, smaller groups of appropriate size here attempt to show their respect at all ceromonies for anyone identified as a "veteran."

We respect and admire them, and are very thankful for their presence and efforts.

John

The Phelps family should be put in a museum as an example of what can happen when close relatives marry.
