Subject: RE: National Dialect Day 2012 From: open mike Date: 11 Oct 12 - 12:40 PM "speaking" of dialects: Did you hear about the last speaker of the Cromarty fisherfolk dialect in Scotland who died recently? The first report of this i saw had a link to a page with a glossary of words. http://www.npr.org/2012/10/07/162461957/scottish-dialects-last-speaker-dies http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/05/world/europe/scotland-dead-dialect/index.html The last person that retired engineer Bobby Hogg, 92, was able to speak to was his brother Gordon, who died last year. here are some other dialects..http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/lifestyle/2012/10/death-cromarty-fisherfolk-dialect and more info here: http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/item/item_page.jsp?item_id=131892 |
Subject: RE: National Dialect Day 2012 From: GUEST,Black Belt Caterpillar Wrestler Date: 12 Oct 12 - 07:31 AM I never picked up the local dialect in Somerset when I was little. I remember that some of the older members of the community talked in such a way that I could not understand them. Nobody talks that way nowadays, there are lots of words missing from the vocabulary. Unfortunately I cannot remember them as they made no sense to me at the time. However, I do find that I can understand enough of what Sid says to make sense of what he says! Must be an age and experience thing. |
