Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dance to your Shadow From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 01 Nov 99 - 07:27 PM I think the two were coupled on Dolores Keane & John Faulkner's album "Broken-Hearted I'll Wander". If I can find it I'll try to transcribe the lyric for you. Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dance to your Shadow From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 04 Nov 99 - 10:19 PM Hin, hin, ha-ra-da-la Hin, hin, ha-ra-da-la Hin, ho ha-ra-da-la Hin, ha-ra-dal o ro Hin, hin, ha-ra-da-la Hin, hin, ha-ra-da-la Hin, ho ha-ra-da-la Hin, ha-ra-dal o ro There are tunes in the River Otter Published by Boosey & Hawkes, 1921 as "The River Calling"; I haven't seen that edition, so I don't know who wrote the English words. It turns up again in the 1923 edition of "Songs of the Hebrides" (vol. 3) as "The Hazel by the River", with a quite different English text (uncredited, so perhaps by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser). The Gaelic text (of which neither English version is a translation) is as follows: Theid mi null air an abhuinn Tha na maoir ga ma shireadh Described as "An ancient Skye mouth-tune from Keith MacDonald's Puirt-a-Beul". Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dance to your Shadow From: Philippa Date: 09 Dec 99 - 11:45 AM I've done a rough translation of the Gaelic words: Bandó ribinnean a shioda's de ribinnean [bands of silken ribbons] Bandó ribinnean á ruidealadh mu'd cheann-sa. [bands of ribbons woven about my head] [McLaren dictionary trans. of 'ruideal' - a riddle, a coarse sieve; in English 'to riddle' can mean to sift or to poke holes in]
Theid mi null air an abhuinn
I'll go across the river
Tha na maoir ga ma shireadh
Cha gabh mi ach taillear. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dance to your Shadow From: GUEST Date: 29 Jan 12 - 04:47 PM I was hearing "Hen, hen, halibut a hen, hen halibut a hen, hen halibut a hen, halibut a roe. There are chills in the river otter pools in the rive water pools in the river in the river called Siene." It's amazing how the brain fills in the gaps based on cultural references... |
