Subject: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: Bobert Date: 24 Nov 12 - 06:46 PM I've always enjoyed Jimi Hendrix's version of "Hey Joe" but never thought to do it until today... The P-Vine and I were having lunch at a local BBQ joint and it they were playin' it and I was thinkin', "Hey, cool song to work up"... I just did a Google on it and discovered that the song has been covered by lotta folks over the years: The Who, The Byrds, ZZ Tops, Deep Purple, etc.... But I don't think it is "over" covered these days and it really is a blues song (kinda) so I'm goin' see if I can stick the lyrics in my head... I know I can play it... It's just a matter of lyrics... Anyone else playing it??? B~ |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: GUEST,Bizibod Date: 24 Nov 12 - 07:26 PM Well! Heard a blues band cover it just tonight , The Keystones , Nottingham UK. Audacious ! Made it totally their own without losing a thing - has my vote ! |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: Lonesome EJ Date: 24 Nov 12 - 07:30 PM My favorite version Hey Joe by The Leaves I think Hendrix' cover of the song was the first slowed-down take on it, although Tim Rose, rumored to have had a role in writing some of it, did one that fell between Hendrix and the Leaves version I linked tempo-wise. Willy Deville also had a version I'm fond of.... Hey Jose |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Nov 12 - 07:32 PM I think it's my duty to sing this song on occasion... |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: Bobert Date: 24 Nov 12 - 07:50 PM The "Hey Jose" version is the shits!!! I love it... B~ |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: frogprince Date: 24 Nov 12 - 11:38 PM So I hit the Leaves link, expecting a version of Carl Smith's Hey Joe, and I thought I'd slpped into another cosmic dimension. That's the first I ever heard of Willy Deville. 1. Seeing someone dressed like that, performing that material, is insane. 2. I agree with Bobert's evaluation of the performance. |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: Bobert Date: 25 Nov 12 - 09:06 AM Yeah, I'd never heard of Willy Deville either but I love his version... B~ |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: GUEST,Gibsonboy Date: 25 Nov 12 - 11:32 AM Try Tim O'Brien, Jerry Douglas and John Doyle, at Celtic Connections, (its on You Tube), for me it is a stunning performance from three of the best players of American Traditional Music in the world. |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: michaelr Date: 25 Nov 12 - 11:57 AM Nobody's bothered by the subject matter of the song? "Hey Joe" is about a guy who has shot his woman out of jealousy and goes on the lam to Mexico. Not my choice of song to sing, classic though it may be. |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 25 Nov 12 - 12:16 PM I played it in high school.....never since. GfS |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: Lonesome EJ Date: 25 Nov 12 - 12:30 PM If we leave out all the men-mistreating-women songs, should we also leave out the women-mistreating-men songs? So much for the Blues! Yes, the Tim Obrien Jerry Douglas live version is just fantastic! |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: GUEST,Big Al whittle Date: 25 Nov 12 - 12:33 PM I saw Tim Rose play it, a few months before ghe died at The Fishponds in Matlock Bath. Quite what he was doing - playing a tiny pub to a not terribly attentive audience, I don't know. I remember him saying that the night he first performed it in the studio - the guy behind the desk - phoned up the President of the record company to come see musical history being made. Its certainly a striking chord sequence. Seeing hendrix play it on Top of the pops was the English audiences first view of Hendrix - Hedrick picking with his teeth, Noel Reddings thunderous bass lines. Don't despise songs that help musicians make a living Michael. Morals are pretty flexible and change from age to age - a thing of beauty , etc. |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: lifebusker Date: 25 Nov 12 - 07:39 PM I've played it a million times. It's always a great song to do when jamming. |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: Bobert Date: 25 Nov 12 - 08:58 PM One of the reasons that I like the Willy Deville version is that he has it structured to do it without having to go thru a lot of jirations with all the "talk" lines that, unless yer gonna do it note for note (not me) are tedious... I can dial Willy's version up as a straight up blues song and do my own "talk" as it fits... B~ |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: michaelr Date: 25 Nov 12 - 11:30 PM Don't despise songs that help musicians make a living Michael. No, I would never. Just not my kind of song to sing. Morals are pretty flexible and change from age to age - a thing of beauty , etc. Agree with the first part. Beauty? Not so much... |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: GUEST,Big Al Whittle Date: 26 Nov 12 - 03:06 AM 'Don't despise songs that help musicians make a living Michael.' No, I would never. Just not my kind of song to sing.' Mine neither, Michael. Like I say interesting chords sequence. Classic even - so much room for interpretation C G D A E (had to check - see if I remembered it only to find none of my guitars in standard tuning!) |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: cooperman Date: 26 Nov 12 - 07:26 AM I do this occasionally - I've loved it since I was a kid. It is better with a couple of backing singers in skimpy black dresses giving it the oooo ooooo oooo ooooh (preferably female!) Never heard anyone match Hendrix version though. |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: GUEST,Black Belt Caterpillar Wrestler Date: 26 Nov 12 - 07:36 AM Yep, I do it accompanied on G/D Anglo; and they said it couldn't be done! Actually I quite like the result and it gives me an excuse to be loud:) |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 26 Nov 12 - 08:20 AM Most interesting version I heard was by Lick the Tins Check it out. Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: GUEST,George Frampton Date: 26 Nov 12 - 09:10 AM I recall the late Peter Bellamy doing Hey Joe at a 'Rough Music' late night session at the Bracknell Folk Festival in the 1980s. He felt obliged to apologise for not playing the guitar with his teeth during the song! |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: GUEST,thank you Date: 29 Oct 14 - 12:59 AM Thank you I am trying to do the Tim O'Brien version, and your link gave me a lot of incredible possibilities for this song - Mae |
Subject: RE: Anyone doing 'Hey Joe'??? From: GUEST Date: 29 Oct 14 - 10:46 AM I believe the origins of the song were as a folk song. See Wikipedia, there were some early acoustic versions! |
