Subject: Taken under A. Thieme's wing & thankful From: katlaughing Date: 29 Oct 99 - 04:15 PM Coming at the tail end of five kids spanning 16 years, I learned only a few of the old folk songs, cowboy and otherwise, that we were raised on by our mom and dad. Having discovered the Mudcat the tail end of last December, I am learning so many more songs and so MUCH more about the whole world of folk. Today, I received two suprise tapes from Art Thieme of concerts and radio programs he did years ago, before being restricted by MS. I have already received two other tapes from him, plus his latest cd, The Older I Get, The Better I Was. I have been learning a lot of very wonderful sogs from these; songs which fulfill my heart and/or make it ache with an unexplainable longing, a sort of psychic emotional tie to Art, his superb singing and picking, and the songs and tunes themselves and what they are about. These songs will never sond right to me, done by anyone else, because his were the first versions of many of them I've heard. Anyway, it struck me, today, with all that I am learning, I feel as though I am being tutored or mentored by Art and I marvel at his ability to give so much and his compleat and total selflessness. I will never be able to repay him for the quiet kindness he has shown me and the friendship he has extended. I will be forever grateful. Thank you, Art. luvyaKat |

When I first found Mudcat I became familiar with other sea song enthusiasts and for a while considered one of our shanteymen my online mentor. He hasn't a clue that I felt that way, but he did guide me along. Margo |

Subject: RE: Taken under A. Thieme's wing & thankful From: Art Thieme Date: 29 Oct 99 - 11:16 PM Kat---I'm embarrassed. Nice of you to say. But it's always been my "job"---as I've viewed it---to pass on the songs. I hope I don't forget I sent those to you & asend 'em again. Ask Dan Milner---I really did send him that old "River" tape twice. He bought it the first time. A few weeks later I'd forgotten all about that. I thought I was just thanking him for that beautiful Iceland video I bought from him in our auction. But this sin't worth of a whole thread, kid. Again, thanks. The tape i dubbed for kat was a concert Fred Holstein, Jim Craig & I had done in Chicago on Woody's birthdat---at Holstein's folk club---a bar on the North side o' town (across from the Biograph Theater where John Dilinger was killed. A friend made a bunch of money pounding lead fishing weights into the wooden telephone pole there and selling 'em to tourists after digging those out of the pole & telling them it was buckshot from that caper......but I digress. We did those "Woody" shows for several years & they were great fun. Fleming Brown did some of the early ones with us---Ginni Clemmens too...but I thought the ones with the 3 of us were pretty good. And Kat, Corol loves the necklace you made for her!! Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: Taken under A. Thieme's wing & thankful From: katlaughing Date: 29 Oct 99 - 11:41 PM It was worth a thread, dear Art, Fine Art! You are too modest! The songs are wonderful as, of course, is your singing and picking as well as Fred & Craig's. I already have listened to them 3-4 times, today and have several songs I want to learn right away, especially the Hobo's Lullaby. I am going to put it ont he tape of lullabies I am making for the grandbabies. Also, Art, I LOVE your own song on there, Chicagotown Blues! Great Song, phoaks. If you haven't heard it, you gotta! I was going to email you, but wanted to listen to them for a bit first. Then I felt so overwhelmed when the mentor thing went off like a light bulb in my head, I figured I weave a litle thread and see where it goes! BTW, you know what we've all been saying about our memory function, so don't feel badly! Good to know Carol still likes the baubles. Thanks for that. luvyaKat |

Subject: RE: Taken under A. Thieme's wing & thankful From: katlaughing Date: 29 Oct 99 - 11:51 PM Sorry, got the name of a song wrong. It's not the Hobo's Lullaby, it's Do To Sleep You Weary Hobo. Beautiful song! Am listening to the tapes right now. Art, you are my choice for the best voice for folksongs to come out of Chicago. |
