That news was first aired at least a month ago, (with more information added since). I was aware of it early in November when ICBC (BC government auto insurance) rented a vehicle from the local Budget outlet for me for three days, while mine was being repaired. The ICBC rep. told me on the phone that I'd have to give Budget my credit card for a $50 deposit. No way was I giving them access to my credit card. I showed up with $50 cash to pick up the vehicle. They grumbled and said they might not be able to give me cash back when I returned the vehicle, but they accepted the cash and miraculously had cash to give me back when it was returned.   

It does seem only to be someone at Budget in the Vancouver area that is involved. It's a shame that the Budget offices in other places may be losing business because of one dishonest person/group.

I owned and managed a "rent-a-wreck" for the last 20 years of my working life...

10% of my customers stole my cars...

20% of my customers never paid for their rentals...

Yeah, I made a living but it wasn't some slam-dunk great living... It was a slobber knocker for 20 years...

In that time, I had at least 20 cars out-right stolen... I had at least a hundred, maybe 200, folks renting cars and not paying for the rentals...

BTW, my rental cars were cheaper than any rental car company within 1000 miles...

That's the rest of the story...

I knew a guy that would pour Clorox all over the back tires on a rented Maverick. Smoked up the back tires like you never seen. Burned up a bunch of tires like that.

I've dealt with Budget for years, at various locations in the US - mostly at airports - and have never had any trouble. In fact, on a couple of occasions they have shrugged of minor damage (such as parking lot dings) that I wold have expected to be charged for. This seems to be yet another case (sadly common in venues such as Facebook) of an inappropriate generalization...serious issues with one franchise in one city becomes "Beware Of Budget Rent A Car Cheating Customers".

Here's another thing that folks do with rental cars... They take parts off them... Need an alternator for your Toyota Camry??? No problem, just rent one like yours, swap your bad alternator for their good one and then call the rental car company and tell them that the alternator light is on in their rental car... They will more than likely "comp" you the charges for the car and you'll end up with a new alternator...

I once caught a customer in the middle of taking a transmission out of one of my rental cars???

But, yeah, some rental car/truck companies do some dumb stuff... U-Haul is noted for pulling tricks on their customers... I mean, if you rent a truck you had better go over it with a fine tooth comb 'er you may very well end up paying for something that a previous renter did...
