Hi Kids: I know there was a thread called "what is your favourite fruit", but this goes beyond that.
By chance, I stopped by the local Caribbean store and found a fruit/drink called "Custard Apple" (Guanabana). It really tastes like custard mixed with apples.

Then I asked the store owners, "what's it for?" They told me it was for health and is used to combat cancer. This piqued my interest as I like to eat as healthfully as I can. So I did a little research.

Found this on YouTube...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIAA9velJ34

I sincerely hope this helps. I think it's worth a go...bob

I know. But I'm going with what the people told me at the store. I figure, what the hay. No harm in trying a new fruit. If it does what they say, great, and they didn't see YouTube.

Remember too, that NO MATTER WHAT you post on YouTube, the haterz come out.

I have a song there called The Soul Eater. There is an anime, & book with the same title. I had no idea. So some genius clicks on my song and gives me thumbs down simply because he thought it was the anime, and didn't get what he wanted...go figure...bob

Probably just as good as the peach pits they touted 40 years ago...... as in NOT

If any of this were shown to be useful, the drug companies and the medical experts would be all over it! Hope is nice... but ......

Drug companies will NEVER condone a natural product. And the medical experts I know are so busy chasing their tails that they consider wait times of 12 hours in the Emergency rooms, NORMAL.

You are pretty much on your own when it comes to health. But as for myself, I'm definitely not normal. I think for MYSELF.

So, I get a consensus from MANY sources, and focus what I eat toward health. I believe that at some point there must be a melding between the medical community and natural healers. Let's investigate discoveries like custard apple to find out what works, then use it...

So to those that want to light up another ciggy and down another pint, be my guest...You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink...

Well, I drink 250ml of pomagranate juice a day because I have (HAD) an enlarged prostate. Piss on that one you nay sayers... if your prostate lets you. If not, start drinking it and you can piss all ya want. Good fer yer clesterallclogs too. Take THAT to heart!

Oh... if ya can't afford the pom juice, try apple juice. Not near as good but an apple a day keeps the doc away, eh?

And wash behind yer ears eh? That's where some of yer scent glands are... not applicable to children or over those "the age", of course. I'll bet some of you didn't know that.

Odd innit? Old sayings and wive's tales? They ring true when you have enough years under your belt to realize the truth in them.

That fruit sounds good, Rob, but it IS tropical so growing one a them there trees in my backyaaaad in Moncton, NB ain't gonna happen.

"Drug companies will NEVER condone a natural product. "

Like these, for example?

Or this similar list?

I do hope this fruit proves useful... but that video is promoting it as 'confirmed'... to sell stuff.

Bill... is refining "drugs" in storable and usable form for administration on a timely basis wise rather than telling a patient who needs a "dose" RIGHT NOW they should have been eating a fruit they do not have ready access to a good thing?

Yeah... I know. But it seems lost on some people. Sooo... a balanced and logical approach might be a good thing?... people that knee jerk about drug companies being ONLY about $?

Which cancer? Does it slow down growth of radical cells? kill them?

Or, as is more likely, work to make you feel better in yourself?

Mind over matter and placebo have a place but custard apple is a moonshine example of snake oil. Not knocking the idea of healthy eating and drinking but ascribing it to being a wonder drug is a bit like ascribing a glorious sunset to God whilst not giving him the credit when it is pissing it down with rain.

All this thread is about is CHOICES. I see a fruit in a store and ask, "what's it for?" The answer I get is "it combats cancer." So, I check it out. Good fruit, if it combats cancer, even better, so I added it to my diet, no harm there.

Now, look at the title of this thread. Do you see the ? after Cancer Killer, look carefully. It's there. Whether or not it, in fact, works, is open to investigation and testing...

And gnu, this is for you...http://www.belllifestyleproducts.com/en-ca/prostate-ezee-flow-tea-4a.htm I can tell you, it absolutely works, you feel a difference in about 5 days...great stuff...

Health to all...bob

Those naysayers can naysay this bit I found on a potters' site today. I will be trying it. Potters use lots of minerals and some can be toxic - like the air in any city is toxic.

"Talked with an ole time potter pal at our festival this past weekend and wanted to pass on a tip. Our fellow clay artist had a hair sample analyzed for mineral content and came up very high aluminum and cobalt and some other marginal readings. Not surprising after 40 years of mixing glazes but he found a simple fix.
Apple Pectin. Cheap- readily available and effective.
One year of taking 4 tabs a day he had another sample done.
All minerals within normal ranges."

"if ya can't afford the pom juice, try apple juice."

Watch out. Apple juice can cause constipation. It's also high in sugar.

A friend of mine once broke off an e-mail to me right in the middle because her four-year-old was in bad pain and had to be rushed to the doctor. It turned out to be constipation. The doc said to cut back on the apple juice.

Just because something's "natural" doesn't guarantee it's good for you.

Bought myself a "personal blender" (one shot blending) by Hamilton Beach (free plug, HB send me a cheque, o.k.?)

Now I throw an apple in there and WHA-LA (That's Voila, pronounced like John Wayne) apple juice...good too.

And, the custard apple makes the THICKEST shake you'll ever have.

bobad: It's your root, put it where you want...:0)

Custard Apple is the common name for several trees, most, but not all in the family Annonaceae. The video uses another common name Guanabana, which appears to refer to the species Annona muricata, though I can't be absolutely certain.

Appears there has been some limited research in animals to suggest it is anticarcinogenic.

It also contains a neurotoxin that it appears may cause a neurodegenerative disease. Quoting from the wiki article linked to above:

Toxicology
Annonacin is a neurotoxin found in soursop seeds

The compound annonacin contained in the seeds of soursop is a neurotoxin and it seems to be the cause of a neurodegenerative disease. The only group of people known to be affected live on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and the problem presumably occurs with the consumption of plants containing annonacin. The disorder is a so-called tauopathy associated with a pathologic accumulation of tau protein in the brain. Experimental results demonstrated for the first time that the plant neurotoxin annonacin is responsible for this accumulation.[18]

It might be wise to consume this fruit in somewhat limited quantities.

Gnu - be careful with the pomegranate juice as there seems to be some doubt about mixing it with certain drugs!

Thanks Janie: Much appreciated. The local store sells the raw fruit, which I put in the blender, then sip on it over a period of a few days.

The bottled version contains about 15% fruit. I always believed in moderation with all things.

Now that I take heart medication, I always check out that which might prove to be counter-indicative.

Be careful friends...BR

Red wine and cancer prevention

Research on the antioxidants found in red wine has shown that they may help inhibit the development of certain cancers.

Polyphenols are antioxidant compounds found in the skin and seeds of grapes. Resveratrol is a type of polyphenol. Red wine contains high levels of resveratrol, as do grapes, raspberries, peanuts, and other plants.

Although consumption of large amounts of alcoholic beverages may increase the risk of some cancers, there is growing evidence that the health benefits of red wine are related to its nonalcoholic components.

Research studies published in the International Journal of Cancer show that drinking a glass of red wine a day may cut a man's risk of prostate cancer in half and that the protective effect appears to be strongest against the most aggressive forms of the disease. It was also seen that men who consumed four or more 4-ounce glasses of red wine per week have a 60 percent lower incidence of the more aggressive types of prostate cancer.

News December 2012

Scientists at the University of Leicester found that the resveratrol in two glasses of wine per day can reduce the rate of bowel tumors by around 50%.

For those of you in The USA, we have a UK newspaper called The Daily M*il. It has a habit of saying what causes and cures cancer.   So far coffee cures in more stories than it causes.

Sadly, this thread is liable to degenerate into the same discussion.

I like the clinical advice from those who don't gain from a view such as published papers in The British Medical Journal. Eat a variety of foods and drinks in moderation and don't smoke. If you have no family history for a particular cancer then your odds improve.

Quite right. I think I'll choose my family more carefully next time.

Resveratrol has the broad support of the mainstream scientific community - and seems to bring a number of benefits.

I'd have more faith in an article in an accredited medical journal than a daily newspaper.

So many theories...I have heard the Yogis believed that cancer was caused when a cell was not able to breath in air. Cigarettes are said to contain 50 PROVEN carcinogens...

Another theory was that cancer was originally intended to act as weapon against harmful invaders of the body, then somehow, got out of control...

At the turn of the Century, people used to regularly consume the rind of fruits & vegetables, a practice that fell out of favour. There was a time when cancer was virtually unknown...

Some of you may have heard of The Doctrine of Signatures (the links author - views are his own, not sure I believe all that it contains) Shown to you primarily for the pictures and the relation between food and organs...http://www.richardcassaro.com/the-ancient-doctrine-of-signatures-suppressed-by-the-elite

Moderation in all things works for me. I try to "tip the scales" by including food that is healthy, and limit the amount of junk food.

Curious that the medical community has made advances in the treatment of cancer, but to date, have not been able to completely rid the world of the disease. The answer may lie in processed food, or in a jungle deep in Africa...

Then there is the MENTAL portion of the prevention of cancer...too long to get into here..

Be Well...bob

It is also known as cherimoya, guanabana, soursop, custard apple, and Brazilian paw paw. More about them here and what they look like.

I am not endorsing them, just passing along info.
