Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: JohnInKansas Date: 03 Jan 13 - 01:54 PM I'm not a fan of shows in which greed and vanity exploit ambition, vanity, and greed, but one (there may be a couple) Wiki Article asserts that a difference from other similar disasters is that the "judges" are also expected to "mentor" the "contestants." It might be assumed that "boot camp" is a corruption of the common term for a process in which the "mentor" tortures the "contestant" about "basics," but the article doesn't provide details. Never watched it, and based on the description probably won't; but it's obvious that this thread needs to be "more popular" to get any useful response, so I'll give it a kick. (low frontal kind?) Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: s&r Date: 03 Jan 13 - 02:05 PM Boot camp is residential and provides intensive training and testing in the performing skills needed and is terminated by the selection of the contestants for the live shows. Without prejudice E.&.O.E. Stu |
Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: Bobert Date: 03 Jan 13 - 02:06 PM I read what I could find on the internet, John, and like you couldn't really find much... I did leave a message on this girl's mother's Facebook and really didn't get an answer other than that her daughter is in L.A. trying to get her music career off the ground... BTW, the girl's name is Julia Bullock... Lot's of stuff in Google about her but unless I missed something I'm still clueless... B~ |
Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: Allan Conn Date: 03 Jan 13 - 04:05 PM Contestants which get through the initial televised auditions are taken to the next round (boot camp) where they are further whittled down to smaller numbers which then go on to the third round at the various judge's houses! If you've even seen American Idol then it is basically much the same as their Hollywood stage of the competition. |
Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: Bobert Date: 03 Jan 13 - 04:31 PM Okay... So how do you find out if someone has "made the cut"??? B~ |
Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: gnu Date: 03 Jan 13 - 04:38 PM Watch the show. Perhaps you could Google it and go to their site to see if there info you seek there? |
Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: Bobert Date: 03 Jan 13 - 05:08 PM Done the Googling but taking on another singing competition ain't in my future... I'd watch it if I knew that Julia was gonna be on it... B~ |
Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: Jeri Date: 03 Jan 13 - 05:35 PM The latest season of the show finished up a while back. She was on it earlier. I'm not sure when she got eliminated. |
Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: GUEST,pete from seven stars link Date: 03 Jan 13 - 05:44 PM assuming the USA format follows the UK version ,the quality of the singing is secondary to the image, and when the public voting starts many great singers go out early while the youngsters, whether very talented or mediocre and sometimes awful do well by getting the teenybopper votes.i cant complain though ,as i dont bother to vote! |
Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: Bobert Date: 03 Jan 13 - 05:54 PM Thanks, jeri... Guess I can leave it alone now... B~ |
Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: Allan Conn Date: 04 Jan 13 - 03:31 AM "while the youngsters, whether very talented or mediocre and sometimes awful do well by getting the teenybopper votes" I don't think that is necessarily true. For instance this year Ellie the 16 year old girl who was pretty good and tipped by most of the judges to win went out quite early in the show whilst the older guy Chris from Liverpool (who wasn't in her league) went through to the final 3. The other 2 in the final 3 probably deserved to be there but I am still bemused as to how Chris got that far. It certainly wouldn't on the back of teenybopper votes. Likewise the US version was won by an older country singer who was good but wouldn't have picked up the teenybopper vote. There are some differences between the US and UK shows. The US show had children in it whereas the UK has a minimum age of 16. There were some pretty good child singers in the US show but the results process was a bit too much for one of them in particular. The US show showed the voting stats every week whereas in the UK they don't do that until after the competition. The US show has slightly different categories and there is a lot less bitching between the judges so I think Cowell has many seen how that is starting to have a negative impact in the UK. There were no joke contestants in the US version. In the UK there always seems to be one contestant who obviously isn't that good or is a bit of a joke figure. ie think Rylan, Wagner, the Chinese lady, Jedward etc. |
Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: GUEST,pete from seven stars link Date: 04 Jan 13 - 02:22 PM fair enough allan.i was generalizing.jedward certainly did not get so far by singing talent IMO.i was impressed by the 16 yr old doing minnie rippertons hit.i thought chris was quite good but my favourite was melanie masson.she went out early as i suppose most rockers have?. |
Subject: RE: X-Factor ???... From: Allan Conn Date: 05 Jan 13 - 04:19 AM I quite agree Jedward were the joke act that year. They didn't really progress at the expense of older more talented acts which wouldn't attract younger voters though. The over 28s that year went out in week 6, week 9 and one made it to the final. Jedward were bottom in week 5 and were only saved by the judges in the sing off (with a young Welsh girl who was the same age as them) which caused a flood of viewer complaints. They went out in week 7. Prior to Jedward being bottom in week 5 the acts that went out were two young girl groups, another young girl the same age as Jedward, and a guy from Glasgow who was only 4 years older than Jedward. Rather than getting their votes from teenyboppers I think Jedward attracted at least a good portion of their votes from people who were simpply taking the piss. A kind of anti-vote. same with the other joke acts in other series especially Wagner in the following year. He was the oldest in the competition, was dreadful, and got further in the competition than Jedward did. |
