Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Jan 13 - 08:26 PM There are a few symbolic crossings and brilliant political marketing ploys yet to be achieved in that respect, and I think they would go in this probable order.... 1. Elect a female president. (Hillary would certainly be a strong possibility.) 2. Elect an openly gay man as president. (this will be delayed for quite a while yet...) 3. Elect a proudly lesbian married woman as president. (Why not? I'd probably vote for her...if I could vote in the USA.) (But that's option number 3...so not for awhile yet either.) 4. Elect a gay Jewish/Muslim handicapped transexual as president. (How effing progressive is THAT! I ask you... Who would dare run against him/her/whatever?) 5. Elect a cigar-smoking, wisecracking Chimpanzee as president. This final option is by FAR the most progressive of all, and probably the only one that can possibly finally and truly set matters right in "the greatest nation on Earth" (cough!). I'm totally for it. Given the fact, however, that it's option number 5 on the list, I'm afraid that Chongo won't likely get to be Commander-In-Chief until, say...maybe 2044...if he lives that long. (sigh) That's a long time. None of us here will be alive to see it. That saddens me. Ah well, you can't expect everything to get sorted out perfectly in your own lifetime, can you? ;-) ***** Yes, the above is a bit of political satire...I'm poking fun at contemporary electoral politics in the USA and the way USA candidates are marketed and elections won, but I'm not poking fun at anyone here. Nothing to get too worked up about. If it's not to your taste, just ignore it and move on to the next post. ***** Regarding Hillary again, though...I think she'd be a very formidable candidate, despite her advancing age, and despite the utter hatred the Republican base has for her. She's also a very familiar name and face, and that always helps. Given the great talent the Republicans have shown lately for shooting themselves in the foot, her time could be coming. |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Rapparee Date: 27 Jan 13 - 08:31 PM Maybe gun control could help the GOP, huh? I mean, with the foot-shooting and all. |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Jan 13 - 08:42 PM I guess it could if they had any interest in the concept... ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Jack the Sailor Date: 27 Jan 13 - 08:53 PM Hillary appeals to everyone, Democrats, moderates and people who hate President Obama. She could win Texas in the electoral college. |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 27 Jan 13 - 08:55 PM She would have to sideline Biden. Difficult. But I would like to see it happen. |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Jack the Sailor Date: 27 Jan 13 - 08:58 PM Biden would not have a snowball's chance against Hillary in the primaries. |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Rapparee Date: 27 Jan 13 - 09:01 PM Yeah, but who wants a dumb blonde as president? Might as well have a monkey or something, right? |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Bobert Date: 27 Jan 13 - 09:06 PM I disagree, JtS... I think that Biden would mop the floors with Hillary in the primaries... He schmoozes better... His wife is smart... He is a career politician and "everyman"... He's earned it... Plus he will be coming in as a sitting VP... Biden wins... Hillary's time has come and gone... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Jack the Sailor Date: 27 Jan 13 - 09:14 PM He shmoozes better than Hillary, yeah, But she is WAY WAY smarter. His wife is smart. But is she smarter than Bill? Does anyone schmooze better than her husband? Biden's problem is being Biden and everything that Biden has ever said. |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Bill D Date: 27 Jan 13 - 09:39 PM We'll know in a couple of years... Neither Biden or Hillary are spring chickens, and the Democrats will want someone who can last EIGHT years after 2016. I'd vote for either Joe or Hillary, but we MUST keep an eye on some of a dozen other competent Democrats! |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: catspaw49 Date: 27 Jan 13 - 09:39 PM Hillary has a far better shot than Biden. I like Biden but the Dems have their best chance, at least at this point, with Clinton. The one sure thing is that there is going to be a real need to stay on top of what the GOP is doing in terms of gerymandering the electoral vote and/or additional acts toward voter suppression. The GOP right now don't have a front runner as there are too many variables that will take place over the next year or two. I think Ryan will shoot himself in the coming budget fights and Rubio is a long ways from the persona that makes a presidential candidate. Most interesting watch is Chris Christie, riding a wave now but lots of potential disasters coming where he can fall badly........or equally get even hotter. If a another clown car primary is allowed to happen in the GOP, the Dems get it with no problem. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Arkie Date: 27 Jan 13 - 09:44 PM When Bill was governor of Arkansas, there were quite a few folk who thought Hillary would have been a better governor. Bill was a master at politics, however. I did not expect him to beat George the first. |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: pdq Date: 27 Jan 13 - 10:41 PM "I did not expect him to beat George the first." He didn't. Ross P. Rot beat George H. W. Bush. Clinton only got 43.01% of the popular vote. |

Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: GUEST,Musket sans cookie Date: 28 Jan 13 - 03:07 AM You know, it's when you see threads like this, with the word "these" in the title that you feel very relieved to correct it to "those" United States. The token of your President gives the rest of the world, especially the developed world, a glimmer of hope. However, the issue of Dumbfuckistan doesn't go away and our satirical news programmes on TV and radio need your tea party and rednecks so we can laugh and feel good about ourselves. You know what the irony is? These days 4oz of tea costs me more in Boston than in London. I have right of residency but luckily I don't have the right to vote. God bless America and keep banging the rocks together guys... |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: GUEST,999 Date: 28 Jan 13 - 04:05 AM There is an even more important election before 2016. House seats--all 435 of them--are on the block. If it's more of the same, it may not matter who wins in 2016. |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Bobert Date: 28 Jan 13 - 09:43 AM The House elections are completely bogus, brucie... The Republicans have rigged them beyond repair... The majority has been silenced... Here in North Carolina we have 13 seats in the House... In the last elections Democrats carried 51% of the votes cast in House elections to only 48% by Republicans (3% to others)... You'd think that with a 51-48 advantage in popular vote that the Dems wold have gotten 6 or 7 of the House seats, wouldn't you??? Guess how many the Dems got??? Only 4 out of 13.... Same exact thing happened north of us in Virginia... Might of fact, same exact thing is happening though out the South and Midwest... These elections are pre-decided... Dems took the popular vote across the country for the House but you see what that got them... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: GUEST,999 Date: 28 Jan 13 - 09:51 AM You saying it can't be corrected? |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Jan 13 - 10:07 AM It's kind of like asking "Who will be the next Emperor of these glorious Roman provinces and of our mighty Empire?" If one is living outside the boundaries of Rome itself, one rolls one's eyes and says, "Oh, God! Not another one!" An Empress would be a somewhat refreshing variation on the theme, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Jack the Sailor Date: 28 Jan 13 - 11:39 AM Sure it can be corrected,at the next census of 2020 if thye dems take back the state legislatures. But with the personhood of corporations is making that less and less likely. |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Wesley S Date: 28 Jan 13 - 11:56 AM Would Hillary's campaign song be "Stand By Your Man"? Seriously - Bill would be campaigning with Hillary and that would be a big plus. What we'll need to watch is what she does after she's no longer the Sect of State. And what kind of jobs the President gives to Joe in the next few years. That should show us who's being groomed. |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: Bill D Date: 28 Jan 13 - 12:23 PM Jack has it perfectly-- we are required to 'adjust' our voting districts after each census. This was ... reasonably... designed to reflect changing population and demographics, so that an **equitable** number of voters have a congressional representative. Now, those districts are redrawn in amazingly creative ways to design district maps that look like amoebas having orgasms. The Republicans take this to heights seldom seen, and THEY won the right to control the process in 2010. Now... if nothing is done, these districts will continue to elect Republicans because they are configured... like amoebas... to get the most possible Republican districts, even if the majority of statewide votes are for Democrats! The Democrats will continue to win overwhelmingly in their reduced number of districts....which will never give them a majority in certain states. How to break that system? Oh.. well... we can amend the constitution to change the rules to 'fair' one- and this requires a super-majority of STATES to approve the change. See where this is going? The other 'possibility' is that the Repubs will at some point get SO greedy that they offend & embarrass enough of their own members in enough states and tilt the redistricting back into saner configurations. (or that 'cultural demographics' (immigrants...etc) will overwhelm a few districts before they can be RE gerrymandered). Sound a bit like Catch-22 to anyone? |
Subject: RE: BS: 45th President of these United States. From: GUEST,sciencegeek Date: 28 Jan 13 - 12:30 PM gerrymandering assumes that the newly redrawn district is consistent with the registered voters... otherwise it would be a crap shoot. while the urban areas have the larger population & tendancy to vote a more liberal agenda, it does not follow that every rural resident is going to vote for the right. so... take that very effective organization of President Obama and use them to register everyone they can... and let everyone in the redrawn districts get a shot to vote... and present a balanced overview, though it seems hard when we have wingnut tea party members who are totally unbalanced. too optimistic??? I hope not. |
