Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: Pete Jennings Date: 30 Jul 13 - 07:25 AM Glass of stout a day helps: I had anaemia when I was a youngster in the sixties and the doc recommended a bottle of Mackeson a day! I kid you not... Good news, Dave, and no doubt the reduced daily travel is helping. |

Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 30 Jul 13 - 03:55 AM I think the measurement is what Bobad said - I am pretty sure they said it should be in the 130-170 range and I was half of what it should be. They seemed pretty sure it was iron deficiency as well. Thanks again. Dave |

Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: bobad Date: 29 Jul 13 - 08:50 PM Spaw, I thought of platelets at first but since he was being investigated for anemia I figured it must be his Hgb level. I believe that the UK has adopted the international standard for reporting units as we have in Canada for over 20 years now. In any case I'm happy to hear that Dave is on the mend. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: catspaw49 Date: 29 Jul 13 - 08:22 PM I think it's the Platelet count with 140 being the lowest in the acceptable range. GOODONYA!!!!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: Bat Goddess Date: 29 Jul 13 - 08:15 PM "Dave, Dick and Spaw" - sounds like a comedy duo with a pet puppy. Got a TV series yet? If it's not one thing, it's another... Best of wishes and good, healing thoughts for everybody, all the way around. (Me, too, I guess -- maybe I should make an appointment for a checkup. Too busy worrying about Tom's day to day health issues to worry about my own, I guess.) Linn |

Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: bobad Date: 29 Jul 13 - 05:16 PM "last test at the haematology department gave a count of 140 - Dunno what it is counting but it was 75 when I was ill and my red blood cells were very small" Most likely those values are for your haemoglobin level expressed in grams per liter, normal for males is 135 to 175. A level of 75 with small red cells, known as microcytes, is indicative of iron deficiency anemia. |

From: Dave the Gnome Date: 29 Jul 13 - 03:39 PM last test at the haematology department gave a count of 140 - Dunno what it is counting but it was 75 when I was ill and my red blood cells were very small. All back to normal now. White cell count good as well so, all in all, good results. Just need to get rid of this blood clot, which should be soon and, fingers crossed, a clean bill of health. I would like to thank everyone for their support and good wishes that I am sure helped me considerably. Cheers all Dave |

Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 03 May 13 - 12:18 PM Well, thought a quick update would be in order and it all seems good :-) I have had all the tests they want to run and nothing sinister came up. I am therefore, as from last week, on a course of iron tablets. After just a few days I must say I feel good. It's funny how you don't realise how bad things are until they get better but the first thing I noticed was reaching the top of the stairs without breathing heavily. My knees are not aching anything like before and I can walk for 30 minutes with no pain in my legs. As an added bonus I can come off the Heparin injections and go on Warfarin tablets. As I have already had anti-coagulants for 3 months I should only need to continue another 3. So, in a nutshell, things are definitely looking up:-) Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 Mar 13 - 05:10 PM Thanks Mike - Much appreciated. The Doc here at the new place seems very good at explaining and the hospital seems to do likewise. Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: MikeL2 Date: 12 Mar 13 - 12:19 PM Hi Dave Sorry to hear that your are still under the weather. If have any questions about your condition you should get the Doc to explain in words of one syllable. Also if you are not sure about your Doc's diagnoses or treatment you should ask. Get better soon Dave Best wishes MikeL2 |
Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 11 Mar 13 - 02:07 PM Thanks bobad - You would think so wouldn't you - But, as I said earlier, the more you dig the more you find and a low white blood cell count can be attributed to, amongst many other things, some viruses! Mind you, it can also be down to liver issues which I was probably adding to with excessive alcohol:-( I'll just watch out and get to the docs if I get any infections for now. The garden shed is ready. Pete, but I think the Mrs has in reserved for me! Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: Pete Jennings Date: 11 Mar 13 - 01:28 PM Grandson number one: have you got a garden shed? :-)) |
Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: bobad Date: 11 Mar 13 - 11:59 AM Not to belabour the point but infections would normally increase your white cell count but whatever it turns out to be I wish you all the best. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 11 Mar 13 - 11:48 AM I had a spate of infections over the New Year, bobad. I guess that wouldn't help! Pretty sure my immune system was in poor shaoe as I was knackered all the time. All being well it is all linked and one one thing starts to get better it all will. Well, that is what we need to hope for anyway :-) Trouble is, Granson number one is currently recuperating from Chicken Pox at our house and everyone seems to be suffering from the sneezes :-( Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: bobad Date: 11 Mar 13 - 11:23 AM That doesn't explain your low white cells though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 11 Mar 13 - 11:20 AM Surprising the things you find out when you start to dig... I have been having tea and coffee with my meals for ever. Guess what. It inhibits the absorbtion of iron. Doesn't reduce the amount of iron, but it prevents my body processing it properly. So my good iron-rich meal of liver and spinach is only a fraction as effective because I have a mug of strong black coffee after it! Couple that with the proton pump inhibitor I have been taking for years and I think I begin to see why my iron levels are so low. Wonder why the Doc hasn't gone down that route yet? Guess they need to make sure I am not loosing blood anwhere but in the interim a couple of minor adjustments here and there may help :-) Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: Wish me luck! Anaemia tests... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 07 Mar 13 - 05:16 PM Well, for those interested, here's the latest. Anyone following the 'Gnomish movements' thread will know that along with all of this we moved house! We are now well settled in the new place and I saw the doctor the first week we were there. She sent me for a blood test, which showed I was still anaemic and while my B12 and folic acid counts were fine my iron was very low. She is not prescribing a supplement yet though because... They want to do more tests! I am having a CT scan tomorrow and an endoscopy on April 2nd. After that, should nothing prove untoward, they will treat the anaemia as a simple deficiency rather than a loss of blood somewhere. She did mention that as well as having a low red cell count my white cells were slightly down too. So if I may be more prone to infections but she did say it was not serious. I reckon with a low red and white count I am just short of blood :-) I need to top it up with Guinness! Seriously though - I have cut drink by more than half and I definitely feel all the better for it. Along with the good sleeps I am getting with the CPAP machine I am generally feeling pretty good. The leg with the clot still aches occasionally but I can walk for a good half hour or more without too much discomfort. Something that I realised I have not been able to do for weeks! Just as well seeing as we are planning a good afternoons walk in a couple of weeks. I am still on heparin for the DVT rather than warfarin until they are sure I am not bleeding anywhere. I reckon the clot will be gone before they finish testing :-) Anyhow - I'll post again soon. Cheers DtG |
