Subject: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bobert Date: 17 Feb 13 - 08:13 PM I'm thinkin' about the story of the crossroads where the devil drives up and the blues guy is sittin' there at the crossroads awaiting him and the devil gets out of ____________ (your pick) and sits down behind the guy and plays the blues into the guy's geetar in exchange for the guy's soul, get's back in the ____________ and drive off... Me??? It a '49 Mercury... It's a black 4 door with the rear kinda draggin' low... Yours??? B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: pdq Date: 17 Feb 13 - 08:18 PM How about a '49 Cadillac? Or maybe a '49 "bullet nose" Studebaker? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bobert Date: 17 Feb 13 - 08:21 PM I like the Caddie... The Stude don't work for me... Not evil enough... A black '52 Stude Starliner, however, I could live with.... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: pdq Date: 17 Feb 13 - 08:49 PM Brain fart time. The 'bullet nose" Studebaker was 1950, not 1949. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 17 Feb 13 - 09:19 PM Come to think of it, damned near any American-built car from 1959, as long as it's black. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bobert Date: 17 Feb 13 - 09:32 PM Oh mah gawd, b-bad... When I was in high school my next door neighbor bought a brand new '59 Buick, covert, red and white with white top... My buddy, Jim Clark, was 16 and had a license so we cruised in that car a lot... Great cruiser... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: pdq Date: 17 Feb 13 - 09:34 PM In 1959, Duke Elington had a new Imperial with the rare "Continental spare" trunk option. Shiny black, of course. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bobert Date: 17 Feb 13 - 09:38 PM Yeah, a '59 Imperial... I like the heck out of it... Being a Hemmings Motor News junkie, I know just what that car would have looked like... Real groovy... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Pete Jennings Date: 18 Feb 13 - 06:54 AM Love the '59 Cadillac. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 18 Feb 13 - 07:23 AM Speaking of Chrysler Imperials, a friend of mine had a 1949 Imperial when we were in high school. Five of us rode to a Canned Heat concert in it, so there's a real blues connection. By the way, that car had a "semi-automatic" transmision. You had to push the clutch in for first gear, but not for second and third. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Pete Jennings Date: 18 Feb 13 - 07:28 AM The '49 Imperial looks like it should have a tommy gun sticking out the window... |

Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bobert Date: 18 Feb 13 - 08:59 AM Hey, Beeze... That's a limo Chrysler with the rear suicide doors... Very cool... I mighta mentioned that when I was a kid our next door neighbors bought President Truman's 1946 Lincoln limo... My mom and the neighbor would put all us kids in the back and roll up the window between the front seat and the back of the car... It had two fold down seats in addition to a big back seat... Very cool... Not exactly a blues cruiser... The Lincoln that is... That '28 McLaughlin is very cool, J-Mac... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: frogprince Date: 18 Feb 13 - 04:08 PM bobad, I do hate to break it to ya, but... that's a '60! I had a white LeSabre 4dr hardtop, bought in creampuff shape when I got out of the navy in Jan.'68. The '59 was the same body but with about i/8th as many wrinkles and bulges. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: frogprince Date: 18 Feb 13 - 04:19 PM As to the car that would fit in that crossroads scene, I would have a hard time deciding between the '59 Caddy and THIS. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bobert Date: 18 Feb 13 - 04:35 PM Is that a '55 Lincoln, f-prince, or '56??? B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: John MacKenzie Date: 18 Feb 13 - 04:47 PM I always liked the Impala convertible, with the 'eyebrows' at the back. Like this baby |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bill D Date: 18 Feb 13 - 05:10 PM My boss in the grocery store in 1960 had an Edsel. It gave HIM the blues. (He drove it from Kansas to New Mexico & back... took 3 engines to finish the trip. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: frogprince Date: 18 Feb 13 - 05:59 PM I don't know that there was any way to tell the diff between the '55 and '56. (Or was it '56 and '57...) Technically it was a Continental, not a Lincoln; for that brief moment in time Continental was a true separate division, & about all they shared with the Lincoln was the engine. Ford made just one or two proto convertibles; I think at least a couple of other MK II's have been reworked as convertibles since. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bobert Date: 18 Feb 13 - 08:13 PM Just got the latest issue of Hemmings Motor News so my head is filled with blues cruisers but the one that really stuck out for me was... ...'50 Ford business coupe... They call the '49-'51s "shoebox cars" and they are cool... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: catspaw49 Date: 18 Feb 13 - 09:04 PM RE: the '59 Caddy....... It was the ultimate pinnacle of design excess. All the things that had become more and more popular reached their peak with this car. Chrome, chrome "bullets," bullet taillights, sky-high fins.............name it and the '59 had it in the extreme. Along with PJ O'Rourke, I envision the first one rolling off the line into an encircling crowd of engineers and designers. There is a gasp.....and a hush then falls over the group. After perhaps 10 seconds a solitary, plaintive, voice, speaks for the whole group..........."My gawd, what have we done?" As far as Blues Cruisers? 49 Packard 53(?) From: Jack the Sailor Date: 19 Feb 13 - 12:01 AM If we are talking today, the Devil pulls up in a mother of pearl while Hummer (not one of the baby Hummers, a real one.) limo with thirteen blacked out windows on each side and a hot tub in the back. Either that or a Carnival Cruise liner with no electricity. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: catspaw49 Date: 19 Feb 13 - 08:11 AM Well yeah.....there is that. Plus a 900 foot Cruise Liner sitting at some desolate Missisippi crossroads would add something to the mystery element of the whole experience...................... Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bobert Date: 20 Feb 13 - 10:40 AM I remember that movie... That car don't look like either a blues cruiser or a devil;s car but it sho nuff was possessed... I mean, the devil might be red but blues cruisers ain't... Maybe an Earl Schibe $99 paint job - and car, any color - turn it into a blues cruiser... B;~) |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: frogprince Date: 20 Feb 13 - 11:34 AM If the question isn't "what would you like to have to cruise in", but "What would the devil be driving when he pulled up", I think the answer might just have to be: THIS . |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Becca72 Date: 20 Feb 13 - 11:36 AM So you're the authority on what color car the devil prefers? :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: frogprince Date: 20 Feb 13 - 12:34 PM Becca, facts is facts; it doesn't take any particular authority to know that whatever he drives, it's gonna be BLACK . |

Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 21 Feb 13 - 05:23 PM Robert Johnson would probably opt for a Terraplane and Chuck Berry would go for a Flight DeVille. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: frogprince Date: 21 Feb 13 - 10:08 PM Nah, Robert; those '36's were too small, and at once pretty and unpretentious, to be right for Ol' Nick. The guardian angel who came rolling up to save your soul would be the one driving the'36. Scratch would gotta be drivin' that '67 Continental jukebox monstrosity I linked to last, or maybe a caddy pimpmobile with just three diamond or spade shaped bits of rear window showing through the padded top. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: frogprince Date: 21 Feb 13 - 10:18 PM Actually, I just spotted one of his demon nephews borrowing his current ride |
Subject: RE: BS: The Ultimate Blues Cruiser (car)... From: Bobert Date: 21 Feb 13 - 11:10 PM That is one ugly devils car, f-prince, but I kinda like it... Robert Johnson, however, was partial to Terraplanes... Even wrote a song about them... "I gotta a bad disconnection..." B~ |
