My dad bought us a Dave Gardener album back in the day. I liked the story about the driver not used to an automatic transmission saying, "he passed me by so I thought he wanted to race, so I put it in R."

My parents had one of his vinyl records and I listened to it so much when I was a 'tween'that I still can quote parts of it. I pulled him up on You Tube and agree with Russ. He's still funny, but some of it falls flat. I do find, however, that listening to the older generation of comedians who had to make people laugh without resorting to large doses of profanity and vulgarity makes one appreciate the craft and skill that it took - timing, inflection, etc.

When I was a kid in WV, we memorized his stories the way a later cohort would memorize Monty Python skits.

My wife and I still quote him on occasion, "Hair, teeth, and eyeballs all over the road." "no I ain't et yet", "lift and eat fast lest it fall through the crust".....

We bought CD versions of the LPs a few years ago. A nostalgia binge.

It is true that you can't go home, but we still enjoyed most of them.
Some didn't wear well, some did.

While on a drive one day we played a few cuts for our daughter and her husband. There was absolute silence from the back seat. Guess you had to be there.

Although I was a kid in WV I wasn't stupid or naive or ignorant of the larger world I was living in. I didn't hear the racism then, and still don't hear it. Especially compared to some of the Warner Brothers cartoons that were still being aired.

Brother Dave......Went to college with 95% of my classmates from 244 Appalachian counties. I get out Redd Foxx. They get out Brother Dave and Jerry Clower. Yeah.....Brother Dave..........

So they put this big sign up and it said, "IT'S COMING." The next week the sign changed and it said, "IT'LL BE HERE." Another week passes and now it says, "IT'S ON THE WAY." The fourth week everybody was there waiting to see the sign and it said, "WATCH FOR IT." Week five rolls up and now the whole town, every blessed soul is there for the unveiling and the sign says, "IT'S GONE."

Brother Dave............

Yeah, I know... He's politically incorrect... He's a racist... He's this and he's that... And, yeah, to some extent he is everything that folks say he is but...

...having just found (and borrowed) 4 LPs that my late brother-in-law owned of this guy and having listened to two of them last night, the guy certainly had a lot of story tellin' talent, too...

I really haven't heard anything that I would consider racist yet although it could be argued that with his usage of Southern black dialect that he is making fun of black folks but...

...hey, we got white rappers using black dialect today and we don't go calling them racists... And being a blues man I have a lot of black dialect in me and I know I ain't no racist either...

Bottom line??? The guy had a real gift of making fun of just about everyone Southern, himself included...

(Note: Of course, I could listen to the two other LPs tonight and come back tomorrow with an entirely different view of the guy...)

B~
